Katarina Johnson-Thompson: TAW Special
Katarina Johnson-Thompson joins The Anfield Wrap to discuss the Nike x LFC Foundation initiative 'Game On', as well as the Olympics & Liverpool FC.
Game On was set up to help youngsters from marginalised communities access more sporting and coaching opportunities, and John Gibbons finds out more.
'Game On will support young people aged seven to 12 from marginalised communities – specifically children from the Black and Asian community, girls and children of all abilities – by providing them with opportunities to become members of local, diverse sports clubs and play a variety of sports, including boxing, tennis, cricket, athletics, basketball, cycling, gymnastics and much more.
'The programme will also involve the creation of a new coaching academy, which will inspire participants to play and coach sports, creating opportunities for a lifelong pathway. The academy will also have a specific focus on recruiting from marginalised communities to help remove any barriers to sport that may exist.
'LFC Foundation will mentor the coaches and provide them with work experience and training opportunities across Liverpool Football Club and through local grassroots clubs.'

Earl Jenkins is a well known name in Liverpool for his work helping youth aspirations through sport. “I’ve wanted to make sure that we use the football in a way that supports these kids, and shows them a path out of the neighbourhood and raises their aspirations,” said Jenkins.
The Anfield Wrap, alongside Nike, have worked with Earl Jenkins and Kingsley United, Merseyside’s most diverse footy team to create a Kingsley United girls’ team, a BAME [Black, Asian, Minority, Ethnic] youth leadership forum in partnership with other organisations in the city, and a bursary scheme for a BAME coaching course.
Kingsley United came about after a merge with Tiber FC where the two clubs realised that would be stronger together. A new astroturf on Lodge Lane is one of the many signs the club is being revitalised. Kingsley Road is now a symbol of what unites the community through football.
Earl Jenkins describes his coaches as mentors “first and foremost.” He goes on to say “in some respects, some of our coaches become that role model or father figure for the kids in the team. And if you look at any of our training sessions, you can see a real sense of community and family as well.”
Find out more about our partnership with Kingsley United and more here.
Also on the show, John Gibbons speaks to Earl Jenkins the chair of Kingsley United, and Josh is joined by Joseph Symes from the It's A Funny Old Life podcast.

Liverpool 2 Southampton 0: The Anfield Wrap
For our free podcast looking at Liverpool 2 Southampton 0, Neil Atkinson hosts Rob Gutmann, Chloe Bloxam and Goal.com's Neil Jones...
Here's what Jonesy had to say in his post-match column: "Leicester beware. Liverpool are still fighting. Despite everything, despite the knocks and the setbacks and the injuries, the Reds are still there.
Somehow.
The race for Champions League qualification goes on. Jurgen Klopp’s side simply had to win here and they did, Sadio Mane’s header and Thiago Alcantara’s first goal in English football giving them a battling 2-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday evening.
With Leicester surprisingly beaten at home by Newcastle 24 hours previously, it means Liverpool have closed to within six points of the fourth-placed Foxes with a game in hand.
And Leicester’s final three fixtures, in case you had forgotten, are away to Manchester United, away to Chelsea and at home to Tottenham. Ouch.
Liverpool will surely, at the very least, need to win all four of their remaining games, starting at Old Trafford on Thursday. They have not won there under Klopp, of course, but this would be an ideal time to alter that.
They need to get to 69 points, by hook or by crook. It is the only chance they have."

To reflect on all of that and discuss what is next for the city as COVID restrictions continue to ease, John speaks to Claire McColgan, the Director of Culture Liverpool; Matt Ashton, the Director of Public Health; and DJ Lauren Lo Sung who was the first performer at the event on the Friday.
