Throughout 1 Corinthians Paul inserts words and sentences from his critics. He then responds to their ideas. In 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 he inserts a final quote from the legalists. They justified their views by saying "as the law says." This was the Jewish oral law not the Law! Therefore we should put quotation marks around verses 34-35. By not doing so we allow people to think Paul is advancing these ideas which are contradictory to the freedom in Christ he taught elsewhere! But some people have said this was a reference to Genesis 3:16. Here at the Tru316 Foundation we have shown that there are no such ideas in God's words to the woman. Paul clearly identifies the group at the source of these ideas. He refers to four identifiers. Did you know we will judge angels? We will! See 1 Corinthians 6.Paul's point in 1 Corinthians 11:10 is that since we are fit to judge the angels we are also fit to put into practice what he recommends in the first part of 1 Corinthians 11:10. Don't forget to start the passage at verse 2. Paul is praising the women and men in the church at Corinth for practicing what he preached! He quoted the hypocritical legalists in verses 4-6. Then he appealed to the Jewish believers in the church based on Genesis 1-2. We ALL are made in God's image.Then he appeals to Gentile sensibilities in verses 13-15. Points in the Jewish oral law is refuted by Paul in this passage. Neither men nor women should cover their heads is the upshot of Paul's teaching. Jesus corrected wrong ideas in The Sermon on the Mount. Paul is similarly doing so here. Why so much turning in circles? Why so much confusion and disputing on what Paul wrote to Timothy? I believe it is because people have missed Paul's three-part passage in 1 Timothy 1:18-3:16. THIS IS IMPORTANT. It helps make clear that in 1 Timothy 2:11-12 Paul refers the subgroup of wayward women overseers in Ephesus."In every place" in 1 Timothy 2:8 is the start of Section 3 where Paul first refers to the wayward overseers who were disrupting the church.
