Vinyl Relics - Texas to L.A.: The Kitchen Cinq’s Everything But
EPYSODE 49: "Everything But" by The Kitchen Cinq.
Guest: The Kitchen Cinq's Jim Parker.
This week we spin "Everything But" , the lone 1967 full-length by Amarillo’s own The Kitchen Cinq, a band that bridged Texas garage energy with West Coast pop ambitions. Often overlooked yet deeply loved by collectors, the album showcases sharp songwriting, tight harmonies, and a raw edge that set it apart from its era’s polished productions. Even better, we’re joined by guitarist Jim Parker, who offers exclusive commentary on the band’s journey from Amarillo to L.A., their connection with Lee Hazlewood, and the making of this cult classic.
I hope you dig "Everything But" as much as I do.

Only Three Lads: Top 5 Beatles Covers w/ Arthur Alexander (Poppees, Sorrows)
As arguably the single most important, most influential group in pop music history, The Beatles have been honored with thousands of cover versions. This week, Uncle Gregg, Brett, and Third Lad Arthur Alexander hand pick some of the fabbest and gearest of 'em all.
101 episodes ago, power pop hero Arthur Alexander joined us to recount his fascinating life and career: growing up in Communist Poland, getting exiled to the U.S., and being a driving force in two of the NYC's seminal power pop bands - The Poppees and Sorrows - before putting out his fine solo records One Bar Left and ...steppin' out! He was one of our favorite guests yet, so we were ecstatic to have him join us for this topic that is near and dear to his heart.
Big Stir Records presents Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow, the long lost thrid album by NYC power pop legends SORROWS, recorded in 1981 during a one-night session at the peak of their energy. This final chapter in their musical legacy includes the indie hit “Out Of My Head” and ten unreleased originals, plus three covers. The band, formed from the ashes of The Poppees, had previously made waves with their debut Teenage Heartbreak and faced struggles with their ill-fated second album (Love Too Late), which nearly ended their career. Forty years later, Arthur Alexander and the band recovered the rights to the material, leading to the surprise 2021 release of Love Too Late... The Real Album. Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow captures the band in raw form, fueled by the frustration of industry interference, delivering high-energy rock tracks like “Never Mind,” the heartfelt elegy for John Lennon “Cricket Man,” and the rockabilly scorcher “Let Me Know.” Recorded at Mediasound Studios in NYC, it’s a powerful testament to the band’s sound and vision, offering a cohesive, fiery farewell with timeless tracks that reflect both their struggle and resilience.
Thanks to Rex Broome and Christina Bulbenko from Big Stir Records. You are both amazing!

Love That Album - Blues-a-thon
Blues music means different things to different people. The popular image is of a guitarist playing 12-bar blues of the 1-4-5 variety singing
about his or her troubled life. This doesn't take into consideration
songs of lust, politics, travel or any subject really that doesn't
involve the traditional 12 bar form. The songs can be downcast, yes,
but also happy and celebratory. They can have the guitar as the focus
instrument, but also the harp (not the type that the Marx brothers
employed....but I'd be happy to be proven wrong), the piano,
horns....they can be simple, complex, slick or raw.
Welcome to episode 188 of Love That Album podcast.
Over the last few years, I've welcomed Shane Pacey, leader of the Bondi
Cigars and the Shane Pacey Trio to the show many times to talk about
records in a variety of styles, but weirdly, we've never spoken about
The Blues. I say “weirdly” because blues music is his main focus
of recording and live performance. Finally, that is rectified with
the latest episode.
Shane and I picked 4 classic blues albums to ruminate on. They're all very different in their approach to performance and production, yet they all fit nicely under the blues umbrella. We look at:
Willie Dixon - I Am The Blues
Albert King – Born Under a Bad Sign
Junior Wells – Hoodoo Man Blues
Muddy Waters – Hard Again
Of course, it wouldn't be an LTA episode if we didn't digress to other
blues-related topics....and we're remaining consistent to that ethos.
As always, it's a wonderful time in Shane's company. We discuss much,
and I learn much. He's a music encyclopedia and a fun
conversationalist.
So, if you want to know who we believe Junior Wells influenced and was
influenced by or what song by Albert King influenced Kiss (probably)
or why Marshall Chess supposedly asked Buddy Guy to kick his
arse....we have a great show for you.
Shane's trio's most recent album is the superb Who Made You King? You can get a copy from
https://shanepaceytriomusic.bandcamp.com/album/who-made-you-king. You can also look up what's happening in the world of The Bondi Cigars at
https://bondicigars.com/
Oh, and I even received some feedback from listeners about THEIR
favourite blues albums. Yay!!!
If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a
favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show
exists. If you don't enjoy the show, tell your adversaries to tune
in. We don't care who listens.....

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Oasis - What's The Story, Morning Glory?
Longtime listeners of our show know that The Wolf is an unabashed American Oasis fan. Though he wasn't onboard from the jump, once he discovered the melodies and lyrics of Noel Gallagher, he became a true believer ready to fly the Oasis flag in an attempt to convert more US fans. But Oasis were more of a phenomenon in the UK thanks to a new liberal government, the rise of Brit Pop and Cool Britannia while they were just a couple of foul-mouthed heathens against the grunge-dominated US.
However, their 2nd album, What's The Story Morning Glory, is one of the best selling records in the history of the UK and did enjoy strong success in the US. From the opening track Hello (a great way to start an album and concert) to the light and popular Champagne Supernova, Oasis created a juggernaut that was ready to explode after the success of their debut, Definitely Maybe.
And while Some Might Say and Don't Look Back in Anger would go on to be the first two #1 hits for the band in the UK, while Wonderwall would become known as one of the biggest pop/rock songs in UK history, you can't tell the full story of the album without the b-sides. Made during the heyday of CDs and CD singles, everytime the band released a new single they gave their fans 4 songs - basically an EP every couple of months. Included in these releases are some amazing songs like Acquiesce (perhaps the greatest b-side of all time), Talk Tonight, Rocking Chair, Masterplan and an amazing version of Cum on Feel The Noize. The 2014 re-release captures all those songs and more and is highly recommended by The Wolf to stream or buy.
Obviously Noel Gallagher went through an incredibly creative period using different styles like the hard rocking Morning Glory, fun and jangling She's Electric, and foot stomping Roll With It. On their current world reunion tour, they play 8 songs off the album and 3 more b-sides from the era. Their epic performance at Glastonbury reflected how far the band had come in 2 short years from just learning the songs to being the biggest rock band on the planet.
As it turns 30 and the boys are out on their victory lap tour, we take some time to dial into all the songs, the difference between their success in the UK vs the US and ponder what the future might hold for the brothers Gallagher.
