The Everyday Jiu-Jitsu Podcast Ep 49: Refereeing For Beginners
In this episode, I discuss refereeing for beginners. Learning how to ref is a very good way to gain a better understanding of the game, as well as becoming a more effective coach and competitor. The role of the referee is incredibly important in Jiu-Jitsu competition, and should absolutely be done to the best of one’s ability. This position requires knowledge, humility, patience, stress management, and the ref’s undivided attention. The referee should never steal the show in a grappling match; a competition is about the expression of the two athletes competing against each other. However, one mistake on the part of the referee can completely change the outcome of a match. I discuss my reasons for being a referee, refereeing kid’s matches, fairness of outcome, tips, and tricks, and becoming the ref that every competitor wants calling their matches. Enjoy! The Everyday Jiu Jitsu Podcast Ep 48: Mentoring a Mentor
This week I talk about developing potential instructors and mentors in Jiu Jitsu. I love this topic because I believe one of my main goals as a BJJ coach is to develop not only competent Jiu-Jitsu players but effective mentors (who can also create effective mentors) as well. I discuss identifying these special individuals in the room, ways you can support them through their journey, helping them navigate through potential obstacles, imposter syndrome, and creating a fun gym culture that fosters growth. Excelling in any skill often requires the support and guidance of a great mentor, and our sport is no different. This is a special position that shouldn’t be taken lightly, and can really positively impact someone’s life.Contact/Support The Show:Website: ejjp.showInstagram: @theeverydayjiujitsupodcastTikTok: @ejjpodEmail: ejjpod@gmail.comOn Guard Online Academy: https://onguardbjj.com/p/online-academyZara Can Do Jiu Jitsu! https://books.friesenpress.com/store/title/119734000253392052/Matt-Kwan-Zara-Can-Do-Jiu-Jitsu%21The Everyday Jiu Jitsu Podcast Store: https://my-store-ee3230.creator-spring.com/Make a donation to my PayPal account: matt@onguardbjj.com

The Everyday Jiu Jitsu Podcast Ep 47: Donkey: The New Guard
This week is all about the Donkey Guard! This position has recently gained popularity in the current BJJ landscape, but it has actually been around for many years. One thing I absolutely hate in Jiu Jitsu is when my opponent knows more than me, especially in a position or a system that I have completely failed to address! Therefore, it was absolutely critical that I learned the power of this underappreciated position. The Donkey Guard is simple to use and very effective. You can use it to sweep and submit your opponent under many rule sets. It is also an asymmetrical position in that you have the ability to attack your opponent and they do not have the ability to attack you. Furthermore, I was shocked at how seamlessly the Donkey Guard fit into my pre-existing game. I hope in a short amount of time, you can smash your training partners and opponents with the reverse cow girl… I mean, reverse closed (donkey) guard.Further Study/Resources:-Reverse Cowgirl… I Mean Closed Guard by Owen Jones-The Donkey Guard by Jeff Glover-Matt Kwan vs Daniel Sathler 2023 IBJJF Portland Open (Heelhook from Donkey Guard): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJQ0iENvDFIMatt Kwan vs Daniel Sathler IBJJF Portland Open 2023Black Belt Adult Middleweight Divisionwww.youtube.com-Donkey Guard Escape!!
