Kingdom of Heaven in Exile: A Novel Rosh Hashanah Framework
Rosh Hashanah marks the day of the creation of Adam on Day Six of Genesis. The creation of Adam facilitated the coronation of God as King. Because Adam was endowed with the choice to accept or reject God, his decision to submit himself to God and his Dominion resulted in the establishment of the Kingdom of God. Rosh Hashanah is thus the day of the creation and re-creation of man, and also the day of the coronation and the re-coronation of God. But what does coronating God in modern times – when the world has gone so far astray from God – look like? In this wonderful podcast, we explore a sharp and incisive essay written by my grandfather of blessed memory. We learn how the forces of evil have occupied the world, dethroning, as it were, God from His proper place. So long as this evil dominates the world, God’s Throne is incomplete. But not all have succumbed to the pitiful usurpers regime. There are still some people who are loyal to God and His rule. We maintain Fidelity to God’s Kingdom in Exile. We are the Resistance.

The Alchemy of Repentance
Repentance is one of God’s great gifts to humanity. The ability to move past our mistakes, to cleanse ourselves from our previous trauma, to expunge sin and any of its after effects is indeed a great gift. But this gift may come with some scary packaging. We are all a bit intimidated with the notion of change. We recoil and get defensive when anyone points out our flaws. Repentance is a great gift, but to make the most of it, we have to become adept at utilizing it. In this podcast, we show positive and pleasant angles of repentance. When you are finished with this episode, you will be motivated to make the most of this repentance season, and to once and for all ascend above your previous misconduct and embark on the path of elevation and holiness and righteousness and purity.

Divine Mirroring: The Secret to Earning a Merciful Judgment on Rosh Hashanah
The judgment on Rosh Hashanah is comprehensive: every single human has his or her moment of judgment before God. Even the dead are judged again each year. The judgment covers not only our behavior with respect to fulfilling our obligations to God, it also covers interpersonal matters. If we are meritorious, we will be forgiven for all our sins on Yom Kippur, but that atones only sins down between man and God. For interpersonal sins, we are not forgiven until we appease our friend and elicit their forgiveness. But these two domains are not entirely separate. In this short and sweet podcast sourced from the writings of my grandfather of blessed memory, we learn how important our interpersonal behavior is vis-a-vis our status before God. Now is the time to prepare.

Elul Cheat Sheet
Preparing for the High Holidays can be daunting. How can anyone adequately prepare for standing in judgment in front of the Heavenly tribunal? But prepare we must. The month of Elul is designated for preparing for the awesome days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Our Sages took these days very seriously and were completely immersed in preparation. But we are regular people, ordinary, common folk. Is there something that we can do to prepare? Is there a cheat sheet to simplify Elul? Is there a way to distill this month to its essence? In this wonderful podcast we share the three main pillars of this month and learn the ways how even us lay people can have an immensely productive and powerful Elul.

Elul: Month of Personal Reinvention
We are on the doorstep of the month of mercy, the month that precedes the high holidays, the month of Elul. The high holidays are very significant and auspicious days, and it is imperative that we prepare for them. How ought we prepare? What are the particular points of emphasis that we should stress during these days? In this podcast we are guided by a chapter in my grandfather Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe’s classic work, Alei Shur. This chapter is titled “month of mercy” and can be found in Volume 2, section 3, chapter 12, page 413.

Biblical Longevity
We all want to live long. But how long is a long life? Centenarians are still rare. Global life expectancy is around 70 years old. In healthier, richer countries, maybe 80. But when you open up Scripture, you find ages an order of magnitude larger. Adam lived to 930. Methuselah to 969. How do we understand the radical difference in the ages of the ancients? What changed from then till now? Why did God shrink the average life expectancy? This question intrigued many of our sages, and in this very fun and interesting podcast, we explore some of the ideas that they shared.

Tisha Bav: Why We Mourn
The ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar. All manner of calamities and tragedies and disasters befell our people on this day. On this day the nation was condemned to wonder in the wilderness for 40 years. On this day both Temples were destroyed. On this day, the last stronghold of the Jewish rebellion in Betar was destroyed. Over the millennia, many more calamities occurred on this most inauspicious day. It is a day of fasting and mourning. What exactly are we mourning about? What is the purpose of mourning? What ought we to do on this day? In this special podcast we learn about the essence of the sadness of this day, and what we can do about it.

Assault on Dina: A Deep Exploration of a Third Rail Topic
Some subjects are way too dicey address publicly – electrified third rail subjects which zap anyone who approaches it. But Blake Cohen is not afraid of third rails. In fact, he recently launched a podcast that is dedicated exclusively to the untouchable “Third Rails” of Judaism. Fittingly, his show was called “Third Rail Judaism”, where he explores and ponders some of the forbidden subjects that others are too scared to tackle. I was honored when Blake asked me to be interviewed for the first episode, an exploration of the kidnapping and assault of Dina, daughter of Jacob.

Demystifying Chareidi Opposition to IDF Enlistment
Perhaps the most controversial and divisive subject that dominates Israeli society today is the question of the blanket army exemption given to Yeshiva students. Someone whose Torah is their profession is entitled to defer and ultimately bypass mandatory constriction to the IDF. What is the rationale for this exemption? Why are the ultra-orthodox (Chareidi) communities so adamantly opposed to serving in the army? Don’t they know the imperative to help contribute towards the safety and protection of the nation? Don’t they know the chastisement that Moshe levied on the tribes of Reuben and Gad when they asked to stay on the East Bank of the Jordan? What are the ways by which these seemingly intractable gaps can be bridged? In this podcast we attempt to demystify the subject of Chareidi refusal to enlist in the IDF.

This special podcast is dedicated in loving memory of R’ Shlomo Ben Avigdor Moshe and R’ Yitzchak Yaakov ben Eliyahu. And it should be a merit for all their descendants.

A Rigorous and Comprehensive Torah Study Regimen
What would a comprehensive and rigorous regimen of Torah study look like? Suppose someone wants to really become a Torah maestro. What would be a fitting schedule of course work for them to become a well-rounded Torah scholar? Torah is the antidote to the evil inclination. How much Torah and how many Torah domains and disciplines must the person be immersed in in order to have the antidote fully administered? In this very interesting and different sort of podcast, we learn the principles of the two types of Talmud study.
