The student pastor is called to be a disciple-maker. Discipleship isn’t just teaching students Bible stories; students need to be continually renewed in the Gospel. Never stop proclaiming Christ in all of life; if we remove the centrality of the Gospel then there’s nothing left to proclaim. The reality of student ministry is that some kids will get it, and others won’t. The heart is the motivational structure of the soul, it determines how people think, feel, and act. The Gospel deconstructs our focus on self, but we continually return to our fleshly nature. Our job as the student pastor is to let the Gospel tear down the focus on self. We often ask other student pastors ‘what are you doing that’s working?’ but at the end of the day, dependency on God will always trump strategy. Our relationship with God is an active one. By God’s grace, we have the joy of being made more into His image. Personal discipleship is our continual growth in following Jesus. The mortification of sin is crucial to our personal discipleship, our walk with the Lord, and those around us. Sin doesn’t just affect the sinner; it affects everything.
