Palestine Deep Dive

We're live for a vital DeepDive focusing on the impact of Israel's latest bombardment of Gaza, as well as the 15 years of siege and destruction it has imposed, on Palestinian children in particular. At least 45 Palestinians have been killed, including 16 children, in Israel's latest aggression on Gaza. Half of Gaza's two million population are children, living under siege in one of the world's most densely populated places. Hosted by Ahmed Alnaouq, a Palestinian journalist from Gaza whose story was the inspiration behind the formation of We Are Not Numbers, we're live with: Dr. Yasser Abu Jamei – Director of the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme Hind Wihaidi – A 17-year-old Palestinian musician and writer living in Gaza. Rana Shubair – Palestinian author of two books, "My lover is a Freedom Righter", and "In Gaza, I Dare to Dream". Rana is also a mother of three children. 

We're live with Francesca Albanese, the new United Nations Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territory (oPt). Mark Seddon hears just what such a role entails at the UN and what powers are granted to it. We also hear the latest on ongoing cases including the search for justice for the incarcerated Ahmad Manasra, the latest on the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh as well as hearing the international legal perspective on Israel's ongoing colonisation of Masafer Yatta.

In the early 1980s the IDF declared the area a firing zone (“Firing Zone 918”), an action viewed by experts as a violation of international law and one clearly undertaken with the objective of forcibly displacing the Palestinian residents of the area to take control of the land. Last month, the Israeli Supreme Court rejected the residents' claims to the land in favour of the military, declaring the region a closed-off training area following the two-decade legal battle.  Residents fear expulsion and are already at the mercy of Israeli home demolitions and property confiscations while also facing regular harassment and violence from both the Israeli army and Israeli settlers. We’re live with Basil Al-Adraa, a local resident, activist & journalist, and Yuval Abraham, a Jerusalem-based journalist and activist.

Together they will be picking apart the Western media's coverage, or lack of it, on the realities Palestinians face on the ground under Israel's occupation. Tune in as they shine a light on the journalistic double standards of major Western outlets seen in the reporting of recent events, such as the killing of the iconic Palestinian journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, by Israeli forces last month.

Deep Dive’s host, Mark Seddon, is joined in the studio by the book’s co-editor Dr. Ramzy Baroud and one of its many Palestinian contributors, Dr. Ghada Karmi, also joined via video link is co-editor Prof. Ilan Pappé. Dr. Ramzy Baroud is a US-Palestinian journalist, media consultant, an author, internationally-syndicated columnist, Editor of Palestine Chronicle (1999-present), former Managing Editor of London-based Middle East Eye, former Editor-in-Chief of The Brunei Times and former Deputy Managing Editor of Al Jazeera online. Prof. Ilan Pappé is a distinguished Israeli historian and socialist activist. He is a professor with the College of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of Exeter, director of the university's European Centre for Palestine Studies, and co-director of the Exeter Centre for Ethno-Political Studies. Dr. Ghada Karmi is a leading Palestinian activist, academic and author of three books, the most recent of which is Return: A Palestinian Memoir (2015). Dr. Karmi has practiced as a doctor of medicine, served as vice chair of the Council for Arab-British Understanding (Caabu) and was a research a fellow at the Institute of Arab and Islamic studies at the University of Exeter.
