Iran’s Assembly of Experts has elected Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country’s new supreme leader. The younger Khamenei, aged 56, was long considered a contender for the position, even before an Israeli strike killed his father, and despite never being elected or appointed to a government position. Khamenei has not been seen publicly for days, and now stands as the head of Iran's theocracy and will have final say over all matters of state. Iran has — for years — been developing drone technology to share with adversaries of the United States and Israel. And now, Iran’s military is using them for attacks in Israel and countries hosting American troops. The first American deaths in the U.S.-Israel military operation against Iran were in a one-way drone attack in Kuwait. The Russia-Ukraine conflict is considered to be the first real drone war, with both sides using them for attacks on a large scale. Their use in military strikes dates back about 20 years.
