How China Views Multilateralism: Fu Ying

In our program today, we will be listening to a speech given in early-July by CISS Chairperson Madame Fu Ying at the 9th World Peace Forum’s Plenary of “Revitalizing Global Multilateralism”. She discusses how China views and has practiced multilateralism over the past four decades, emphasizing that the country does not expect it to become a tool to serve the interests of a single party.  The 9th World Peace Forum, themed “International Security Cooperation in the Post-Pandemic Era: Upholding and Practicing Multilateralism”, was organized by Tsinghua University on July 2-4, 2021. Mr. Herman Van Rompuy, former President of the European Council, and Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai, former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, also participated in the plenary.

Should Belt and Road Initiative(BRI) stop financing new coal projects?

A China Forum Expert and associate professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University Law School, Mr. Gu Bin, suggests BRI should set a green example by stopping financing new coal power. He is of the view that banning coal is consistent with China’s pledge of carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060 and the new phase of constructing high-quality, clean and green BRI. If BRI makes coal-free commitments, it may contribute to the Paris Agreement and thus improve its own reputation.
