207: Are Artists Born or Made?

Finding Your Artist Spark Harvey Dinnerstein, Proudly Realistic Painter, passed away at 94. He documented the early days of the civil rights movement in evocative drawings. Later, his paintings examined details of the everyday life around him. Hear how current events prompted him to use art to chronicle the people in the civil rights movement. He had to stop teaching when the pandemic hit, but he never stopped creating. Hear his philosophy on finding the artists spark in the absence of inspiration. Looking for some inspiration? Listen to episode 123, Restore Your Artists Heart here How to Evoke Emotion with Your Descriptions of Your Artwork Many lingerie brands use descriptive words that connote romance, seduction, and sex to describe their products. The Natori brand went in a completely different direction, appealing to modern women who want to feel sophisticated. Their marketing copy is crafted accordingly. Successful brands use feeling words to describe their product. Instead of being perceived as a commodity, Natori counts on us feeling good about ourselves when we wear their brand. People will pay more for a product that makes them feel good and gives them pleasure. This is one of the things I break down in a chapter of my upcoming book. Order your copy of the book and get the bonuses now! Is it Worth it? I recently moved to a two-bedroom apartment in NYC. I love our life here, but I find myself dreaming of more windows and natural light. While preparing to move in, I found out there was an extra window that had been intentionally covered by sheet rock for a specific design aesthetic that the previous owner wanted. Is it worth knocking down a wall for the extra light? Is it worth it is a question I hear in my artist community. Is it worth it to create a website for my art? Is it worth it to continue painting if I'm not selling much work? Is a show in the city worth it? Is there a window hidden behind the wall in your life? I believe it's always worth it. For support to be the artist you are meant to be check out the resources ready and waiting for you in the Artist Incubator. Are We Born Artists? Arnold Skolnick designed the iconic poster for the famed festival in 1969. He actually did it in a weekend after the first design was rejected by the local merchants. He was paid $12,000, a hefty sum in 1969 to be sure. Skolnick is also known for his belief that "you don't become an artist, you either are or are not." I'd love to know what you think. I've shared this on Instagram and would love your insights. Let me know what you think on Instagram. Keeping Up With What's Working Now When I was getting ready to sell my suburban home, I had a rude awakening. I was told that my brown furniture was out of style and I was even asked to remove some of it. Then I decided if brown wasn't working then I'll paint it all white. A friend asked me how I knew what to do. Honestly, I didn't. I asked at the hardware store and with some painful trial and error, I figured out a method that worked for me. I've had 25 years of trial and error making a living as an artist. My incubator is where you can get the short cuts and insights and the benefit of the lessons I learned along the way. Here's a great example of keeping up with what's working or, like my brown furniture, what's not working. Check out What's Wrong with Your Instagram (and how to make it better) here.

206: Investing in Yourself With Wildlife Artist Priya Gore and Miriam Schulman

"When you invest in yourself, the universe invests in you." -unknown Becoming wildly successful does not happen by chance or accident. Success isn't something most people just stumble into, but it is something many of us can make a reality. You have to be willing to put in the work it takes to achieve greatness, and it starts with investing in yourself. Today's guest, Priya Gore, comes from an engineering background and a family of doctors that wouldn't readily accept a career in art as a successful choice, and yet Priya is living life as a wildlife artist out of Australia. Key Highlights of a Successful 6-Figure Career in Art Priya invested in herself with the Artist Incubator Coaching Program 1st She is allowing herself to focus on a style and genre Being a niched artist allows you to build series that interests collectors Having an advertising budget creates higher revenue opportunities You have to focus on production 80% of the time to hit new levels of success Enjoying the process is a must for the ultimate experience "Having a niche, and really understanding what that is, and a focus style will make you more successful…" -Miriam Schulman In this episode, Priya unpacks in great detail how she's been able to generate a 6-figure income selling art to collectors through the Australian based company Blue Thumb. When you consider her advertising budget, how she's strategically increasing her individual art sales, growing her base of collectors and that she started with investing in a coaching program, her success as an artist looks less coincidental and more tactical in how she's approaching art as a business. When you invest in yourself, other people will get behind you. This is how Priya's advertising dollars with Blue Thumb are being maximized. "I don't think it's about easy or challenging, but it's just about that I enjoy the process." -Priya Gore Interested in applying for the Artist Incubator Program's Masterclass Track? 205: Forget Perfectionism in Your Art

