S15E6 - How DHL has Retained Talent in the Logistics Industry Amidst the Pandemic, with Gordon Simpson
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) talks with Gordon Simpson about DHLs talent investments last year, as well as the changes he foresees in the logistics human resources strategy for 2021 and 2022. As the COVID-19 virus continues to change and shape industries globally, human resources teams have had to adapt and create strategies to retain and stimulate employees who are now working from home. This technological shift has particularly affected the logistics sector, which prior to the pandemic relied on in-person operations to carry out day-to-day tasks. See the video here: https://youtu.be/rgtCivpe5-Y.
Gordon Simpson (https://www.linkedin.com/in/gordon-simpson-5731736/) is the SVP and Head of Human Resources for DHL Global Forwarding’s Americas’ region based out of Miami, Florida. He is also the global Employee Relations lead for DGF. In 2006, Gordon began working at DHL as Senior Vice President of Human Resources for the Asia Pacific region. He led the integration of 21 Asia Pacific countries following the Deutsche Post acquisition of Exel, as well as a number of subsequent reorganisation efforts. He was instrumental in developing and implementing a regional HR strategy to align with divisional and global strategies. He relocated to the US to assume his current role at the start of 2012. Prior to joining DHL, he worked in HR for various companies around the world in the oil, chemical, and shipping industries, and has lived in South Africa, Thailand, Singapore and the US.

S14E30 - Inspiring TED Talks - Keep Your Goals to Yourself, with Derek Sivers
In this "Inspiring TED Talks" HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) explores Derek Sivers' 2010 TED Talk, "Keep Your Goals to Yourself." See the video here: https://www.ted.com/talks/derek_sivers_keep_your_goals_to_yourself/details#t-33642. Video Overview: "After hitting on a brilliant new life plan, our first instinct is to tell someone, but Derek Sivers says it's better to keep goals secret. He presents research stretching as far back as the 1920s to show why people who talk about their ambitions may be less likely to achieve them." Derek Sivers is best known as the founder of CD Baby. A professional musician since 1987, he started CD Baby by accident in 1998 when he was selling his own CD on his website, and friends asked if he could sell theirs, too. CD Baby was the largest seller of independent music on the web, with over $100M in sales for over 150,000 musician clients.
In 2008, Sivers sold CD Baby to focus on his new ventures to benefit musicians, including his new company, MuckWork, where teams of efficient assistants help musicians do their "uncreative dirty work."
