Michael Barone: Understanding the Founding Fathers’ ‘Mental Maps’
The places where they were raised and to which they traveled formed the Founding Fathers’ geographic orientation, which influenced their view of the nation and what the country could become, according to Michael Barone. While George Washington had “a map that goes north by northwest,” Thomas Jefferson “saw the country from [the] perspective of the West,” says Barone, a senior political analyst for The Washington Examiner and a co-author of The Almanac of American Politics since its first edition in 1972. In his new book, “Mental Maps of the Founders: How Geographic Imagination Guided America's Revolutionary Leaders,” Barone explains how the differing “mental maps” of Founders such as Washington, Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton were sometimes in opposition, but together formed our great nation. Barone joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the little-known facts about the Founding Fathers he uncovered while researching the new book. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers: Time for Senate to Pass TikTok Bill
There is a rare bipartisan agreement in Washington D.C. around the social media app TikTok. The app’s parent company, ByteDance, is headquartered in Beijing and is subject to Chinese law that requires companies to make their users’ data available to the Chinese Communist Party. In March, the House passed a bill in a 352-65 vote, with the help of 197 Republicans and 155 Democrats, that gives TikTok a choice: either break from ByteDance or cease to operate in the U.S.Biden says he will sign the bill if it land on his desk, so that just leaves the Senate. “I'm hopeful that the Senate will act swiftly,” Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., says. “I believe that it is important that they do to address this immediate threat and get this on the president's desk. This legislation is our best chance to end the Chinese Communist Party's abuse of these apps that are targeting, surveilling, and manipulating Americans.” McMorris Rodgers, who also serves as chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain where the bill stands and why TikTok poses a threat to national security interests. Climate Expert Shares Dirty Truth About Wind and Solar Energy
Wind, solar, and electric vehicles aren't the clean energy accomplishments that many claim, climatologist David Legates says.“The lithium, the atrium, all of the rare earth minerals that are necessary for the batteries, that are necessary for the solar panels, that are necessary for the wind turbines … are called rare earths,” Legates explains on “The Daily Signal Podcast.” These rare earth minerals are acquired through strip mining, he says, a process that involves putting large chunks of earth into a solution. Once the minerals are extracted, what is left is a “toxic sludge lake."The process of strip mining changes the environment, adds Legates, a visiting fellow who serves on the Science Advisory Committee for the Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment at The Heritage Foundation. Legates, also a professor emeritus at the University of Delaware, is the author of a Heritage paper on rising sea levels.Legates, who joins this episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast," explains how wind turbines and solar panels are created and discusses his new book “Climate and Energy: The Case for Realism,” co-authored with E. Calvin Beisner. He also identifies what the cleanest form of energy really is. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Learn more about your ad choices. Why Nonprofits Serving Homeless Should STOP Taking Government Money
After spending years serving the needs of the poor and homeless through nonprofit ministry, James Whitford says he learned that “it's good for nonprofits … to stay away from government funding.” Whitford, the co-founder and CEO of True Charity, a national initiative to reform charity work, started serving the poor through a ministry called Watered Gardens Ministries in Joplin, Missouri, over two decades ago. Over time, he has crafted a model for how nonprofits can best serve the needs of the poor and actually be a part of solving the homeless crisis. Step one, according to Whitford, is declining government funding because it reduces fundraising efforts, which disengages local donations, and “those local donors are often volunteers as well,” he tells “The Daily Signal Podcast.” “So there's a kind of a symbiosis between the local donor and being a volunteer,” according to Whitford. “Sometimes it's a volunteer first that becomes a donor. Sometimes it's a donor that becomes a volunteer. But the last thing we want to do is crowd out local involvement in the work.” Nonprofits working with the poor also need to measure the “impact, not just outputs, but outcomes,” of the work they are doing, he says. And finally, “nonprofit leaders need to embrace work for their clients.”Whitford joins the podcast to explain how nonprofits can create a sustainable model to address homelessness and poverty in their communities.
