#93 Super Bowl Champion and All-Pro Lineman Matt Birk and the Case for Late Specialization in Sports
He didn't specialize early. In fact, he didn't play until high school and scouts were not lining up to sign him for college football, and yet Matt Birk forged a great career and became one of the best Lineman in the NFL? Do you really need to focus on one sport early in your childhood? Matt Birk is proof you don't. In this episode, Matt also discusses our infatuation with early talent, the lack of values in sports, and how parents should let kids get out of the game what they want to get out of it. This is a fantastic conversation that proves the important factors of in youth sports are no different than those at the highest levels. From a Super Bowl Champion, to the sandlot player, youth sports is about values, fun, and finding that Rule of One Moment. Getting in Touch: Website: www.4HG.com Join us at the Future of Coaching Conference! Future of Coaching Conference Registration Page About Matthew Robert Birk (born July 23, 1976) is a former American football center. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft, and later played for the Baltimore Ravens. He played college football at Harvard. Birk is a two-time All-Pro, six-time Pro Bowl selection, and one-time Super Bowl champion. Birk established the HIKE Foundation in 2002, which seeks to "impact the lives of at-risk children by providing interactive programs and resources needed to guide a child through the key educational transitions between elementary, middle, high school and college."The foundation launched "Ready, Set, Read!" in select Baltimore area public schools in the fall of 2010. The program works with about 100,000 Baltimore students on improving their reading skills through an incentive-based system. Birk received the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2011 for his commitment to improving literacy among at-risk youth. He was named the sixth-smartest athlete by the Sporting News in 2010. Birk is a pro-life activist. His wife volunteers at a crisis pregnancy center and he participated in the Maryland March for Life in 2011.[12] He is also a Roman Catholic and father of six. In October 2012, Birk publicly spoke out against gay marriage before a Maryland ballot referendum on the Civil Marriage Protection Act which eventually passed.[14] He also penned an op-ed, published in the Star Tribune on October 2, 2012, calling for passage of the Minnesota Marriage Amendment that would amend that state's constitution to prohibit gay marriage; it was defeated in the fall election and gay marriage was legalized in Minnesota in 2013. Birk announced in February 2013 his intentions to eventually donate his brain to Boston University's School of Medicine for research into concussions. After the Ravens won the Super Bowl, Birk chose not to attend the celebratory meeting with President Barack Obama, saying "I wasn't there. I would say this, I would say that I have great respect for the office of the presidency, but about five or six weeks ago, our president made a comment in a speech and he said, 'God bless Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood performs about 330,000 abortions a year. I am Catholic, I am active in the pro-life movement and I just felt like I couldn't deal with that. I couldn't endorse that in any way." #91 A Conversation with World Cup and Olympic Sports Psychologist Bill Beswick
It is important the people coaching our children have all the qualities and skills necessary to develop success beyond the game. Who "coaches" our children's coaches? This week, we continue with this theme of coach development to discuss how vital it is to have someone "coaching the coaches". Bill Beswick is widely considered one of the best coach trainers in the world and he joins us to share his philosophies and methods. Bill is recognised as a leader in the field of applied sports psychology and especially renowned for his work with professional elite soccer teams. With an academic background to Masters degree level and experience as Head Coach to England Men's Basketball Team (Commonwealth Games Gold Medal Winners), Bill was ideally placed to become the first sports psychologist operating fully in English professional soccer. In soccer, Bill has worked at Derby County, Manchester United, Middlesbrough & Sunderland in the English Premier League and contributes to UEFA Pro Licence award courses for a number of European Football Associations. He has international experience with the England U18 and U21 squads and as Team Psychologist with England Senior Men. Currently Bill is consultant Club Psychologist to FC Twente in the Dutch Eredivisie. He also provides mentoring and support to senior rugby union coaches, including supporting England Women's Rugby coaching team through their 2010 World Cup campaign and is unique in having England international experience across three major team sports: basketball, soccer and rugby. His book 'Focused For Soccer' (now in a new, enlarged 2nd edition) published by Human Kinetics was one of the first to explore the psychology of soccer and has proved to be a sustained success, with translations into Japanese, Chinese, Spanish and German. Bill's own sportsmind resources available through this website provide coaches and players with unique development materials presented in accessible, up to date digital formats and based on more than thirty years of coaching and teaching experience. He presents workshops across Europe and the USA and enjoys working 'on attachment' with the Athletics Departments of several US universities and with MLS team FC Dallas. Through his company, Sportsmind, Bill offers consultancy services on a wide range of performance and leadership related issues in sport and business. Companies and individual senior managers can benefit from the same executive coaching and mentoring relationship that Bill offers to top coaches and players. As well as working with elite teams and coaches across many different sports, Bill's career has included coaching under 8 mini rugby, school team sports, men's and women's student and representative basketball teams - the importance of participation, enjoyment and involvement in sport at whatever level has always been part of his life. Ask Bill what his most fulfilling role is and he'll reply "Coaching coaches." It is as a coach educator and mentor that his experience and insights prove the most valuable. #90 How a Coaching Mentor Can Change Your Life with Alan Keane, England u18 Basketball Head Coach
We often talk on this podcast about theory and research, but this week we are talking about application. We have mentioned many times about the importance of getting a coaching mentor or at least a group of coaches to bounce ideas off of, get advice from, and help us raise our game. What does that feel like? Is it hard? What are the obstacles? What happens when you don't agree? What will your staff say when an outsider steps in? This week, we talk about all of that, and more, with Alan Keane (@CoachKeane14), Great Britain and England U18 Head Men's Basketball Coach. Alan has been involved with professional and international basketball for the past ten years, as both the England U16 and U18 Head Coach for the European Championships, as well as assistant coach for the Reading Rockets Senior team. A few years back, Alan had the privilege of being assigned multiple time Way of Champions guest Mark Bennett (@PDSCoach) as a coaching mentor for a year. The journey was an incredible one for Alan, as he worked with Mark in both a basketball and a school setting, identifying the non-negotiables, implementing the Rule of 3, and helping him prepare a team for the European championships, including turning over an entire national team practice to Mark, who does not even coach basketball! It is an incredible story and one that will inspire you to find a way to get a mentor and practice your own coaching! #88 How to start a coaching mentorship group in your community with Ryan Krzykowski, Founder of Community for Coaches

From 1998-2005, Ryan coached football and taught math at Naples High School, and experienced sport used as ministry to change the trajectory of people's lives. Players, coaches, parents, and really an entire campus and community were changed forever by the work of the Spirit of God. Ryan began to develop a real vision and sense of possibility as he and his fellow coaches built a program that was designed to change lives for eternity. In the summer of 2008 the Krzykowski family arrived in the KC Area, and Ryan began serving with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as Metro KC FCA's first Coaches Ministry Director. For 3 ½ years, Ryan developed a network of coaches throughout the Metro Area; serving, encouraging, and supporting them, and connecting them with each other in life changing ways. In January, 2012, Ryan decided to take a step of faith and establish Community for Coaches, under the leadership of the The Navigators. The Navigators ministry has existed since 1933, with a focus on small group and individual discipleship training. This focus on small groups and personal relationships was a perfect fit with Ryan's heart, gifting, and call from God.
