#648 Tough Love - Harps

Hard to believe but some people think I can be a little.. er, ‘tough love-ish’. Seems unfair. And by unfair, I mean accurate. So, what is tough love? When and how should it be dispensed? If at all? Does it work for everyone? Can we be compassionate and tough? Is it tough love if it’s truth? What’s the downside of constantly telling people what they want to hear? Making them feel good at all costs? Avoiding hard conversations? Giving people a trophy every time they do something positive? At what point does a cheer squad become an unhealthy addiction? And what about tough love for ourselves? Is that simply self-loathing or perhaps something healthier, like self-awareness and humility? Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

#647 The Singing Tree Hugger - Mick Harrington

Mick Harrington is the bloke with the lawn mowing business, who sings like an angel, made the last three of ‘The Voice’ (2021), fought a six-foot-eight, 150kg Samoan in the boxing ring (for 73 seconds) to earn money for a house deposit and perhaps most impressively, he’s the guy who proposed to his partner live on national telly! Happily for Mick, Bec said “yes” and also happily for Mick, these days the lawn mowing has made way for singing to audiences all over the country. #646 Vulnerable & Courageous - Bobby Cappuccio

For this ep. of TYP, Bobby and I got together to answer some listener questions and what transpired was a deep, vulnerable and authentic conversation around some broadly-relevant human stuff. To be honest, I was in cruise-control and Bobby did all the heavy lifting this time, opening up about some deeply-personal experiences and sharing some fascinating thoughts and insights around trauma, heartbreak, delayed grief, writing our story and habit-creation. #645 Progress not Perfection - Harps & Melissa

I’ve spent a lifetime watching people train, lift, run, ride, punch, develop sporting skill, get uncomfortable, compete, win, lose, make excuses, find solutions, learn, unlearn, adapt, perform under pressure, crumble under pressure, optimise potential, waste potential, fall down, get up, triumph, overcome, adapt and quite often, give up. This episode is a freestyle riff about all of it. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

#644 The Shit Stirrer - David Gillespie

I’m gonna be honest, David Gillespie can be pretty annoying, especially when he turns up to TYP with information, research and dare I say, evidence, that doesn’t suit my version of ‘what is’. How dare he rattle my ideological cage of thought and belief around a particular topic with all his bloody annoying ‘research’. Surely my personal experience, ideas and long-held beliefs over-ride his mountain of evidence? This was an interesting chat about the value (or lack thereof) of adding fibre to our diet, where the fibre story came from, its relationship with various conditions and diseases, who funds the research and of course, we chat about all-things-poo. #643 The Great Pretender - Ben Price

Ben Price pretends to be other people. Well, to be more accurate, he’s an internationally renowned comedian and one of Australia’s best impersonators. He has mastered more than more than 200 voices and written comedy sketches impersonating elite athletes, musicians, politicians and film stars. On any given day he could be Arnold Schwarzenegger, Donald Trump, Owen Wilson, Homer Simpson or Dr Phil. I’ve known Ben for years and it was fun to catch up with him. #641 Introverts, Entrepreneurs & Oodies - Davie Fogarty

Davie Fogarty is responsible for perhaps one of Australia’s biggest fashion crimes.. the polyester jumper-blanket hybrid known as, the Oodie. More than 3 million have been sold around the world and the product’s success has landed Davie 27, on this year’s Young Rich List with an estimated wealth of $170 million. His journey began with six failed business, including a stint owning a Vietnamese café. Moving on, he decided to master the art of marketing products online and taught himself everything from copywriting to graphic design to website content by consuming YouTube videos, podcasts and reading books. He taught himself about algorithms and the systems behind the major social media platforms and his big break came in 2018 when (with $500 in savings) he launched his first product - a weighted blanket. The Davie Group now owns 10 brands, including Pupnaps, a range of calming beds for pets, helping drive annual revenue to more than $250 million. Davie is a fascinating and brilliant young man and along the way, I discovered that he’s an introvert doing extravert things. #640 Orange Sky - Nic Marchesi & Lucas Patchett

In 2014 Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett had the crazy idea of putting a washing machine and dryer in the back of a van to offer a free laundry service to those doing it tough in Brisbane. Well, seven years later that initial idea has evolved into an amazing organisation called Orange Sky and the two-man band has grown into a team of sixty-plus employees and more than 3,500 volunteers, operating 36 services across 25 locations in Australia, including six services in remote communities, and three services across two locations in New Zealand. On top of the laundry service, Orange Sky now have vehicles fitted with mobile hot showers to serve those who don’t have access to the basics. Amazing. Nic and Lucas are doing great things and I loved our chat.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
