Introducing Project 2:59!
Over the next nine weeks, I will be documenting my preparation and lead-up to the 2023 Columbus Marathon that will take place on October 15.
This will be my first attempt at the marathon distance, and I have set the ambitious goal of running 2:59 or faster to break the three-hour barrier and qualify for a future edition of The Boston Marathon.
Coaching me will be Alex Ostberg, a seven-time All-American who holds PRs of 3:58 in the Mile, 7:49 in the 3k, and 13:18 in the 5k. He has a Bachelor's Degree in human biology, a minor in psychology, and a master's in public health.
I will take you behind the scenes on my training, mindset, and more each week via podcast with Alex. We will dive into the ins and outs of marathon training, seeking to provide you value along the way.

Running Towards Greatness: 4:01 HS Miler Clay Shively Shares His Story | An Inside Look At The Next Great Star
Today on the podcast is the one and only, Clay Shively!
Clay runs for his high school Wichita Trinity Academy and ran 4:01.47 in mile at this year's Festival of Miles as a junior in high school. This indoor season Clay broke the legendary Jim Ryun's 58yr old indoor state mile record of 4:07 by running 4:04.95. Clay is committed to run for Northern Arizona University next Fall.
I had the privilege of meeting Clay both in St. Louis and then a few weeks later in Seattle, and this kid not only had an incredibly bright future on the track, but is also one of the most genuinely kind people I've ever met.
In today's episode, Clay shares his upbringing in the sport, the past year of success, his ambitions for the next year, leading the class of 24', deciding to go to NAU, and much more. This kicks off episodes with the next class of stars in our sport, and I'm honored Clay kicked this off. Tune in to hear him speak before he sets the grass on fire this fall.

The Story Of Isaiah Harris: From Tough Beginnings To The World Championships
Today on the podcast is Isiah Harris!
Isaiah runs for the Brooks Beast. Isaiah most recently placed second at this year's US Championships by running a time of 1:46.68, sending him to Budapest this month for the 2023 World Championships. Back in 2022, he earned a spot on his first US team by finishing 2nd at the 2022 USATF Indoor National Championships, eventually finishing seventh at the World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.
In college, Isaiah achieved several notable milestones during his collegiate career at Penn State University, including winning the 2018 NCAA Championship in the Outdoor 800-meters with a time of 1:44.76. Isaiah is an 8-time Big Ten Champion and holds the All-Time Big Ten Indoor Championships and Outdoor Championships Records in the 800-meters with times of 1:46.24 and 1:45.31, respectively. He also competed in the 2017 IAAF World Championships and the USATF Championships, earning a silver medal in the latter with a time of 1:44.53. He demonstrated consistent performances and secured multiple NCAA Indoor/Outdoor All-American honors throughout his career. With impressive speed and endurance, Isaiah established himself as one of the top middle-distance runners in the United States and made significant contributions to Penn State's track and field program.

Run For Something More Than Yourself: 3:57 Miler Austen Dalquist Shares His Journey
Today on the podcast is one of the kindest souls alive, Austen Dalquist!
Austen is a professional runner for Roots Running based in Boulder, Colorado. He holds PRs of 1:51.22 (800m), 3:37.52 (1500m), 3:57.18 (Mile), and 13:50.87 (5k).
As a senior, he achieved the prestigious title of First Team All-American in the DMR (Distance Medley Relay) category. During his college years, Austen competed in various indoor and outdoor meets, consistently delivering strong performances. He set personal best times in events like the 5,000-meters and 10,000-meters, earning him placements at championship events like the SEC Outdoor Championships and NCAA West Regional. Austen's dedication and skills were evident throughout his college career, where he contributed valuable points to his team and consistently improved his performance. Prior to college, Austen demonstrated exceptional talent in high school, excelling in cross country and track events, holding multiple school records.
In this episode, Austen goes through his story, including being too invested in running, having an eating-disorder, and thriving as a professional. We also go through mindsets around the sport, and how that's changed overtime for Austen, as well as "The Tour" and much more. Today's conversation was very meaningful to me; Austen is so full of wisdom and perspective. I hope you will all learn from him as much as I did!

