Jim Howard MBA: Tools for Monitoring Fasting/Ketosis

#015-What is the best way to detect ketosis?Ketones and ketosis are everywhere in the news. What are ketone bodies? Why are they good for us? How do we measure them?  Our guest today is Jim Howard, the CEO of biomarker-based startup Readout Health. Their product  Biosense is the first clinical-grade, handheld device that measures nutritional ketosis for chronic disease and longevity/wellness focused consumers. He is a digital health executive with an MBA from University of Missouri-Saint Louis.Take away points:Three Ketone bodies are produced as a by‐product of fat metabolism. When the liver metabolizes free fatty acids,  they are transformed into acetyl‐CoA, a molecule used in the production of energy. Depending on the glucose level, acetyl‐CoA can be diverted to  produce acetoacetate, the first of three ketone bodies.  Acetoacetate can further produce β‐hydroxybutyrate and acetone, by enzymatic degradation or spontaneous decarboxylation respectively. All three ketone bodies circulate in the bloodstream. Acetone, because of its small size, diffuses into the lung and appears in the exhaled breath. The devices we will be discussing detect levels of acetone from this process.Deep lung measurement.Biosense Breath Ketone Monitor -Use the code Lufkin20 for a $20 discount at https://mybiosense.com/*** CONNECT WITH ROBERT LUFKIN MD ON SOCIAL MEDIA ***Web: https://robertlufkinmd.com/ Twitter:https://twitter.com/robertlufkinmd*** GOT A SUGGESTION FOR A SHOW? ***Contact us at: https://robertlufkinmd.com/contact*** SPONSORSHIPS & BRANDS *** We do work with sponsors and brands. Ben Azadi: Keto Flex to Metabolic Health

#014- Today we discuss how a process called Keto-flexing can deliver metabolic health. Our guest is Ben Azadi, FDN-P who is on a mission to help 1 billion people live a healthier lifestyle. Ben is the author of several best-selling books- The Perfect Health Booklet, The Intermittent Fasting Cheat Sheet, The Power of Sleep, and most recently Keto Flex.  Ben is the founder of Keto Kamp. He is the go-to source for intermittent fasting and the ketogenic diet. He is known as ‘The Health Detective’ because he investigates dysfunction, and educates, not medicates, to bring the body back to normal function.  TAKE HOME POINTS:Keto Flexing is a novel approach to ketogenic nutrition which involves ketosis, fasting, and flexible food choices to optimize the health value of this strategy. Ketosis is a normal state in our bodies that we do less and less of because of the American diet, which forces us into the glucose side. So returning to ketosis is not a fad or a particular diet, but it's a way of living. It has health advantages compared to when we burn glucose.  For ketogenic diet we add fats and oils. It is best to avoid seed/vegetable oils. They are [3 C’s] canola oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, [3 S’s] soybean oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, and two others rice bran oil and grapeseed oil. They're very unstable and highly inflammatory. We prefer stable fats, saturated fats, monounsaturated fats such as coconut oil, real olive oil, avocado oil, butter, ghee, duck fat, and lard.  https://www.benazadi.com/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUh_MOM621MvpW_HLtfkLyQhttps://twitter.com/THEBENAZADI https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-azadi-b7122323/ *** CONNECT WITH ROBERT LUFKIN MD ON SOCIAL MEDIA **Web: https://robertlufkinmd.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/robertlufkinmd *** GOT A SUGGESTION FOR A SHOW? ***Contact us at: https://robertlufkinmd.com/contact *** SPONSORSHIPS & BRANDS *** We do work with sponsors and brands. Robert Lufkin MD: An apology to my patients

#013- I’m so sorry! A growing number of physicians have made open apologies for their past recommendations to their patients that encouraged low fat, high carbohydrate meals as a healthy lifestyle choice. I want to also add my sincere apologies to all my patients for the wrong advice that I have given over the years when I recommended a low fat diet and largely ignored the dangers of processed foods, seed oils, grains, and refined carbohydrates. The accumulated evidence is, in my opinion, overwhelmingly in support of the value of a low carbohydrate diet with limited processed foods, seed oils, and grains.  This is also ideally consumed in fairly narrow eating windows in order to decrease inflammation and insulin resistance while, maximizing metabolic flexibility and autophagy. Over the last few years there has been a revolution in our understanding of how major chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, dementia, and cancers are all linked by underlying longevity processes and most importantly that we can actually influence them through the choices we make in our lives and the primary choice that we can start with is correct diet- what we eat, when we eat, and how much we eatThe wonderful thing about science unlike say religion or politics is that with enough evidence we can all accept new ideas, and admit when we were wrong and change for the better. As a result I have made this my primary focus to help bring quality evidence based information about health and longevity to the general public through social media, podcasts, video and other presentations such as this. I hope that you can join me on this exciting journey to transform our health and our lives!!Show *** CONNECT WITH ROBERT LUFKIN MD ON SOCIAL MEDIA **Web: https://robertlufkinmd.com/Twitter:https://twitter.com/robertlufkinmd*** GOT A SUGGESTION FOR A SHOW? ***Contact us at: https://robertlufkinmd.com/contact*** SPONSORSHIPS & BRANDS ***We do work with sponsors and brands. Elizabeth Parrish: Gene Therapy for Longevity

#010-Today we take a look at gene therapy and the possibilities for longevity with someone who is not only an expert in the field but who has also tested the longevity gene therapy on herself. Elizabeth Parrish is an entrepreneur and founder and CEO of Bio-Viva Sciences. She is a graduate of the University of Washington. Preprint: Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) and follistatin (FST). Mouse cytomegalovirus (MCMV) carrying exogenous TERT or FST (MCMVTERT or MCMVFST) extended median lifespan by 41.4% and 32.5%, respectively. First report of CMV being used successfully as both an intranasal and injectable gene therapy system to extend longevity.
