Billy B is one of the most powerful super folk around, leader of a team of similarly endowed characters headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina and handled by Uncle Sam. Still, though, things seem to go according to Federal plan until a dozen Roman gods come back to Earth to pick up where they left off a couple of thousand years ago. TIMOTHY JAY SMITH - FIRE ON THE ISLAND

The arsonist has struck eleven times in as many months, each fire coming closer to tiny Vourvoulos, and each followed by a mysterious poison pen letter. The last one makes it clear: the arsonist plans to strike within days. With no clues, Nick searches for a motive that would drive someone to such a destructive act. He discovers a village embroiled in conflicts, some dating back generations, and uncovers earlier crimes—all casting a wide net of suspicion.Gradually the mystery is revealed through the interwoven stories of a struggling restaurant owner and her feminist teenage daughter, a seductive widow and lovelorn waiter, a scurrilous priest and patrician mayor, and a host of colorful characters who paint a portrait—both humorous and soulful—of Greece where the past mingles with the present. While sorting it out, Nick’s life is threatened, and he falls in love with a young waiter who becomes his chief suspect.Miscalculating the plan of attack, ultimately Nick has only minutes to stop the arsonist. He races for the fuel tank and toward an unexpected conclusion.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

MARK RUSSELL - CHECKMATE

The officially unsolved murder of Julia Wallace in Liverpool on 20th January 1931 is one of the classic cases of British true crime. The day before the murder a telephone message was left at the Liverpool Central Chess Club for William Wallace (who was a member). It involved an appointment with a possible business client for Wallace (who was an insurance collector) and instructed him to call at the address 25 Menlove Gardens East the following evening at 7.30 pm. The message was conveyed to Wallace who arrived at the club about 25 minutes later. The following evening Wallace took three trams (streetcars) to the Menlove Gardens area to find that there was a Menlove Gardens North, South and West but no East. He returned home to find his 69-year-old wife Julia brutally murdered in the front parlour of their home in Wolverton Street.  ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mark Russell is a local historian and researcher. Since viewing the Yorkshire TV docu-drama Who Killed Julia Wallace? in 1975 he has had a great interest in the case. His interests include music, films, history and true crime. He lives in Liverpool. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