What Artists Can learn from the Venice Biennale Curator This is the world's longest running, large scale survey of contemporary art. It is looked to locally and internationally to discover the next new great artist. The curator is Cecilia Alemani, and I went to hear her share her insights about the exhibition. She went into detail about how she made the multitude of decisions involved in this exhibit. Hear how she uses a 3D layout and how she chose the name for the exhibition in addition to how she selected the art itself. Her strategies are something you can use as well. Classic Artist Mistakes On the upper west side in NYC, there's a "flea market" every Sunday. I have checked it out a few times and I wanted to coach some of the artists so that they could sell more art and make more money. Collect addresses to follow up – this is too not be doing it. Offer to keep in touch. I had to ask an artist multiple times how I could connect with him in the future. Make it easy! Download The Artists Profit Plan Where Can You See Bansky in New York City I recently saw graffiti art here in NYC by the street artist Bansky. He's from Great Britain and in addition to his art, he is also an activist. Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based Street artist, political activist and film director whose real name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation. He combines existing items into his art. If you are in NY, you can see his art on the south wall on the Designer Show Warehouse at 79th street and Broadway. The owner of the building has taken steps to preserve the art, so hopefully it will be there for many more years. The Art World remembers Edmonia Lewis I love to find the most interesting stamps when I go to the post office. Nothing wrong with the flag, but why not find something more interesting? In February during black history month, I bought some stamps featuring Edmonia Lewis. Check out her story. She was the first sculptor of African American and Native American (Mississauga) descent to achieve international recognition. Her father was Black, and her mother was Chippewa (Ojibwa) Indian. She has a fascinating life story and despite a number of setbacks she never stopped creating art. You'll be inspired by her story and her tenacity. More on this topic: The Rise of the Black Portrait Artist Forget Perfectionism in Your Art Let's talk about the deliberate mistake. In many handmade Persian rugs and carpets, you will discover the deliberate mistake. Followers of Islam believe only Allah makes things perfectly, and therefore to weave a perfect rug or carpet would be an offence to God. 204: Storyworthy with Matthew Dicks and Miriam Schulman

As artists, you're likely great with painting a story on canvas, in watercolor, through music or whatever medium you play in, but storytelling is a wonderful skill we can all benefit from improving. Telling stories well is art, and it's something that each and every one of us can do easily every day. Matthew Dicks is an international best seller with awards for being a nationally recognized storyteller. He joined us in Episode 203 and discussed his latest book, Someday Is Today, which I highly recommend checking out! In this two-part series, we're continuing the conversation around his other book, Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life through the Power of Storytelling. So now we're diving into what the art of storytelling looks like for the average person who doesn't identify as a storyteller. Noteworthy points with master storyteller, Matthew Dicks: Why story worthy moments on the most boring days are precious commodities How Homework for Life makes you look at your days in a meaningful way What Crash and Burn style writing is and how you can get started (right now!) 4 strategies for dealing with negative people and why an enemy list is a superpower Live a better life with more 'Yes' and get remarkable results "Most of the time, we allow our memories to be tossed away like trash, when they are our most precious commodities." -Matthew Dicks Matthew Dicks is the co-founder and artistic director of Speak Up, a storytelling organization that produces shows in New England. In addition to being an internationally bestselling author of multiple fiction and non-fiction books, he is also a 56-time Moth StorySLAM champion and 9-time GrandSLAM champion. The most important thing for you to learn today is that, given all the accolades Matthew has, his best advice for being a better storyteller is to simply become a better listener. "Be the last person to speak in every room you enter, and I think you'll find it's really helpful in terms of just being a better communicator and a better person." -Matthew Dicks Interested in applying for the Artist Incubator Program's Masterclass Track? 203: Someday Is Today with Matthew Dicks and Miriam Schulman

The question we all really want to know is how to do more with the time we have. Some people crush a 2-hour window, whereas others of us struggle along and get distracted by TV series and social media. Matthew Dicks is an international best seller with awards for being a nationally recognized storyteller. His latest book, Someday Is Today, 22 Simple Actionable Ways to Propel Your Creative Life is highly recommended and worth checking out! In this two-part series, we're talking about some fun concepts and ideas that will help propel your creativity in new ways. Key ideas Matthew makes digestible and simple enough to implement: Make your sleep sacred and honor the rest you need Make the most of your work by repurposing your pieces Be thoughtful about what you spend your time on Consult your future self to make the best daily decisions "I think we solve a lot of problems unconsciously when we allow those problems to move to the back." -Matthew Dicks Matthew's approach is extremely well thought out. Coming close to a near-death experience has given him the motivation and perspective he needs to emphasize making the best of every day, every decision, and what he chooses to make time for. In the next part of this interview, Matthew will unpack eating a compliment sandwich, the enemies list, and why be a criminal and carry a burglar bag. 202: Creativity Rules the World with Maria Brito and Miriam Schulman

201: Your Values Matter with Shubhashree Sangameswaran and Miriam Schulman

Unlike many careers you can commit to, art and creativity is unique for many reasons. You may find other skillful careers people do as a side hustle in addition to their day job, but unless it's creative work, how many accountants are doing taxes because it just feels good to their soul and their mental health? Art releases dopamine, it is therapeutic, and often it's a form of self-expression and self-care. The list of benefits for amateurs and professionals are equally powerful. In this episode, Shubhashree Sangameswaran joins me and discusses all the ways art has added value to not only her life, but to the lives of others. It's truly a gift that keeps giving when you find a way to align it perfectly with your values. Shubhashree started her work career as an engineer and didn't reignite her passion for art until several years later. She is an illustrator, former artist and activist for sustainability. Though she left her career in engineering, Shubhashree is mindful of her role within society and its impact on her children. She lives a life aligned with her values through her art as an online instructor and creator. Key lessons with Shubhashree for everyone: A daily art practice for yourself has huge benefits in your self-care Being curious creates new paths and opportunities if you allow it You can use your art to spread positivity and messages of sustainability Pivoting careers for what makes you feel alive and connected is possible even for a mother with a full-time career in engineering "Taking the time out to draw every single day for 100 days, in some way felt like I was just taking some part of the day back to myself" -Shubhashree Sangameswaran Shubhashree has been creating journals and illustrations for the Brooklyn Art Project dedicated to sustainability. 200: Radical Reinvention with Miriam Schulman

