Video Overview: "Sometimes wrong thinking can lead to the right answer. There are many creative tools a designer uses to think differently, but none is more counter-intuitive than “wrong thinking,” also called reverse thinking. Wrong thinking is when you intentionally think of the worst idea possible — the exact opposite of the accepted or logical solution, ideas that can get you laughed at or even fired — and work back from those to find new ways of solving old problems."

S10E11 - Forbes Feature - How To Find A Supportive Manager Using Ten Important Questions, with Kathy Caprino
As part of our "Forbes Feature" series, spotlighting thought-provoking Forbes videos and their key takeaways, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover explores Kathy Caprino's recent Forbes video, "How To Find A Supportive Manager Using Ten Important Questions." See the video and details here: https://youtu.be/O-rMMQUbByM. Video Overview: "Leadership involves embracing new strategies and approaches that allow managers to make the positive impact they long for and become the best supervisors. Managers must overcome their own power gaps, expand their ability to learn from critique and found new ways to be more inclusive in their leadership approach. They must built more psychological safety in their organizations, and reduced the divisiveness and conflict in their ecosystems and work cultures. Sometimes, leaders struggle with their decision-making processes, unable to make a definitive decision on a direction to pursue or action to take. In many cases, their decision processes have failed them in the past—for instance, they’ve taken the wrong career route, or chosen a terrible job, or followed the wrong leader who wreaked havoc on their life. And these faulty decisions make them feel paralyzed today as to what to do next. Or they haven’t ever really trusted themselves fully so they waffle and waver when needing to put their stake in the ground and decide on a course of action. These questions will help you cut through the noise and clutter, clarify where you really stand, and help you make the correct choice for who you are, focusing on the issues you care about, and the outcomes that matter most to you in your life and work. And these questions will help you not only choose the leader you want to follow, but also determine the way you want to show up in the world. As a start, see the following link for 10 questions that will help you identify if a particular leader or manager is truly someone you should be supporting and working for (or voting for): https://www.forbes.com/sites/kathycaprino/2020/08/22/10-questions-to-help-you-know-if-your-leader-or-manager-is-someone-you-should-be-supporting/?sh=68e7d860379d" Ranked in the Top 10 Performance Management Podcasts: https://blog.feedspot.com/performance_management_podcasts/ ; Ranked in the Top 10 Workplace Podcasts: https://blog.feedspot.com/workplace_podcasts/ ; Ranked in the Top 15 HR Podcasts: https://blog.feedspot.com/hr_podcasts/ ; Ranked in the Top 15 Talent Management Podcasts: https://blog.feedspot.com/talent_management_podcasts/ ; Ranked in the Top 15 Personal Development and Self-Improvement Podcasts: https://blog.feedspot.com/personal_development_podcasts/ ; Ranked in the Top 30 Leadership Podcasts: https://blog.feedspot.com/leadership_podcasts/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

S10E10 - Designing Meaningful Work During COVID-19: Implications for Managers and the Future of Work
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover shares his recent presentation as part of the UVU Provost COVID-19 Academic Seminar series. See the video here: https://youtu.be/JsXqMpWTOM4.
Consider how the nature of work has shifted over the past 50 years. With increased globalization, rapid technological advancement, and a shift in economic composition, the average jobs today look very little like the average jobs 50 years ago. These jobs were largely industrial and agricultural in nature, with a relatively small percentage of service sector jobs as a proportion of the overall economy. While we do not have a crystal ball and cannot predict, with any assurance, what the next 50 years will look like, past trends provide us with clues for the coming decades as we move headlong into the 4th Industrial Revolution. This revolution will be characterized by rapid technological progress where the application of new technologies will cause sudden change. As such, it seems clear that the technology of the future is changing the business of today and tomorrow. Apart from tracing historical trends to make predictions, unexpected global events, such as COVID-19 and their impact on the world of work and the economy, must be carefully considered. Such events may accelerate current trends or establish new directions. In this presentation, I will explore: (1) An Overview of COVID-19 Global Impact on Work and Economies, (2) Technological Innovations Influencing Shifting Work Conditions, (3) COVID-19 Accelerating the Shift to a New Normal in the Workplace and the Future of Work in the Post-Pandemic World, and (4) Policy Questions and Implications Related to Economic and Employee Well-being.
