Whether you're an egg donor now, if you're considering it, or you know someone that is — I'm glad you're here. Young women are donating eggs at the time they are most fertile, often times not realizing the implications of what that means. I've had patients come to me in their 40s without enough healthy eggs of their own to conceive. When they share with me that they themselves donated their young and healthy eggs in their 20s or 30s, but that none are available for them, I feel frustrated and sad for them. Frustrated enough that I'm doing something about it. Freeze & Share is a program that helps young egg donors save some eggs for themselves should they need them, while helping another family conceive when they can't on their own. Suffice to say, I don't want anyone to look back at their egg donation and wish they'd known more. In early 2019, Gina, Jen, and Maya came together as mamas on a mission to transform the landscape of embryo donation. Each of them had a different fertility journey that had a connection to embryo donation, and wanted to make embryo donation better understood, more inclusive, and more accessible. On today's podcast episode, I'm talking about preparing for embryo transfer. I find that it's helpful to think about embryo transfer the same way you might think about having a very special guest over for dinner. What are you going to do if you have a very special person over? You're going to make sure everything is absolutely perfect. When it comes to preparing for an embryo transfer, you want to take the same approach. Your metaphorical home in the house analogy is your uterus. The devastation of doing more tests and finding out that something might be wrong that you have to fix is kind of a pain, but the devastation of going through a transfer that doesn't work is also pretty darn awful. Because I work so hard to help families, if I can do anything to prevent someone from not experiencing the devastation of a negative embryo transfer, I'm going to do everything possible to clean up that house and make sure it's perfect. What I recommend is that people do 3 tests before embryo transfer to make sure your uterus is absolutely perfect prior to your embryo transfer.They are: Hysteroscopy Saline Infusion, Sonogram, and Hysterosalpingogram. IVF is a process that involves creating an embryo in a lab. To help explain the process of creating those embryos, I'm joined today by embryologist, Salu Ribeiro. We're are talking about what happens in the lab, after eggs have been retrieved, what makes a "golden egg," and how fertilization works. We'll explain some of the terms you may hear when you're doing IVF: ICSI (which is Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) and PICSI (which is physiological ICSI, where sperm are first chosen for ICSI). And, we talk about how embryos grow, and what an embryologist looks for in eggs, sperm, and embryos. I love talking to Salu about embryos, and this conversation is a lot of fun! Today on the podcast, I'm talking all about how you can create your own personalized IVF Plan. Have you ever used Google Maps and been redirected midway via a better route? Alternatively, maybe you're proactive in managing traffic and go directly to Waze to get you from point A to point B in the most time effective way? These apps are well-loved and widely used because they remove obstacles out of an otherwise potentially painful process, and they do so with data. I bring the beauty of Google Maps into my fertility care by serving as a personal navigator for every one of my patient's IVF care and talked about it here. We tell these apps where we want to go, they determine our starting point and formulate a plan. It's not a one-size fits-all-route; it is customized and updated in real-time to avoid the proverbial bumps along the way. I would get lost daily without this personalized navigation. Today, I'm so honored to have Kristin McQuaid joining me to talk about a very touching and powerful topic: support for surrogate mothers and intended parents through infant loss. Kristin and her husband, Steve, started a non-profit organization in honor of their daughter, London Quinn, who was born still at 39 weeks in July, 2021. They named the organization "London is the Reason," and the non-profit focuses on supporting surrogates and their intended parents through infant loss. I feel quite privileged to have Kristin share her story, and the story of her daughter London with us. I know you will be moved by what she shares. We will be talking about her diagnosis of stage four endometriosis, how she learned about surrogacy, and how she, her husband and their gestational carrier navigated through the loss of London last year.