Reinventing yourself can sound intimidating, it may sound like betrayal on some level, and it can even feel inauthentic to some. To others, reinvention is an opportunity for rebirth and realizing your full potential. People often reinvent themselves to let go of what no longer serves them, get to new heights of success, and shed what they don't like about themselves. Reinvention is something you can totally embrace as an artist and a creative as you grow in skill and move through different phases of your life. "Commit to reinvent yourself, to know that real growth happens in a place of discomfort." Les Brown Inspiration Place Podcast is celebrating its 200th episode with a Free Coaching Podcast Party! To help celebrate this occasion, leave a review for Inspiration Place Podcast on your favorite podcasting app, take a screenshot and fill out a short form and submit a coaching question for me by July 15, 2022. You may be one of the 20 winners selected to win an Amazon Gift Card. Everyone who submits a review will be invited to the Free Coaching Podcast Party. In this episode, I'm sharing my story of radical reinvention. Moving several times in my childhood created the desire, the need, and the opportunity to reinvent who I was and how I was showing up for others, and most importantly for myself. Reinvention is a tool available to you at any time: Declaring yourself an artist and believing it for yourself Embracing your inner weirdo and not vilifying what makes you different Navigating the different phases of life, pain, and discomfort "This new identity explained my unique ability to look at ordinary things and see something that others didn't." -Miriam Schulman Episodes Mentioned: The Belief Triad Embrace Your Inner Weirdo For full show notes, go to schulmanart.com/200 ++++++++++++++++++++ 🎉FREE GOODIES!🎉 Don't forget to check out the Inspiration Place goodie bag. 199: World Watercolor Month with Charlie O'Shields and Miriam Schulman

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." Pablo Picasso Whether this is a proven fact or not is irrelevant. What matters is that there is an innate connection between children and creativity in all forms. Whether it's through paint, imagination, or creative play in a universe far, far away, there is an inner child in each of us that could help our creative juices and inspire in new ways. "Treat your inner child well and make sure you give it plenty of things to keep its imagination growing" -Charlie O'Shields Today's guest, Charlie O'Shields is a Creative Director by day with side hobbies and projects that absolutely light up the world. He started a blog and a 2000-day art journey in 2015 that became the Doodlewash blog and so much more. He's authored multiple books helping people connect to their inner child and "create like a kid again." Charlie also founded Watercolor month which is a nonprofit 31-day challenge and community dedicated to watercolor painting. In addition to being all around amazing, Charlie shares: How to show up, practice, and share your work Encouraging people to get creative How Happy Hour turned into much more than art The inspiration for World Watercolor Month in July "It's just a matter of doing creative things on a regular basis. And it's not just doing them, it's a practice, everything in life is a practice. - Charlie O'Shields Even if art is your business and something you take seriously, Charlie echoes a great reminder that adding fun into your work and a bit of joy goes a long way for the people that see it and feel it in your art. 198: Radiant Wild Heart with Shereen Sun and Miriam Schulman

One of the best parts of being creative is deciding to live with intention, on purpose, with passion and heart. Art cannot be contained and restrictive. It's meant to be liberating for the artist and a sacred escape from a world that judges and sometimes lacks the vibrant colors of the artistic spirit. Today's guest, Shereen Sun, Founder of Radiant Wild Heart, embodies the rebellious spirit of a true artist. She is a multiple six-figure creativity mentor that identifies as a queer Muslim American woman who is also neurodivergent. Like Miriam, she too is in the process of writing her first book. If you've considered or are still pondering writing a book, whether you are going the traditional path or self-publishing, this episode is such a great resource and opportunity to gather two book writing experiences at once. Shereen is publishing her first book, Radiant Wild Heart while still running her business. In addition to the book writing journey, some other key points touched on include: The importance of sharing your values and authenticity Living your creative mission and nurturing your inner artist Living your truth, coming out queer, and attracting the right people to your brand "When you tell your story, your real story, and you come out of the closet and say who you really are, what your values are, and what you love to do, you're going to attract the right people where you don't have to hide anymore" -Shereen Sun If you want in on the Artist Incubator program: Check out the Mastermind Track or Check out the Self Study Track Schulman Art Instagram For full show notes, go to schulmanart.com/198 ++++++++++++++++++++ 🎉FREE GOODIES!🎉 Don't forget to check out the Inspiration Place goodie bag.
