Episode 359 - The 2023 Telluride Film Festival, Venice Begins & Final TIFF Preview

For Episode 359, I am joined by Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, and guest Jorge Don Birnam. As per tradition, Jorge and I recorded our conversations on our way to the Telluride Film Festival in the car and coming home from the festival. In between our conversations about the lineup and the Oscar contenders that emerged from the Labor Day weekend festival, I connected with Josh Parham at the Venice International Film Festival to tell me what his experience has been like and also with Dan Bayer, who told me what he's looking forward to at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. Apologies for the audio quality, as I did not have my regular set up for any of these conversations, but I hope you enjoy them either way. Thank you all for your continued support (which you can also share by donating to the Entertainment Community Fund for SAG & WGA members here), and enjoy!Check out more on NextBestPicture.comFor more about Regal Unlimited - https://regmovies.onelink.me/4207629222/937isfrgNew subscribers can use code REGALNBP23 for 10% off of Regal Unlimited for the first 3 monthsPlease subscribe on...SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/nextbestpicturepodcastApple Podcasts - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/negs-best-film-podcast/id1087678387?mt=2Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7IMIzpYehTqeUa1d9EC4jTYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWA7KiotcWmHiYYy6wJqwOwAnd be sure to help support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month at https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Learn more about your ad choices. "The Equalizer 3"

For this week's main podcast review, I was joined by Dan Bayer just a day before I left for the Telluride Film Festival to record so we would have something for you all to listen to today. We're reviewing the latest film from filmmaker Antoine Fuqua, "The Equalizer 3," starring Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, David Denman, Sonia Ammar & Remo Girone. The third and final film in Fuqua and Washington's violent, action-packed justice trilogy loosely based on the television show of the same name, the third outing finds Robert McCall trying to enjoy his retirement in Italy when trouble comes knocking on his door yet again. What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss the violence, action, performance from Denzel Washington, and more in our review. Thank you, and enjoy!Check out more on NextBestPicture.comFor more about Regal Unlimited - https://regmovies.onelink.me/4207629222/937isfrgNew subscribers can use code REGALNBP23 for 10% off of Regal Unlimited for the first 3 monthsPlease subscribe on...SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/nextbestpicturepodcastApple Podcasts - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/negs-best-film-podcast/id1087678387?mt=2Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7IMIzpYehTqeUa1d9EC4jTYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWA7KiotcWmHiYYy6wJqwOwAnd be sure to help support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month at https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Learn more about your ad choices. "Bottoms"

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Nadia Dalimonte, Lauren Cohen, Dan Bayer & Will Mavity. Today, we're discussing the latest film from filmmaker Emma Seligman, "Bottoms," starring Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebiri, Ruby Cruz, Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber, Nicholas Galitzine, Miles Fowler, Marshawn Lynch, Dagmara Dominiczyk & Punkie Johnson. Co-written alongside Rachel Sennott, the "Shiva Baby" pair reunite for this female-driven high school sex comedy that combines "Mean Girls" with "Fight Club" to form a hilarious, violent, and memorable film that will likely gain cult status in a short period of time. What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss the writing, performances, direction, humor, and more in our review. Interview With "Scrapper" Director/Writer Charlotte Regan

"Scrapper" had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it received positive reviews for its writing, direction, performances, and chemistry between the two leads, Harris Dickinson and newcomer Lola Campbell, and won the World Dramatic Prize. Director/Writer Charlotte Regan was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about her work on the film. Please take a moment to listen to the interview and check out the film, which is now playing at the IFC theater in NY and will open in LA on September 8th at The Nuart from Kino Lorber. "Hugo"

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPictureOur 2011 retrospective is almost at an end. Our second to last review is Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" based on Brian Selznick's 2007 book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," starring Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, Chloë Grace Moretz, Ray Winstone, Emily Mortimer & Jude Law. The movie found unexpected ways to pay homage to cinema's past while incorporating 3D technology from cinema's present to give audiences a cinematic experience, unlike anything they had seen before from Scorsese until that point in his career. How does this family film aimed at children and adults hold up today? Take a trip to the moon with Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, Daniel Howat, Will Mavity, and me as we discuss the film's story, themes, performances, crafts, awards season run, and more in our review. Thank you for all your support, and enjoy! Also, be sure to check out our other 2011 retrospective reviews for "War Horse," "The Help," "The Iron Lady," "Midnight In Paris," "The Tree Of Life," "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," "Moneyball," "The Descendants" & "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo."Check out more on NextBestPicture.comFor more about Regal Unlimited - https://regmovies.onelink.me/4207629222/937isfrgNew subscribers can use code BACK2REG23 for 10% off of Regal Unlimited for the first 3 monthsPlease subscribe on...SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/nextbestpicturepodcastApple Podcasts - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/negs-best-film-podcast/id1087678387?mt=2Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/7IMIzpYehTqeUa1d9EC4jTYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWA7KiotcWmHiYYy6wJqwOwAnd be sure to help support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month at https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Learn more about your ad choices. A Behind The Scenes Look At "Bottoms"

"Bottoms" had its world premiere at the South By Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival earlier this year and received positive reviews for its outrageous premise, raunchy humor, unpredictability, and chemistry between the film's stars, Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri. Following the success of "Shiva Baby," Emma Seligman's second directed feature film expands upon her first in nearly every conceivable way while retaining her unique voice and giving rise to women's stories in unexpected genres and situations. Seligman was kind enough to spend some time talking with Ema Sasic, while Stunt Coordinator Devon McNair and Cinematographer Maria Rusche spoke with Dan Bayer about their involvement in making the film. Please take a moment to listen to the interviews and check out the film, which is opening in limited release this weekend from Orion Pictures before expanding next weekend. Interview With "House Of The Dragon" Cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt

"House Of The Dragon" is one of television's most visually lush films today. Carrying over the same visual style of "Game Of Thrones" while allowing for subtle differences from each new DP who works on the series, the show has amassed acclaim for its highly cinematic look and overall quality. Catherine Goldschmidt was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (One Hour) for her work on Episode 8 of Season 1, "The Lord Of The Tides" (and also received a nomination from the American Society Of Cinematographers for the same episode) and was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work on the episode after she received her first Emmy nomination. Please take a listen and be sure to check out the show, which is now streaming on Max and has been nominated for nine Emmy awards.
