Navigating the FODMAP diet for IBS treatment with Dr Jane Muir
We spend three quarters of a billion pounds on probiotic products that promise to balance our microbiome. We sip on kombucha and pickle kimchi. The evidence stacks when we discuss the connection between our brain and gut. With two out 10 people in the UK suffering with IBS, and no cure for those who suffer with IBS, severe IBS symptoms can heavily implode on peoples lives.
In this episode I speak to Dr Jane Muir, lead dietitian at Monash university. Researchers at Monash discovered certain short chain carbohydrates could not be digested and caused aggravation for many people with IBS, naming these, FODMAPs. Although research suggests that there is not one single cause for IBS, there are a variety of treatments, including that can help improve symptoms and thus quality of life.
We discuss how a low FODMAP diet may help improve symptoms of IBS, alongside other treatments such as CBT, hypnotherapy and movement.

When can our relationships with food become problematic with Renee Mcgregor
We all have an emotional connection with food, and for some during lockdown this has been emphasized more than others. Disruption to many of our carefully planned routines, lack of access to social networks and increased anxiety means food has become a comfort in time of need.

Dairy vs Soy, which is right for you with Dr Izzy Smith
The UK is now drinking 50% less milk than they were in 1974, and almost a quarter of Britons are consuming plant-based milk alternatives as the popularity of vegan diets continues to grow. Yet there is still a lot confusion about dairy and soy milk when it comes to our health. Does soy affect our breast cancer risk? Does soy interfere with our hormones? We've heard many times dairy leaches calcium from our bones, is this true?
With so many misconceptions between soy and dairy, it's hard to differentiate between fact and fiction. In the first series of season 2, I speak to Dr Izzy Smith who is a medical doctor working in Sydney Australia, specialising in general internal medicine and endocrinology aka the study of hormone health. She is also a qualified personal trainer and ambassador for the Men’s health charity Movember and a passionate runner and athlete herself.

This week Sarah Ann Macklin speaks to double Olympic gold medalist, Victoria Pendleton CBE. Mental health problems are one of the world’s most common conditions, with behavioural patterns such as depression and anxiety affecting millions of people every year. Startlingly, 1 in 6 people experience a common mental health problem every week. Victoria shares her personal experience with mental health, relaying the dark times that she experienced at her deepest lows with depression and battling thoughts of suicide. Victoria shares for the first time about her eating disorder, of her struggle with anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Victoria explains how her depression and ultimately extremely low self worth and warped body image lead to her to use food as a control mechanism to regain the power that she felt she had lost.
