You can learn more about Dr. Emily King's new online course, Parenting On Your Own Path here: https://www.parentingonyourownpath.com/courses WE WROTE A BOOK, GUYS! : Penn, Kim, Lola, and Penn Charles Holderness create original music, parodies, and Vlogs for YouTube and Facebook to poke fun of themselves and celebrate the absurdity in circumstances most families face in their day to day life. They published "Christmas Jammies" in December 2013 and life hasn't been the same. Since then, their popular parodies, "All About That Baste", "Baby Got Class," and original music "Snow Day" have received national news coverage. Penn, the Dad, took a chance and left his job as a news anchor to join his wife Kim, the Mom, at their video production and digital marketing company, Greenroom Communications, LLC. Lola and Penn Charles are always happy, respectful and eat all of their vegetables (that last sentence is a lie). Working on Being A Better Ally
On this episode, we sit down with Donald Thompson and Jackie Ferguson of The Diversity Movement to have a conversation about race and how to be better allies in the wake of George Floyd. Donald Thompson is a friend and CEO of WalkWest. He serves on boards for several organizations in the fields of technology, marketing, sports and entertainment and is a mentor for Black Founders Google for Entrepreneurs Exchange. Jackie Ferguson is Director, Multicultural Programming at WalkWest and lead course writer for Diversity: Beyond the Checkbox. You can learn more at https://thediversitymovement.com/. The Diversity Movement has put together lots of resources, books for children, our offers and upcoming events that promote allyship and make us all stronger together. You can also purchase their module on Unconscious Bias for only $19 with 100% of the proceeds will go to North Carolina organizations that support, educate and empower underserved and marginalized communities in our fight for equality. Learn more: https://thediversitymovement.com/what-can-i-do/ Here are some of the ways I discussed how I am starting to become a better ally on the podcast as well: 1) Broaden your social media feed to more creators of color. Some Instagram users that I follow are @rachel.cargle, @theconsciouskid, @AustinChanning, and @LatashaMorrison. 2) Google whether your local police department outfits all on-duty officers with body worn cameras and requires them to be turned on when answering a call. If they don’t, write to your city government and advocate for it. 3) Read, learn, and get involved. You can get involved with Be The Bridge, Showing Up for Racial Justice, or Center for Racial Justice. I'm reading White Fragility and I'm Still Here about racial inequality. There are also good books for kids to begin the conversation: https://bookriot.com/2018/09/19/childrens-books-about-diversity/amp/ -- WE WROTE A BOOK, GUYS! The Dark Side of Social Media
Disclaimer: While this is the most important podcast we’ve ever done, it is about preventing the sexual predation of minors online. We recommend listening first before deciding what you want to share with your kids. Penn and I talk to my friend Roo Powell about her experience as a 37-year-old posing as an 11-year-old girl on social media. Her work has been featured on GMA and Nightline. She is truly a superhero. If you have children who use social media, please listen and make sure they are safe. You can get more information on our blog/channels: www.theholdernessfamily.com WE WROTE A BOOK, GUYS!