Rhythms of Success: US Champion Nia Akins' Harmonious Pursuits Of Track & Music
Today on the podcast is your 2023 Women's 800m Champion, Nia Akins!
Nia is an outstanding track and field athlete with an impressive list of accomplishments. Before she became a professional runner, she was the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships National Runner-Up and the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships National Runner-Up in the 800m. She was recognized as one of the top contenders for the Bowerman Award and was a finalist for the USTFCCCA National Women's Track Athlete of the Year. Nia has excelled in various events, earning All-America honors and capturing multiple titles at the Ivy League Indoor and Outdoor Heptagonal Championships. She holds several records at Penn, including the second-fastest time in NCAA history for indoor 800m (2:00.71) and first-all-time records in various relay events and outdoor races. In cross country, Nia has displayed her talent and earned accolades, such as USTFCCCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors and All-Ivy accolades.
Nia also has ventured into the music space over the past few years and developed a great passion for it. We explore that passion in today's episode as well as her recent success, start in the sport, finding balance, coffee, her dreams and ambitions, and much more! Winning The US Championships While Working Two Side Jobs: An Inside Look At The Incredible Story Of Freddie Crittenden
Today on the podcast is a US Champ, Freddie Crittenden!This is one of my all-time favorite episodes of the podcast. Freddie's story is nothing short of inspiring, and boy, am I fired up after listening to it. For those that aren't familiar, Freddie is a talented track and field athlete known for his exceptional hurdling skills. Throughout his career, he has participated in various prestigious events and achieved notable successes. At the 2019 IAAF World Relays, he earned a gold medal in the shuttle hurdles relay. Additionally, he secured a silver medal in the 110m hurdles at the 2019 Pan American Games. His achievements extend to international events, including a gold medal at the 2016 NACAC U23 Championships, gold at the 2022 NACAC Champions, and a bronze at the 2019 Nanjing World Challenge. Recently, he won the 2023 US Track and Field Indoor Championships in the 60mH. Most recently, Freddie placed third at the 2023 US Championships in Eugene earlier this month in the 100mH sending him to the World Championships held in Budapest next month. In this conversation, Freddie goes through working two jobs in addition to track, having his boss be his wife, almost quitting track, his start in the sport, his future ambitions in the sport, his journey with media, and much more! The King Of Comebacks: How Setbacks Have Propelled Sean McGorty Forward + Exclusive Stories From His Historic 2023 Season
Today on the podcast is a man who has been on fire recently, Sean McGorty!
Sean is an OG guest of The Running Effect, so it is always a joy to bring him back on and soak up his wisdom. Recently, Sean placed third in both the 5k & 10k at this year's US Championships. He will rep the red, white, and blue on the big stage next month in Budapest for the 2023 World Championships. In his most recent race, he ran a PR of 13:02.13 in the 5k to gain the World and Olympic standard. Sean runs for Nike and The Bowerman Track Club.
For those who aren't familiar with Sean, he has a long history of success from the time he was in high school. In high school, he won more state-championships and had more accolades than one could remember. In college, Sean became an NCAA Champion in the 5k at Stanford University and pushed forward that program to a new level in his years of representing the farm.
In today's conversation, Sean pulls back the curtain on his past ten months of ups and downs. He shares exclusive stories, insights, and wisdom from his journey and all of the different things that have gone on since our last conversation. He discusses his injury from this past winter and how he managed to come back and make the World Championships by placing 3rd in both the 5k and 10k. He goes through this in a deep way that I found fascinating and drew a lot of inspiration from. Today's conversation is one of the best and most inspiring in the history of the podcast. Period.

Duke's Coach Angela Reckart On Building Successful Programs & Coaching Successful Athletes
Today on the podcast is Coach Angela Reckart!
Coach Angela Reckart, the head coach of men's and women's cross country and assistant coach of track & field (distance) at Duke University, has quickly made an impact on the program. In her first season, Reckart led the Blue Devils to remarkable success as both the men's and women's distance units shattered program records, achieved 19 top-five program marks, and saw three individuals qualify for the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. The team's achievements were highlighted by standout performances from athletes like Emily Cole, CJ Ambrosio, Nick Dahl, and Michaela Reinhart. Under Reckart's guidance, the program has witnessed significant growth and promising results, cementing her reputation as an accomplished and influential coach. Her previous coaching experience at Penn State and North Carolina also demonstrated her ability to develop All-Americans and foster record-breaking performances.
Today's conversation was super fascinating. I've been loving these discussions with NCAA coaches, and Coach Reck brought the heat to today's conversation!
