4.17.2023 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: Jayland Walker No Charges, AL Sweet 16 Shooting, MO Ralph Paul Yarl Shooting  An Ohio grand jury ruled the eight officers involved in the shooting death of 25-year-old Jayland Walker last summer will not face charges. Protesters in Kansas City, Missouri, filling the streets after a black honor student and talented musician, Ralph Paul Yarl, was shot by a white homeowner as he went to the wrong house to pick up his siblings.  The family's attorney, Ben Crump, will give us an update.  California State senator introduces a bill to help identify and find missing black people.  We will speak with the lawmaker behind the proposed Ebony Alert bill to assist law enforcement agencies in prioritizing missing people in our communities.  In Texas, a black woman is sentenced to prison for voting.  Tomorrow, her case goes before the second Court of Appeals in Fort Worth.  Crystal Mason's attorney will update us on the case and tell us what she hopes to come out of tomorrow's hearing.  We will follow another story out of Texas involving a Texas school district investigating one of its teachers for allegedly making a black student portray an enslaved person during class.  It's Time to Bring the Funk on Roland Martin Unfiltered streaming live on the Black Star Network.  Let's go.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

4.14.2023 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: Man gets 70 yrs for spitting on cops; NC HBCU in trouble; White woman spits on sister, gets whupped The double standard in the American Justice system has been a problem for years.  Still, an egregious case has emerged out of Texas, with a black man charged with a simple misdemeanor convicted to 70 years in prison.  We will speak directly with the man's attorney about how they are trying to correct the outrageous ruling. As Texas serves a black man with injustice, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is trying to get a white man who killed a BLM protestor pardoned.  We will speak with a state representative about what is done to ensure the justice system works for Black Americans. A historically Black college in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been denied tax exemption for 14 of the 24 parcels of land it owns due to not meeting statutory requirements for exemption.  This could leave the college with a $127,000 property tax bill.  The Barber-Scotia College Interim President and the Chair of the board will be there to tell us how the school is trying to appeal the tax-exempt denials to the Board of Equalization and Review. United States Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is facing allegations of corruption after failing to report 20 years of donor gifts and trips.  Elie Mystal, Justice Correspondent for The Nation, will explain the historical significance and why an overhaul of court ethics laws and requirements is needed. Cliff Albright, Co-Founder of Black Voters Matter, will join me live from Tennessee for more details.  In a 136-10 vote, the Texas State House passed House Bill 1, a $302 billion state budget for fiscal years 2024-25 that would provide billions in funding for higher education. However, if the House proposal becomes law, colleges won't be able to use any state money for "the design, implementation, or administration" of DEI practices and programs. We will explain what this means for the future of education with Texas State Representative Jarvis Johnson. Missouri State House of Representatives voted to strip all public libraries of funding a week after lawmakers debated the budget proposal by Governor Mike Parson, which eliminates $4.5 million for libraries, diversity initiatives, childcare, and pre-kindergarten programs. To explain the dire situation, we will speak to Jamie Johnson, Missouri State Representative of House District 12. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed new pollution rules.
