Where Did Idaho's OB/GYNs Go with Dr. Edward McEachern
Dr. Edward McEachern is a practicing Idaho physician and recently published an article on Idaho’s OB/GYN exodus in JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association). This was an exploratory study that tracked the number of practicing OB/GYNs in the state from the end of 2022 to the end of 2024, noting distinction like if they left the state, where they went, if they retired, if they switched specialties, and more. It was hoped that although Idaho lost many OB/GYNs in 2023 that we clawed back and had a net increase in 2024, but Dr. McEachern found that was not the case. We continued a net decrease in practicing OB/GYNs in the state in 2024 as the population continues to rise. Fire Fighters In Idaho with Rob Shoplock
Rob Shoplock is the president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Idaho and came in to speak on fire service in Idaho today. Fire service and its support has been a large discussion in the state as of late, with some areas growing and thus needing more fire service and residents not wanting to self-elect to increase their taxes. Speaking with Rob helped remind me of what it really is that we ask these members of our community to sacrifice for our safety. Mail-In Ballots & Voting Machines in Idaho with Trent Tripple
Trent Tripple is the Ada County Clerk and came in to speak on the recent national discussion about mail-in ballot voting and voting machines. Idaho does not have voting machines, nor does it have what is classically deemed “mail-in ballot voting.” Idaho does have, upon request, an absentee ballot system whereby a ballot is sent at the request of a registered voter. These are utilized by our armed service members, politicians who are on diplomatic missions, students studying out of the area, senior citizens, and more. Trent’s explanation of how and why we have these systems and the safeguards around them was fantastic.
