VINYL RELICS | 1964's Tobacco Road: The Raw British Invasion R&B Classic by The Nashville Teens
Epysode 75: Tobacco Road by The Nashville Teens.
Additional commentary by Uncle Herff.
In 1964, at the height of the British Invasion, one of the rawest and most hard-driving R&B records to cross the Atlantic was “Tobacco Road” by The Nashville Teens. Gritty, blues-soaked, and powered by explosive vocals, this UK hit stood apart from the jangling pop dominating the charts and delivered a ferocious take on American blues rock.
This week, we dig into how “Tobacco Road” became a defining British R&B classic, examining its roots in American blues and its impact on the emerging blues-rock movement in the UK.
What made this 1964 recording so powerful? How did The Nashville Teens carve out their place in the British Invasion era? And why does this track still sound so urgent and uncompromising decades later?
From its chart success to its enduring influence on British blues rock, we revisit a record that captured the raw energy of early UK R&B and helped shape the sound of 60s rock history.
If you’re into British Invasion music, classic 1960s R&B, blues rock origins, or overlooked vinyl-era classics, this is an essential listen.
I hope you dig Tobacco Road as much as I do.

Set Lusting Bruce - Hallmark Comfort Movies, Punk Roots, and 80 BNL Shows with Cece
Host Jesse Jackson opens a B-side episode of Set Lusting Bruce that steps outside the Springsteen universe to spotlight guest Cece’s creative joys, blending their shared love of Hallmark movies with music fandom and community. Cece, who grew up near Washington, DC, describes her family’s listening (ZZ Top, Southern rock, blues/R&B, show tunes) and how she gravitated instead to Prince, Michael Jackson, politically driven rap, and alternative/punk discovered through WHFS, MTV’s 120 Minutes, and films like Suburbia. She studied political science at Virginia Tech, attended law school at Temple, passed the New Jersey bar, but left legal work due to culture fit. Cece recounts becoming obsessed with live music—especially seeing Barenaked Ladies about 80 times, later following Steven Page’s solo work and Zoom concerts—and discusses the Avett Brothers fan song-tracking database, concertgoing community, and her current perfume hobby.

Only Three Lads - Montreal Orchestral Pop Heroes The Dears - Top 5 Albums of 2000, Part 1
Life is beautiful! This week, we have the extraordinary honour to welcome the creative nucleus of Brett's favourite band of the 21st century...Murray A. Lightburn and Natalia Yanchak from Montreal's orchestral pop noir heroes The Dears!
Life is beautiful! We are heading into the future from our normal O3L timeline to the year Two Thousaaaaand (more echo, please) to commemorate the albums that are unbelievably a quarter of century old this year. This includes The Dears' debut album, End Of A Hollywood Bedtime Story. Life is beautiful! We celebrate humble beginnings to a life less ordinary... from an innocent encounter to musical partnership to a love story of marriage and family. Along the way, The Dears have continued to hone their unique brand of indie rock, boast one of the most consistent catalogues of the past 25 years, play in front of 50,000 people at Glastonbury, and garner fan adoration and critical praise (well, mostly...ahem, Pitchfork).
Life is beautiful! The Dears' brand new album, Life Is Beautiful! Life Is Beautiful! Life Is Beautiful! is out now on Next Door Records. Their ninth studio album finds them at the top of their game, equal parts passion and compassion, beauty and defiance, intimacy and universality.
