S1E15: With so many million-dollar HDB resale flats, are the latest cooling measures enough?

Synopsis: Every second and fourth Friday of the month, The Straits Times' Insight editor Grace Ho takes a hard look at political and social issues of the day with her expert guests. We've all read reports of million-dollar HDB resale flats. To ensure that HDB flats remain affordable and to encourage prudent borrowing amid the rising interest rate environment, a slew of new measures were announced on Sept 30. One of them is a wait-out period of 15 months before private property owners are allowed to buy a non-subsidised HDB resale flat. This is a temporary measure that will be reviewed based on overall demand and market changes. In the studio to unpack the thinking behind the measures, as well as their impact, is Tan Tee Khoon, Country Manager of PropertyGuru Singapore.  Highlights (click/tap above): 1:15 Why the cooling measures are needed  3:40: Why is the wait-out period set at 15 months? Is the move too draconian? 8:20 Will the latest moves push demand to smaller HDB flats?  10:32 How the private housing and rental markets could be affected 12:51 Possible indicators the Government could look at before deciding whether to discontinue the measures Produced by: Grace Ho (graceho@sph.com.sg), Ernest Luis and Hadyu Rahim Edited by: Hadyu Rahim Follow In Your Opinion Podcast each month here: Channel: https://str.sg/w7Qt Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/wukb Spotify: https://str.sg/w7sV Google Podcasts: https://str.sg/wztc SPH Awedio app: https://www.awedio.sg/ Website: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg  Grace Ho's articles: https://str.sg/w7sr Read ST's Opinion section: https://str.sg/w7sH --- Discover ST's special edition podcasts: Singapore's War On Covid: https://str.sg/wuJa The Unsolved Mysteries of South-east Asia: https://str.sg/wuZ2 Stop Scams: https://str.sg/wuZB Invisible Asia: https://str.sg/wuZn --- Discover more ST podcast series: Asian Insider: https://str.sg/JWa7 Green Pulse: https://str.sg/JWaf Health Check: https://str.sg/JWaN Your Money & Career: https://str.sg/wB2m SG Extra: https://str.sg/wukR #PopVultures: https://str.sg/JWad ST Sports Talk: https://str.sg/JWRE Bookmark This!: https://str.sg/JWas Lunch With Sumiko: https://str.sg/J6hQ Discover ST Podcasts: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Discover BT Podcasts: https://bt.sg/pcPL Follow our shows then, if you like short, practical podcasts! #inyouropinion  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1E1: Is $1-million fine on social media firms enough to make Internet safer? Josephine Teo answers: ST Podcasts

Synopsis: The Straits Times analyses Singapore's latest news and announcements. Regulators will act swiftly - "in a matter of hours" - to ensure social media platforms respond in a robust manner to deal with egregious content, says Minister for Communications and Information Josephine Teo. In an interview with The Straits Times' Cheow Sue-Ann, she shares plans of how officers will be deployed to regulate a fast-moving space like social media. S1E88: Why governments have the power to drive climate action

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change. Governments are at the heart of global climate action, setting the policies and direction for businesses and the public. And their influence will be on full display at this year’s COP27 climate talks in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt. Delegates from nearly 200 nations are tasked with accelerating action on climate change and boosting finance for poorer countries.  But many governments have been too slow to act, leading to rising greenhouse gas emissions and global temperatures. What can be done to get them to act? In this episode, ST's climate change editor David Fogarty and co-host Audrey Tan speak with Ms Sharon Seah, Senior Fellow at the ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute and coordinator of the Climate Change in Southeast Asia Programme, to discuss the key role of governments and what steps they can take to accelerate climate action, especially in South-east Asia. Highlights of conversation (click/tap above): 1:28 Why are governments so important in speeding up climate change action?2:34 What are some of the tools governments can use to increase green investments? 5:25  Why are governments so slow to act? 9:57 What are the kinds of climate actions people in Asean expect from their governments? 14:00 "We need a major transformation of economies.
