Only Three Lads: '80s Post-Punk Band Afterimage - Top 5 Perfect Album Sides
We recently covered the topic of "all killer, no filler" albums, but what about the perfect single side of a record? If the physical time and space limitations of a vinyl LP or a cassette must exist, why not do something compelling?
Is it all poppycock...or cockypop?!? You make the call!
Our Third Lad for this exploration is frontman/saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist Dan Voznick, aka Alec Tension from underground '80s post-punk band Afterimage. Referred to in the Los Angeles Times as "LA's Joy Division" back in the day, Afterimage created a sound that was hypnotic, skittery and chilly, but is also adventurous, playful and complex. The original lineup of the band (Alec Tension, A Produce, Rich Evac and Holland DeNuzzio) only stayed together for a couple of years and released a scant discography of one single ("Strange Confession"/"The Long Walk") and an EP (Fade In), both in 1981. Those original recordings, plus a generous helping of unreleased demos and live tracks, are now available from Independent Project Records on the new retrospective compilation Faces to Hide.
Out now on double LP (available in both black and opaque white), special edition CD and digital formats, Faces to Hide proves as scathing, urgent, taut, angular and gripping as Afterimage’s scarce but unforgettable output must have sounded more than forty years ago. Packaged with extensive, career-spanning liner notes by noted journalist Richie Unterberger and previously unseen band photos, Faces to Hide also features Independent Project Records’ signature hand letterpress-printed custom design for the vinyl and CD packaging.
Thanks to Josh Mills from It's Alive Media for the introduction and coordination!

Play That Rock n' Roll: WARREN ZEVON inducted to the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME | Reactions from George Gruel, Anita Gevinson, & CM Kushins
This is Play That Rock n' Roll's special FULL TEAM COVERAGE of the announcement stating that WARREN ZEVON is a 2025 inductee for the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME!
This roundtable discussion features Chad Kushins (author of NOTHING'S BAD LUCK: The Lives of Warren Zevon), former radio host Anita Gevinson (who wrote about her relationship with Warren in her book, YOU TURN ME ON, I'M A RADIO), and photographer George Gruel (who wrote about his time as Warren's best friend and road manager in his book LAWYERS, GUNS, & PHOTOS).
In this episode, we celebrate the news of Warren being inducted and discuss WHY he is deserving of this honor. Chad gives some backstory about why it took so long for Warren to be inducted, while Anita and George tell some hysterical stories about him. Anita also shares her memories of singer/songwriter (and Warren's friend) Jill Sobule, who tragically passed away recently. Finally, we built an "entry point" playlist of Warren Zevon songs for those who are new to his catalog or perhaps are only familiar with "Werewolves of London".

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Metallica Live Night 2 in Nashville - Owners Suite!
The Wolf & Action Jackson are so happy to be able to share the story of Night 2 of Metallica in Nashville on Saturday, May 3. While the first night of the No Repeat Weekend was great, including the opening acts Suicidal Tendencies and Pantera, Saturday, May 3, 2025 was a special night in the boys lives as friends, fans and concert goers. Though their seats were solid on Thursday Night, the setlist wasn't white hot and the surroundings went downhill as the night progressed. However, through working some connections the boys were upgraded to a suite on Saturday night. And not just any suite, the Owners Suite - a double box on the 50 yard line, fully catered with an open bar, and easy chair seats that sat just back from the open windows.
That experience alone would make it a special night. But the fact that there was a lightning strike within 8 miles of the stadium which necessitated clearing everyone out of their seats and off the field while delaying Metallica's set by more than 30 minutes, it made for a stress free night with great people. We shared stories with folks we'd just met, learned about the new rooftop stadium being built next door, got an early gander at the setlist and enjoyed Metallica themed cocktails until the boys came on around 9:30.
Hear all about the odd and bloody openers Ice Nine Kills and how amped Fred Durst got the crowd during Limp Bizkit's set. The boys compare the setlists and favor Saturday's over Thursday's easily and, as a courtesy to Metallica, discuss how they would improve the setlist. Listen up for on stage banter from James Hetfield on a truly special night for 2 old metalheads.

I'm In Love With That Song Podcast - Brown Acid
In this episode, we take a fascinating journey into the world of obscure Psych and Hard Rock from the 1970's with the "Brown Acid" series. Brown Acid is not just a collection of music; it represents a moment in time, a period that falls between the peace and love of the hippie era and the aggressive sounds of punk rock-- a vital documentation of a lost chapter in American music history. In this episode, you'll be treated to a selection of tracks from the series, showcasing the eclectic and often wild sounds that characterize the Brown Acid compilations.
This unique series has been a labor of love for its creators, Daniel Hall and Lance Barresi, who have dedicated over ten years to unearthing rare tracks from the late '60's & '70's that have long faded into obscurity. As the 20th volume of the Brown Acid series has just been released, we take this occasion to explore the entire series and highlight some of Lance & Daniel's favorite tracks.
Here's a list of the Brown Acid tracks played during this episode:
Zeke - "Box" (Intro track) (Brown Acid Volume 1)
Josefus - "Hard Luck" (Vol 1)
Glass Sun - "Silence Of The Morning" (Vol 2)
Factory - "Time Machine" (Vol 3)
Summit - "The Darkness" (Vol 7)
Attack - "School Daze" (Vol 8)
Stonewall - "Outer Spaced" (Vol 9)
Gary Del Vecchio - "Buzzin'" (Vol 13)
Raven - "Raven Mad Jam" (Vol 14)
White Lightning - "Under Screaming Double Eagle" (Vol 15)
Brotherhood Of Peace - "Feel The Heat (In The Driver's Seat)" (Vol 16)
Parchment Farm - "Songs Of The Dead" (Vol 18)
Banana Bros - "Suck You In" (Vol 20)
Luke & The Apostles "Not Far Off" (Outro track) (Vol 8)
