The HEAD/BODY METAPHOR in Ephesians 5:15-6:9 is often misunderstood. People mistakenly think and teach something about military hierarchy when this passage is NOT about that! Most people miss the COMPLETELY NEW MEANING FOR "SUBMISSION" Paul puts together in Ephesians 5:21 and uses immediately after in 5:22-24. He changes the worldly vertical meaning with someone UNDER submitting to someone OVER to a Spirit-filled Christian reciprocating horizontal relationship of building up one another and submitting to that building up from another! Go deeper! Have you seen the literary patterns that speak to us in Ephesians 5:15-6:9? They prevent us from taking these verses out of context.Paul teaches that believers are to be mutually building up one another. They are to teach and correct one another. And they are to submit themselves to what they are receiving fro one another. This is a HORIZONTAL and RECIPROCAL SUBMISSION that is world's away from the vertical submission many people teach about these verses.Christian wives and husbands serve as an excellent example of this functional unity in Christ. These verses are not primarily about marriage. Rather, they illustrate how to be being filled with the Spirit (5:18b). They give us a picture of the unity of the body of Christ that is the central idea of this passage (5:31-32).Go Deeper?
