When seeing patients, I always recommend people to gather their Fertility TEAM, and the T is for therapist. I'm so excited to have Dr. Loree Johnson share her valuable info with all of you today. In this conversation, we're going to be talking about some of the mental health impacts of being a fertility patient. I'll be asking Dr. Johnson about the difference between Infertility Stress and Infertility Trauma, we're going to talk about grief as it relates to fertility (and how it's different than other grief), and she'll share how to navigate the stress of being pregnant after having loss. Dr. Loree Johnson is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) with more than 25 years of experience as a clinician, educator, and clinical supervisor. After her first-hand experience with fertility challenges taught her the importance of self-care for managing the physical and emotional stress that come with the fertility process, coupled with the lack of representation she saw of therapists of color in the fertility space, Dr. Loree found her purpose supporting individuals and couples on their path to parenthood. PCOS is one of the most common and most misunderstood conditions that we treat as reproductive endocrinologists, and this week I'm delighted to be joined on the podcast by Dr. Lucky Sekhon of RMA of New York to talk all about it. PCOS stands for polycystic ovary syndrome, and that name can lead to some confusion. A lot of people think that they probably have cysts in their ovaries. The truth is that all women have multiple cysts (which are really small follicles that house eggs) in their ovaries. Those with PCOS have follicles that look like what we call a "string of pearls" on the periphery of their ovaries, and often have irregular (or no) cycles. When you're pregnant after IVF, you're likely beaming with joy while at the same time trying to keep negative, worrisome thoughts in check. Am I right? Today, I'm so honored to have Kristin McQuaid joining me to talk about a very touching and powerful topic: support for surrogate mothers and intended parents through infant loss. Kristin and her husband, Steve, started a non-profit organization in honor of their daughter, London Quinn, who was born still at 39 weeks in July, 2021. They named the organization "London is the Reason," and the non-profit focuses on supporting surrogates and their intended parents through infant loss. I feel quite privileged to have Kristin share her story, and the story of her daughter London with us. I know you will be moved by what she shares. We will be talking about her diagnosis of stage four endometriosis, how she learned about surrogacy, and how she, her husband and their gestational carrier navigated through the loss of London last year. She's passionate about easing the real suffering that people experience from anxiety and mental health issues. I can't wait to have her come on and share some new insights about anxiety (it turns out it's not just a "neck up" problem), the difference between "false" anxiety and true anxiety, and how to handle the anxiety that often comes up as a fertility patient. We'll also be talking more about her book, which came out this year, titled "The Anatomy of Anxiety." Dr. Ellen Vora is a holistic psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and yoga teacher. She takes a functional medicine approach to mental health—considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root. Dr. Vora received her B.A. from Yale University and her M.D. from Columbia University, and she is board-certified in psychiatry and integrative holistic medicine.
