Today on the podcast, I'm delighted to be speaking to Dr. Lucky Sekhon, or as many of her patients call her, Dr. Lucky. She is a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist at Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York, a large New York City based IVF center. She was born and raised in Toronto, Canada and moved to NYC to complete her OB/GYN residency training. We're going to be talking about genetic testing & fertility, and everything you need to know before trying to conceive. Genetic testing can sound kind of intimidating to people, and it shouldn't be! Genetics play a huge role in our fertility, and like I always say, "the more you know, the better things will go." Dr. Lucky is here to tell us more about it. Dr. Geoffrey Sher is back, and we are talking about Intrauterine Insemination, or IUI. In 1982, Dr. Sher and his colleagues were the first to wash sperm, and then put it through a centrifuge process. After an incubation period, they used a catheter to inject the sperm into the uterine cavity of a patient. He's a true pioneer, and this was the first time IUI had been done!. I know you will enjoy learning more about IUI from him. We're sharing about how IUI works, and why it's recommended for some patients. In my fertility practice, I like to make sure all fertility patients find and build a Health and Wellness TEAM as they look to grow their family. I often tell my patients that we should rename the Trigger Shot, the super unicorn sparkle shot, the egg launcher shot, or the EGG-cellerator shot. On today's Egg Whisperer Show podcast, I'm sharing an interview by MaryJane Carnahan of "The Biggest Ask." She hosted me on Instagram Live, and we talked all about surrogacy. In this interview, we talk about how using a gestational carrier or surrogate has become more common in the last few years and the kinds of patients that should consider using a surrogate. We also discuss how one becomes a gestational carrier, and what the path to becoming one looks like, and how to work with an agency if you are considering one. And, no conversation about surrogacy would be complete without also sharing the psychological considerations of using a gestational carrier, for both the surrogate and for the intended parents. Because the discussion around fertility and treatment has also become more normalized, the use of a gestational carrier has become more accepted in the last decade as well, which has opened up doors for many hopeful parents. I do this with my patients all the time. There's a lot of truth-telling that goes on in my office, and often myth-busting is necessary to get to the truth. Perhaps you can relate — there are so many headlines and hearsay stories about fertility. Do you struggle to disseminate between what is evidence-based and what is not?
