Only One In The Room
Laura Cathcart Robbins
Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you to think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school, or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

John Ridley Is The Only Oscar Winner Who Didn't Care About Box Office Episode 15
What if all of your life, the one thing you were greatest at, the thing you loved above all else, was the one thing that would require the most courage to pursue? John Ridley, novelist, producer, director and Academy-Award-winning screenwriter was raised in Milwaukee Wisconsin with his parents and two sisters. But rather than follow in the prescriptive footsteps of his physician father or special-education-teacher mother, John set out on his own path toward Hollywood, a road notorious for being full of false promises and pitfalls. But what if one day you'd achieved show businesses HIGHEST honor? Would you throw yourself harder into writing or producing your next Oscar-winning project? Or would you use your newfound clout to open doors for the young people who are following in YOUR footsteps? Maybe even those from the very same neighborhood in which you grew up? Josh Levine Is The Only One Who Grew Up In A Cult Episode 14
Imagine being raised in a cult. Living in an environment where every hour of your life must be accounted for, a world where outsiders are not to be trusted. Where your home suddenly becomes community property. And all at once, your room, your clothes and your toys are no longer yours to claim. Josh Levine, CEO of Rebel Industries and host of the Rebel Radio podcast, was four years old when his parents joined the National Labor Federation in the San Francisco Bay Area. And already Josh understood that leaving would not be an option. And those who insisted were only successful by escaping in the night while the over-crowded apartment of cult members slept. But what if one day you decided you wanted a seemingly normal life? One where, as a teenager you could date or bring friends home after school? Would you too escape during the night like the many who disappeared before you? Or would you stay, choosing the familiar over the gaping maw of the unknown? Areva Martin Is The Only One Who Beat The Odds Episode 13
Imagine being raised in the infamous Carr housing projects of St. Louis. Areva Martin, award -winning attorney, advocate, legal commentator, talk show host and producer, beat the odds stacked against her and graduated with honors from Harvard law school. After marrying one of her classmates, having three beautiful children and founding one of the most prestigious law firms in the country, you might say that Areva Martin had created the "perfect life". But what if one day your seemingly perfect life was disrupted by an alarmingly ambiguous medical diagnosis of your toddler son? Would you use the abundant access and resources at your disposal for your family alone or risk what you've built to become an advocate for families from underserved communities who are dealing with that same confusing and sometimes frightening diagnosis? Dondré Whitfield Is The Only Man In The Room Episode 12
When can you call a man a man? When has he earned that coveted title he's strived for his whole adolescent life? Is it when his bank account has reached a certain number? Or when he's earned the ability to be feared by others in the name of respect? And who are the male role models leading the way if yours has fallen victim to recidivism, spending time in and out of jail? Actor, writer, activist, Dondré Whitfield was raised in Brooklyn by his mother, and as a result, Dondré's life-lessons came from the older boys and men in his neighborhood, a place where male respect was defined by the woman on your arm or the size of the rubber band bank in your pocket. But does this definition make you a man? Or does it stifle your ability to rise to your personal and societal responsibilities? Would you shake it off as nonsense and reject the notion that there is more to being a man than seeing how the world can serve you? Or would you embrace the realization that manhood is more about how you can be of service to the world.
