This Jewish Life is Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe’s flagship podcast. Since its founding in January of 2013, This Jewish Life has featured a delightful potpourri of podcast episodes on a myriad of Jewish subjects. In its current incarnation, the podcast focuses on exploring the deeper elements of Jewish life and philosophy. In each episode our objective is to go a bit deeper into subjects that we may be familiar with, to plumb the depths and uncover the essence of the beauty and sublimity of Jewish life and customs, and Torah wisdom. On Death and Dying: The Jewish View
Death is the destiny of mankind. Since Adam and Eve made the regrettable decision to consume from the Tree of Knowledge, Good and Evil, man has been condemned to die. But what exactly is death? How does the experience differ from person to person? Why is it a subject worthy of our focus? These should be a simple questions to answer, or so it would seem. In this very special and unique podcast, we will explore the subject of death in a way that will both terrify and inspire you. This subject was suggested by the participants of one of my classes. I am glad they suggested it. I found the topic really interesting, and I am sure you will too.

The Divorce Vaccine – First Dose: How to Select the Right Spouse
What do you are about to hear is a vaccine against divorce. This first dose is intended for single people, who have not yet decided who they want to spend the rest of their lives with. If you are already married, you’ve made your choice and this part of the vaccine is not relevant to you. You can still listen to it, but be aware that this aspect of the vaccine is not pertinent to you.
In this series, we are working with the assumption that divorce is an epidemic that is solvable with a vaccine. Our solution will be painful, like having a needle jabbed in your shoulder, but it is intended to prevent a much greater pain. Like a vaccine, we are not promising 100% efficacy, but we’ll get close.
Stay tuned for the second dose of the vaccine. We are going to release it in a couple of weeks, after there’s been enough time for the antibodies to get in. There will probably be also at least one booster shot as well.

But I’m a Good Person with Dan Kullman
When my dear friend, Dan Kullman, asked me to join him on The Shema Podcast to discuss the phenomenon of people saying, “But I’m a good person,” I was not aware of how pervasive such a sentiment is and why discussing it would be interesting. In the end we had a delightful and stimulating conversation. Dan was kind enough to allow me to post the conversation on my podcast, so here it is. If you enjoy this conversation, be sure to check out Dan’s podcast, The Shema Podcast.

Hoshana Rabbah, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah: The Meaning of Sukkot’s Climax
The Festival of Sukkot ends with a three-day constellation of significant days: The seventh day is Hoshana Rabbah, the eighth is Shemini Atzeres, and the ninth is Simchas Torah. These days have unique customs not found in any other day in the Jewish calendar. In this sweeping podcast episode, we explore these days, plumb their mysterious and Kabbalistic meaning, and demonstrate how they are a fitting culmination of Sukkot, and indeed of the entire Festival season.

Dreaming of a Sunny Sukkah
We are amid the incredible Festival of Sukkos. Each day (except Shabbos) we shake the Lulav and Esrog, we celebrate with our family, and we dwell in our temporary residence, the Sukkah. But what happens when the weather does not comply? What do we do when it gets swelteringly hot? In this podcast, we demonstrate that an unpleasant Sukkah is something that ought to be not only tolerable, but highly desirable. Give it a listen and tell me if you agree.

The Glorious Clouds of Sukkos
Over the course of the Festival of Sukkos (sometimes spelled “Sukkot”, sometimes “Succos”, rivaled only by the nightmare of trying to find the definitive spelling of Chanukah – Hannukah, Hanukkah), we must dwell in a temporary structure, a Sukkah. Why? “In order that your generations know that [God] made Sukkahs for us during the Exodus.” After we were redeemed from the enslavement of Egypt, the Almighty made us Sukkah, and we commemorate that miracle more than 3300 years later with a seven day Festival. What is the nature of the Sukkah that God made for us? Our Sages tell us that they were the “Clouds of Glory.” What are the clouds of glory and what do they have to do with the Festival of Sukkos? Listen to this podcast and find out.

Jonah: Studying the Yom Kippur Reading on a Deeper Level (Rebroadcast)
On Yom Kippur afternoon, we read the 48-verse Book of Jonah, which tells of a renegade prophet, Jonah, who defies the directive of God and refuses to castigate the people of Nineveh and instead escapes from God to Tarshish – with mixed results. A simple reading of the story reveals a tale of repentance, both of the protagonist, Jonah, and of the people of Nineveh. But our Sages let us in on a secret that the Book of Jonah contains a hidden, kabbalistic story embedded beneath the story – which also teaches us powerful, topical messages for the Day of Atonement.

Reconciliation and Forgiveness: The Interpersonal Component of Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur is a day of atonement and expiation. On this auspicious day, the Almighty forgives us for all our transgressions and we become purified before God. But the purification of Yom Kippur is limited to sins between man and God. For interpersonal transgressions, there is no atonement unless the aggressor appeases and secures forgiveness from the aggrieved. In this sweeping episode we discuss the nature of interpersonal transgressions and the tremendous sensitivity and delicateness required to not cause another person pain or loss; we scour the process of how to gain atonement for interpersonal transgressions; and we talk about the importance and the challenge of forgiving others who have wronged us.

The Seven Wonders of Repentance
Rosh Hashana kickstarts the Ten Days of Repentance which culminates in Yom Kippur. This is the time to repent. But repentance is a daunting and terrifying concept. All change is frightening. In this very special edition of the podcast, we shed a new light on repentance. We discover that repentance is a great gift that the Almighty gave us. It is supernatural and wondrous in many ways. Given that our Sages tell us that repentance is one of the seven things that were created before the world was created, we have the Seven Wonders of the pre-World and the Seven Wonders of Repentance. This episode is guaranteed to reshape your understanding of repentance and to make your season of repentance more meaningful and efficacious.
