139: America’s only Historically Black and Catholic University - with Dr. Reynold Verret, President, Xavier University of Louisiana

This is The EdUp Experience President Series Episode #45.  In this episode of The EdUp Experience, we welcome Dr. Reynold Verret, President, Xavier University of Louisiana.  Xavier University of Louisiana is America’s only Historically Black and Catholic University and it graduates more African American students from medical school each year than any other university in the United States.  Reynold talks to us about STEM programs in the black community and what XULA is doing to better serve the black community in a world that is now hungry for equality. Dr. Reynold Verret is the sixth president and second lay leader of Xavier University of Louisiana. Of the 107 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and 262 Catholic colleges and universities in the United States, Xavier is the only Catholic HBCU in the nation.  Prior to acceding to the presidency of Xavier, Dr. Verret has served as provost at Savannah State University and at Wilkes University. As chief academic officer at Savannah, he led the university initiatives to build enrollment, enhance the quality and diversity of academic programs, develop the faculty, promote interdisciplinary efforts especially between the humanities and sciences, and to create cooperative relationships with neighboring institutions and with other partners at the K-12 and higher education levels. Marybeth Gasman, Ph.D., is Samuel DeWitt Proctor Endowed Chair in Education & a Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University. She also serves as the Executive Director of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Institute for Leadership, Equity, & Justice as well as the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions. Prior to joining the faculty at Rutgers University, she held the Judy & Howard Berkowitz Professor of Education at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education and as the Director of the Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions. She is one of the leading authorities in the country on historically black colleges (HBCUs). Gasman is an historian of higher education and served as the vice president of the history and historiography section of the American Educational Research Association from 2011–2014, and as the chair of the American Association of University Professor's Committee on HBCUs. 137: Rankings, Testing, & Debt - The Changing Admissions Landscape - with Robert Franek, Editor-in-Chief, The Princeton Review

In this amazing episode of The EdUp Experience, our first release in 2021, we have the honor of speaking with Robert Franek, Editor-in-Chief, The Princeton Review.  Admissions has changed as a result of the pandemic, and it will continue to change post-pandemic.  The SAT/ACT tests are required by some schools, but now we have test-optional, test-blind, and for some, no testing at all.  What is this doing to the future college search for "traditional" students?  Rob also talks to us about his perception of the value of a college degree, and he keeps it 100 when he recognized that some administrator who devalue college rankings, will also happily use them as a marketing tool.   The Princeton Review surveys thousands of students and debt continues to be the main stressor - this episode has it all and Rob is amazing. Rob Franek, Editor-in-Chief at The Princeton Review, is a nationally sourced expert on colleges and higher education. Over his 26-year career, he has been a college admissions administrator, publisher, editor, author, and lecturer. In his tenure with The Princeton Review, he has visited hundreds of high schools, colleges, and universities. He says the interactions he has with students, parents, educators, and administrators are among his most rewarding professional experiences. 135: Developing the 80-year Student Revenue Stream - with Dr. Stephen Spinelli, President, Babson College

This is The EdUp Experience President Series Episode #44.  In this episode of The EdUp Experience, we welcome Dr. Stephen Spinelli, President, Babson College.  In this episode, Stephen says that every single student becomes a business major when they graduate.   The "mind-blowing" amazing education being delivered right now is one of the positive consequences of CV-19, which includes colleges and universities opening themselves up to being more flexible in response to the individual and the way they want to learn.  At Babson college, their dynamic curriculum response to the current times, and Steven discusses creating an 80-year revenue stream rather than just a 4-year revenue stream.   Dr, Spinelli co-founded the Jiffy Lube car service company and previously spent more than a decade as a Babson professor and administrator. He also received a master's degree from Babson, a business school that enrolls about 3,300 students. Dr. Spinelli spent 10 years as president of Philadelphia University and oversaw its merger with Thomas Jefferson University. Prior to the Institute of the Future, Parminder was named Founding Executive Director of ACT Foundation in 2012. She oversaw the organization’s unique role as an operating foundation, strategic investor, and incubation partner in support of the New Learning Economy and Rise of Working Learners (published). Dr. Jassal previously served as a program officer supporting postsecondary success for low-income young adults at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. At Gates Foundation she helped design and scale a college-operating model titled “Pathways to Credentials and Careers” and led the “Learn and Earn” movement among employers and education providers. 133: Character Education Matters - with Dr. Carlos Campo, President, Ashland University

Carlos talks about the impact of mental health issues and how they've created a crisis point for students which has prompted Ashland to add a myriad of student support services.  Ashland believes in "character education" where the accent is on the individual.  Ashland has the largest correctional education program in the country - and it did not stop during CV-19 due to the investments in technology.  It's also helped them maintain growth during uncertain times.
