Llewellyn Prain is currently a Board member at Western Water, the Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, the Public Transport Ombudsman, and the Disability Services Board. And she's previously been a Board member of Western Regional Health Centre and CoHealth.She's worked as a lawyer in senior strategy and policy roles and she's run her own business. Her zone of genius is in helping to develop and communicate policy in a range of areas including emergency management, health, and transport.Llewellyn was the first woman to Chair the Board of the Western Region Health Centre. And she helped to lead the merger process that created CoHealth, one of the largest community health organisations in Australia.She completed the Williamson Community Leadership Program in 2017. Llewellyn lost most of her vision in 2014, through a hereditary eye condition. She's passionate about addressing inequity in our community, and ensuring diversity and inclusion in all aspects of life. We also talk about imposter syndrome, her ‘year of yes’ and how it led her to being on the Jane Goodall Institute of Australia Board. Michelle is a results driven, innovative thinker and an experienced team builder. She's skilled in strategy, publicity, stakeholder liaison and team management, business development, event management and brand development across the creative industries commercial and not for profit organizations.She's the Deputy Chair of the Jane Goodall Institute of Australia. And she's done the Foundation of Governance program with the Australian Institute of Company Directors. I first met Michelle when I was engaged by the Jane Goodall Institute to support the recruitment of new board members. I met her when I interviewed her for the board role. Getting clear about intentions in joining a Board with Rachel Lowry - Episode 2
Rachel is the chief Conservation Officer at the World Wildlife Federation, WWF Australia and past president of the International Zoo Educators Association, and former chair of the Centre for Sustainability Leadership. She also currently sits on the Parks Victoria Advisory Committee and the Zoo Wise Advisory Committee.In our discussion, we talk about being an effective board member: what time commitment is required, what support you ned to have in place, what's the balance between governance and operational, what skills you need to have on your board, and also how incredibly rewarding it can be to be a board member.One of the other things that stands out in this discussion is Rachel’s views about engaging with members and networks. She talks about:her first board role, which she gained through reaching out to Larissa Brown, the then CEO of the Centre for Sustainability Leadership.her time as President of the Zoo Educators Association where she surveyed members so that board could determine their strategic direction. Depth and breadth in the boardroom with Sandra Loader - Episode 1
Sandra Loader is the chair of the Australian Beverage Council and a non-executive director of the Sports Environment Alliance and the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology. She's also a member of the Advisory Committee for the New South Wales Government container deposit scheme. She was previously a non-executive director of the Food Industry Association, and innovation start-ups such as the food Technology Centre.Today, Sandra speaks with Helga Svendsen about how her country roots influenced her start in governance. Sandra says that you need to make sure you are aware of the commitment being an active board member can be and from time to time, that courage is a key component of governance and that you need to take stock of your network. She also believes that a key aspect of guiding and mentoring is to give full and frank feedback.
