Era l’epoca della Guerra dei cent’anni. La Francia era invasa dagli inglesi, e i nobili francesi, i più orgogliosi del mondo, passavano di sconfitta in sconfitta. Nel 1356, alla battaglia di Poitiers, era addirittura caduto prigioniero del nemico il re di Francia, Giovanni il Buono.
