#259 Leading Complex and Adaptive Change with Dr Minal Bakhai MBE

In the lead up to Best Practice 2023 which takes place in Birmingham on 11 and 12 October, Tara will be interviewing a number of keynote speakers, session chairs, panellists, and featured guests to really whet your appetite ahead of the show. Our aim is to not only get the lowdown on their roles and the work they are doing but to also dig deeper and learn more about them as people; their personal motivations, interests, where they have faced challenges, their learned experiences, and their own examples of best practice. We kick off our series with an episode featuring NHS England's Director of Primary Care Transformation, NICE Expert Adviser, and northwest London-based GP Dr Minal Bakhai. This episode really sets the scene in terms of what to expect from our series as this is not in any way a policy-led conversation. You can expect to learn more about: ➡️ What life is really like as a healthcare senior leader, both professionally and personally ➡️ How Minal views her NHS England role and where she feels her priorities and challenges lie ➡️ Minal's take on where Primary Care is at right now ➡️ Balancing time, momentum, and maintaining success ➡️ And of course Tara touches on the Primary Care Recovery Plan… Best Practice To register your place at Best Practice 2023 click here Gob for Good To register your #gobforgood and to join the stem cell registry - please click here to head straight to the website - you could become a life saver and help make a difference. #257 Assume Positive Intent with Vincent Sai

In this episode, Tara talks to Vincent Sai, CEO of Modality, a GP super partnership. For practices which are not part of a super partnership, there can sometimes be the perception that the partnership is all about money. Following discussions with Vincent (and other Modality colleagues) we now know that, whilst the finances are an important factor, Primary Care professionals choose their vocation because it matters. They have decided to serve their communities, not to become millionaires or billionaires. The Modality group comprises of 135 partners and Vincent was keen to emphasise that they are a partnership and not a dictatorship. No one size fits all and their company's motivation for growth is neither predatory, nor aggressive; they are driven simply by a desire to work at scale, through word of mouth. We also covered: The topic of work-life balance, which is a question usually reserved for women. Vincent has 4 children and is married. Vincent's strengths and weakness. The role of automation and bots within Modality. The future of Primary Care, and the partnership model. Vincent's key piece of advice (applicable to anyone, in any industry). And if you are unsure about what a super GP partnership is... A super partnership is formed when several practices merge to form one entity, comprising of several operating practices spread out across an area. This can be done by merging all practices together in their entirety, leaving the organisation operating as one large traditional partnership or LLP. To learn more about the Modality Group, please visit: https://www.modalitypartnership.nhs.uk. If you have any questions for Vincent, please email him at: vincent.sai@nhs.net. #255 How to build legitimacy and enhance your creditability

This week on The Business of Healthcare Podcast I am discussing how to build legitimacy and enhance your creditability. Having a boundary spanning role and building legitimacy go hand in hand. It can feel like you are constantly trying to build legitimacy and when you join a new organisation – you have to start from scratch and you have to show who you are and share your values. Other people can build your legitimacy by word of mouth testimonial / referral and this is really important, but you still have to live up to this expectation. Do this by trying to get to know people, make it personal and make it not all about you but showcase your experience. Points that are discussed Offer your help with no expectation Quietly putting out fires in the background that other people don't know that is there. See the light at the end of the tunnel It's hard but so rewarding Reflect on those little successes You need to understand the context you work within – please take a listen to my episode 171 Understanding the context you work within by clicking here to explore this further The most practical piece of advice I can offer is, be visible do what you say you are going to do and make the time to genuinely get to know people and be yourself.
