Porter and Carlie Ellett: The Kansas City Chiefs' Left-Hand Man and How God Led Him to a Super Bowl
When Porter Ellett was 4 years old, he fell off the back of a truck and lost the use of his arm. Then as a teenager, he decided to have that arm amputated. Today, he is known around the NFL as "Lefty," a nickname given to him after Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid began calling Porter his "left-hand man." On this week's episode, Porter and his wife, Carlie, share the story of why Porter has never let having one arm stop him from achieving his dreams—and how God paved the way for him to do represent something far more meaningful than football on the sport's biggest stage. "I believe what he does is super important, not the X's and O's and the winning of games, but professional football doesn't showcase a lot of people who are different. There's not a lot of people with disabilities at the professional sports level because it's the greatest in the world and so to have any sort of perceived weakness isn't going to be on your side. Having Porter on the football field and coaching I knew was so important for an entire community who doesn't get represented in professional sports." 02:38- Lifetime Chiefs Fan or No? 3:50- The Accident and Amputation 7:19- Adapting 9:18- What They See When They Stare 13:14- The New Era 18:04- A Dreamer and a Planner 23:38- A Call From Andy Reid 29:56- A Team At Home 40:30- Lessons from Coach Reid 48:14- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Elliott Smith: Cultivating a Fear-Free Worship Experience
Attending church for the first time. Coming back to church after a period of inactivity. Going through the temple for the first time. Seeking to develop a love for the temple. These are all experiences that can feel daunting or overwhelming. But years ago, a bishop who had been through a period of inactivity himself sought to create what he called "a fear-free worship experience" for everyone in his congregation—and Elliott Smith says it made all the difference in their ward. So wherever you are on your journey along the covenant path, we invite you to consider how we can best help one another along by also seeking to eliminate fear in our own congregations. 6:08- Fear Free Worship 12:17- Preparing For Baptism 17:10- First Impression of the Temple and Appropriate Expectations 33:58- 4 Ps 41:48- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Melaney Tagg: Kindness Begins With Me
There is an old Primary song that says, "I want to be kind to everyone, for that is right, you see. So I say to myself, 'Remember this: Kindness begins with me.'" Melaney Tagg, our guest on this week's episode, is a living example of what this Primary song looks like in action. When she observed the contention running rampant in her county's school board meetings, Tagg knew she couldn't stand idly by—she had to, as President Oaks put it, "seek to moderate and unify," knowing that kindness needed to begin with her. 3:04- Loudoun County, Virginia 7:38- Credentials 9:06- Breaking the Ice 11:16- Two Commandments 15:50- Venn Diagrams 20:04- Common Pitfalls 25:04- Absolute Truth 29:11- Coming to the Table 33:53- Love Thy Neighbor 36:50- IRL 40:37- Spiritual Momentum 43:15- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Roger Connors: Understanding God's Patterns
As a former mission president and former MTC branch president who currently serves in a YSA stake presidency, Roger Connors has heard from a lot of young people who feel like God just isn't keeping His end of the deal. It is for these people that Connors set out to write his new book, "Divine Patterns." It is his belief that as we observe the way that our unchanging God has worked in the lives of men and women throughout history, we can more easily recognize that He is with us every minute of every day. 2:50- "There Is Something Else" 5:41- Hearing the Plan 7:12- The Care and Concern of the Lord 11:20- Patterns 12:50- Patience is a Choice 16:33- The Lord Loves Effort 20:20- The Savior's Obedience 23:36- What You Want or Something Better 26:06- The Whole Picture 29:13- He Is For Us 39:02- Not a Checklist 44:00- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Carlos Martins: Billionaire Turned Humanitarian Missionary
After making a fortune from the English language schools he created in Brazil, Carlos Martins and his wife, Vania, turned their attention to serving the Lord and their family. In hopes of helping their son achieve his dream of serving a full-time mission, they served a humanitarian mission on the border of Venezuela. By the Martins' count, they were able to help 20,000 refugees relocate. On this week's episode, Martins discusses how the English schools came to be, and how he came to see that concern for his son was only a means to an end for the Lord. "If we allow the Lord to guide our path, and we give up our own plan, in order to believe His miracles, unpredictable miracles of multiplication, will happen in our everyday life." https://deseretbook.com/p/176264?variant_id=200328-ebook Carlos speaks at BYU- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nduEUAnTGQ https://www.forbes.com/sites/ricardogeromel/2014/01/14/meet-the-wizard-who-became-a-billionaire-teaching-english-to-brazilians/?sh=d7127dd5c384 https://www.deseret.com/faith/2022/3/2/22956971/the-wizard-of-hope-carlos-martins-brazil-billionaires-refugee-crisis 3:04- A Wife's Insistence 6:03- Back to Brazil 9:18- The Wizard School 14:07- Pass Along Cards 20:20- A Different Plan 29:18- The Love of Parents and the Reality of God 42:40- Calling in a Favor 47:34- Why Help Refugees? 47:41- How To Help 48:13- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Steven Harper: Is Consecration Still A Thing?
Most of us have the same perception of consecration that Steven Harper had when he went to the temple for the first time: The Lord "revealed the law of consecration to the early Saints. They couldn't live it, so the Lord revoked the higher law, gave the lower law of tithing, and would someday give the higher law again." But if someone had asked him how he knew that, he says he wouldn't have had an answer. Now after studying the topic for years, Harper has a different understanding of what consecration is and on this week's episode he shares the answers he's found with us. 2:18- "A Foreign Place" 6:10- Preparing For The Temple 11:14- A Three-Legged Stool 20:15- The Oversimplification of History 23:50- Edward Partridge 30:30- Caring for the Poor 38:52- Consecration In All Seasons 45:08- Membership Mindset Vs. That is not the measurement but He does ask for all—all their heart, all their might, all their mind, all their strength, all their soul. But in return for that, remember that He gives all." Alissa Parker: Finding Emilie
December 14, 2012, is remembered by many as the day of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. But Alissa Parker remembers it as the day she lost her daughter, Emilie. In the nine and a half years since, Alissa has found solace in the kindness of others and in the goodness of a God who has allowed her to feel her daughter's presence time and time again. Kenneth Hartvigsen: Experiencing Art in an Intimate Way
Kenneth Hartvigsen has thought a lot about the power art possesses. He is a believer that it has the ability to help us unite, understand one another, and feel a greater connection to the Creator. On this week's episode, Kenneth, an art curator at Brigham Young University, takes us inside his thought process surrounding art so we can "experience" one of Carl Bloch's most famous paintings, "Christ Healing the Sick at the Pool of Bethesda." 1:56- "Something To Feel" 5:06- The Great Unifier 8:11- An Embodied Experience 14:43- The Church's Commitment To Art 18:29- Seeking To Understand 26:56- Back To Bethesda 37:07- Art and Empathy 42:39- Sacred Even When Not Religious 46:29- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ? "Looking at art of any subject can be sacred in the sense that what I am looking at is somebody else's deep desire to better understand what they're doing here and to respond to things they've experienced—things that have been exciting for them, things that have been sad for them, things that they're confused about or things they deeply believe but in any of those cases I feel like it's an opportunity to sort of look into the eyes of a fellow traveler here in this complicated part of our existence and to try to see their spiritual progress."
