Why China Wants You to Drive an EV
China’s economy is struggling: Many young people can't find jobs, the nation’s real estate market is in trouble after two major property development companies failed, and China's stock market has seen a $7 trillion decline in just a few years. But Beijing has a plan to do something about it.When the “green energy” movement began, China recognized an opportunity, Erin Walsh explains. Beijing saw an “opening because they don't have oil, so they had to come up with something else,” said Walsh, senior research fellow for international affairs in the Asian Studies Center at The Heritage Foundation. “Because, how do you electrify and grow, and become No. 1 in the world, which is their goal; how do you do that if you don't have energy,” she asked. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) China has “hijacked the agenda” of the green movement, because the Asian giant is on the forefront of developing electric vehicles, batteries and solar energy, according to Walsh. Walsh joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the factors that have led to China’s economic challenges and how Beijing is seeking to overcome its economic woes by further dominating the energy market. Texas vs. Biden: Lone Star State’s Battle to Secure the Border
When it became increasingly clear that the federal government was not going to stop the flow of illegal aliens across the border, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began taking strategic action. “You look at the results, and they speak for themselves,” Brent Smith says of what Abbott has done to slow the flood of illegal crossings. Smith serves as the county attorney for Kinney County, Texas, which borders Mexico and is about 130 miles west of San Antonio. Because of the enormous influx of illegal aliens crossing the border, Smith says, “Everything has changed” in his community. “People now, when you hear a helicopter flying in the air, kids know to run home,” Smith said. “And if you hear sirens, 99% of the time, it has to do with illegal immigration.”Even schools have "military barriers around them" to prevent smugglers from driving through the campus, he added. The county attorney also said his workload has multiplied many times over as frequent arrests of illegal aliens are made in the county. According to Smith, “preventing the entry, repelling them at the river” is the way to address the crisis. That's what Abbott has done in Eagle Pass, Texas, at Shelby Park. Under Abbott’s leadership, the Texas National Guard is preventing the Border Patrol from processing illegal aliens in Shelby Park, which is on the Rio Grande and which served as a popular crossing point until Texas assumed control of it. The Texas National Guard has laid concertina wire fencing along the riverbank and built a 4,500-foot border wall using shipping containers topped with sharp razor wire to repel illegal crossings. Because crossings into Shelby Park have fallen to almost none, Smith says, Abbott will likely “expand the tactic that he's using in Shelby Park to other places.” Meanwhile, the Biden administration has been critical of Abbott’s recent tactics and has previously taken legal action against the governor's efforts to secure the border. Smith joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the ongoing legal tensions between Texas and the federal government, and what could be next as the border crisis continues to unfold. Enjoy the show! ‘The Chosen’ Actors on Joys and Challenges of Portraying Biblical Characters
The Bible provides readers with glimpses into the personalities of Jesus' Twelve Apostles, but little is know about the details of their lives. That can be both a challenge and creative opportunity for the actors and writers on the set of the hit series “The Chosen.” “We know he's known as ‘Doubting Thomas,’” says Joey Vahedi, the actor who plays Thomas on the multiseason series. But the question that Vahedi says he has the opportunity to answer is “why is [Thomas] that person?” The writers of the show, Vahedi says, “take such great liberty with bringing this human perspective to all the characters, because we got to remember they're not saints yet.” The character of Thomas is significantly developed in the first three episodes of season four of “The Chosen,” which are in theaters now. Season four picks up right where season three left off, and “I think you get to see a much, much sweeter and kinder side to Thomas,” Vahedi says. “He's out of his shell, finally feels comfortable. He's ready. And on the flip side of that, Jesus' message is getting so much more radical, to the point where it is dangerous for everybody now.”Even outside of the Apostles, the latest season of “The Chosen” shows how the message of Jesus is affecting everyone who hears it. Kirk B. Woller, who plays the role of the Roman soldier Gaius, says his character is “toying with” the message he's hearing Jesus speak. “There's just great responsibility to me in all of this” to portray his character accurately, Woller said.Woller and Vahedi join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share their own stories of how they became a part of “The Chosen” cast, and the hardest and most rewarding parts of playing their roles as they develop further in the new season. Rep. Mark Green: What's Next After House Impeached Mayorkas
The House on Tuesday voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, but the Democrat-controlled Senate is not expected to vote to remove him from office. “There isn't a whole lot of power we have,” Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said of House members’ ability to push the Senate to hold a trial to consider ousting the homeland security chief. With the two articles of impeachment now in the hands of the Senate, Green explained, Senate Majority Leader “Chuck Schumer and his guys can … either not hear it at all, they can have us come over and be referred to a committee and it's heard then in a committee and dies in a committee, or they can have us present to the entire Senate.” Green and his colleagues who backed the impeachment are “going to get loud,” the Tennessee lawmaker said. “We're going to get really loud. They're going to pay for it if they don't do something,” Green said of the Senate, “because the American people are with us on this.” Green joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what the House Homeland Security Committee uncovered during its nearly yearlong investigation into Mayorkas that culminated in the secretary's impeachment.
