On today’s episode of Finding Freedom Fergus Hodgson joins John to discuss how COVID lockdowns have impacted higher education and how he sees college and business evolving in the future. Fergus is originally from New Zealand, so naturally he spends some time discussing the lockdowns in his native country. Fergus gives the straight truth of the what’s happening inside New Zealand and it’s not pretty. Fergus Hodgson is an independent economic consultant, previously the editor-in-chief of the PanAm Post and the director of fiscal policy studies with the John Locke Foundation in North Carolina. He holds a BA in economics from Boston University, a graduate diploma in political science from the University of Waikato, New Zealand, and a certificate in Cuban studies from the University of Miami. On today’s episode Kristy Laschober joins the show. Kristy went from having a thriving business as a wardrobe stylist in Southern California to meth addiction and eventually to prison. She was born with a medical condition and this led to her becoming addicted to opioids as a child. After nearly 10 years of sobriety and ending a marriage to a police officer, Kristy relapsed. This change in trajectory led Kristy to trying methamphetamine and eventually selling to a Connecticut priest who the media dubbed “Monsignor Meth”. As a first time offender, she was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison. Kristy did her time in five different facilities including her last two years at the maximum security FMC Carswell in Texas. She was released in 2017 and hit the ground running. She graduated with honors from Southern Oregon University and has become a fierce advocate for prison reform, leading the fight to remove the criminal history box on all college applications in her state and advocating to provide opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals to attend college. On today’s show Coss Marte returns. Coss was on the show way back on Episode 21. Back when Felony Friday was just building an identity. Now he returns as Finding Freedom is just getting started. Coss is the perfect example of how an individual put in the work to find their freedom. At the age of nineteen Coss was making more than $2 million per year selling illegal drugs using an elaborate delivery system. He reinvented how drugs were sold in his neighborhood and became the "Uber of the drug trade" before Uber even existed. At twenty-three Coss was arrested and convicted and spent more than 7 years in prison. During his incarceration Coss transformed his life. He lost 70 lbs in prison and changed his outlook on life. He shares how he went from running boot camps in the park to becoming a wildly successful entrepreneur and owner of a successful fitness company, ConBody. He also shares how he quickly pivoted when the pandemic hit and by doing so expanded his business when most of his competitors were closing down.
