Louisa Ziane // Co-founder of Toast Ale

In episode 56 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Louisa Ziane, Co-founder of Toast Ale on creating beer from food waste and building sustainable collaborations with breweries around the world. With its signature beer made from surplus bread, Toast Ale is at the forefront of the fight against food waste, and the movement to make the food industry more sustainable. “Food production is responsible for 80% of deforestation, 70% of freshwater use, 30% of greenhouse gas emissions and is the largest contributor to soil erosion and biodiversity loss. Yet one-third of food goes to waste. We’re here to change that,” shares Co-Founder and COO Louisa Ziane, who worked as a sustainability consultant before teaming up with Stuart to create Toast Ale. In the brewing process, Toast replaces one-third of the malted barley with bread. The bread provides starches that are broken down to fermentable sugars by enzymes contained in the malt. The yeast feeds on the sugars during fermentation to create alcohol. Malt accounts for a significant part of the beer production carbon footprint. By replacing virgin barley with surplus bread, Toast reduces the need for land and water use in its production processes, thereby mitigating carbon emissions leading to climate change. The social enterprise uses the heel ends of loaves that can’t be made into sandwiches. They source simple white, brown or whole-meal sliced bread that has easily accessible sugars, and is widely available.Listen to more Causeartist podcasts here.Check out:ImpactInvestor.io - Discover impact investors from around the world.Podcast Made with TransistorPodcast cover design Made with CanvaBuild amazing web platforms with Webflow ----------------------------------------Disruptors for GOOD is powered by Causeartist, a nonprofit media company dedicated to bridging the gap between capital and culture by spotlighting founders, investors, and organizations reimagining how business can serve people and the planet.Through storytelling, events, and open-access education, Causeartist helps create a shared language of impact, inspiring more founders to build with purpose and more funders to invest with intention.By amplifying ideas and innovations across industries, Causeartist transforms awareness into action and cultivates a community where paying it forward is part of the foundation for growth.

Matt Hill // Founder of One Tree Planted

In episode 54 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Matt Hill, founder of the global organization One Tree Planted on using trees to revitalize our planet and create jobs around the world.Matt Hill is the CEO and Founder of One Tree Planted, a reforestation nonprofit that was started in 2014. The company’s mission is to make it simple for people to give back to the environment. As a father and nature-lover, Matt wants to make sure future generations can enjoy the great outdoors. One Tree Planted is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on a mission to make it simple for anyone to help the environment by planting trees. Their reforestation projects span the globe and are done in partnership with local communities and knowledgeable experts to create an impact for nature, people, and wildlife. Each project focus is different, and can include forest fire restoration, agroforestry, watershed health, biodiversity, climate, and social impact. Many projects have overlapping objectives, creating a combination of benefits that contribute to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The nonprofit will plant one million trees in Bushfire Recovery Nurseries in Australia. One Tree Planted is teaming up with the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife on this effort that is significantly important given Australia experienced devastating fires at the end of 2019 through to 2020 which burnt 21% of temperate broadleaf and mixed forests. During an average bushfire season, only 2% is burned. One Tree Planted is also teaming up with Sustainable Green Initiative to plant 500,000 fruit trees in India. Food scarcity across India has been amplified by the effects of COVID-19. Planting trees in the homesteads, communities, and villages will help keep hunger at bay. Over time, it will create sustainable livelihoods for small farmers, changing lives and strengthening local economies. The species they will focus on are: moringa, papaya, banana, lemon, guava, apricot, pear, peach, and jujubes. Andy Rieger // Co-Founder of J.Rieger & Co Distillery

In episode 50 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Andy Rieger, the Co-founder and President of J.Rieger & Co Distillery on navigating the pandemic and turning their 50,000 sqf HQ into a full-time hand sanitizer production facility. It all started in Kansas city during 1887, only to meet an early demise in 1919 with the onset of the 18th Amendment and Federal Prohibition. 95 years later, two ambitious young KC guys refused to let Prohibition be the final fate for J. Rieger & Co.‍In 2012 Andy Rieger, Jacob Rieger’s great-great-great grandson (and only living direct descendent at the time), and Ryan Maybee, a career bartender and restaurateur set out to resurrect this historic brand. Together they formed a bond based on their shared vision of re-establishing not only Andy’s family legacy, but also reviving the distilling industry in Kansas City. And in 2014, they relaunched J. Rieger & Co., Kansas City’s first distillery since Prohibition with the release of “Rieger’s Kansas City Whiskey”, a unique style of American Whiskey that pays tribute to J. Rieger & Co.’s history.‍About a month ago the distillery made a decision to fully commit its resources and time to producing, at scale, hand sanitizer for the Kansas City consumers, hospitals and overall community. Since making the decision the company has produced and distributed over 110,000 individual bottles of hand sanitizer, that’s almost 36,000 gallons!Personally, I am proud to be part of their efforts through a project I am involved with at Emoji My City, where we've created a Support KC Apparel Collection to support the service industry and its workers here in Kansas City. J. Rieger & Co has agreed to match all funds donated as well as distribute the product to those who qualify and sign up.Sanitizer will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis and recipients will receive pickup instructions on April 25 if available. Pick-ups will occur on April 28-29 at the J. Rieger & Co. Distillery in Kansas City, Missouri. Not an essential worker but looking to help?
