Within Tolerance

This week Dylan is joined by Jonathan Boggs of Triiaxis. Jonathan just recently went full-time making his first model of knife, the Iris. Jonathan tells Dylan how he got into machining in the Air National Guard and some interesting parts he made along the way. He shares his recent trials buying a used lathe, tearing it apart, and fixing it. Jonathan also shares some interesting power issues he's had, and some creative post edits he's used to work around them.

This week Dylan is joined by Clive Murphy, founder of Powerbrake, a manufacturer of high performance brake systems for the 4x4 market. Clive talks about the origins of Powerbrake, learning to specialize to grow a business, and the trial and tribulations of starting a 5 axis manufacturing company in South Africa. Clive also shares some stories from his time learning from Eliyahu Goldratt, author of the first #withintolerancebookclub book "The Goal".

This week Dylan is joined by Chris Bathgate, a machinist sculptor who produces beautiful art using machining and multiple materials. Chris talks about how he started down the machining path, the benefits of using smaller machines and having them at home, tips for shipping valuable pieces across the globe and more. This week Dylan is joined by Josh Hacko of Nicholas Hacko Watchmaker. Josh, his father, and Co. produce the only watches manufactured in Australia on some amazing machinery. Josh tells us the story of how NHW got into building watches after large watch companies began restricting parts purchases. Now, armed with years of experience and technical know-how they make gorgeous watches using Timascus in some of the main parts. Josh tells about the headaches working with such a unique material and all of the associated work finishing such an ambitious project.

This week Dylan is joined by AJ Huff from Design The Everything, a company that aims to make products you love to use everyday. Dylan and AJ talk about the book the "Purple Cow" by Seth Godin, the second book in the WT book club. AJ suggested this book a while ago and feels it's important for the machinist community to remember the marketing side of running a business. AJ and Dylan talk through how to distinguish your business, running ads on social media, and finding your "Purple Cow". Both round out the episode talking about 3D printing, battle bots, and Japanese sumo robots.

This week Dylan is joined by Tom Zelickman of Inspiration Metalworks. Tom talks about buying his new Hwacheon lathe and Hurco mill, getting 3 phase power in his shop, and his future move to full-time at his shop. Tom shares about his recent adventures cutting Silicon Carbide and using some crazy 6C Tools PCD tools. Both Dylan and Tom tell us about some car projects that are currently being worked on or are in the near future. Dylan talks about a new 3D printer project upcoming.

This week Dylan is joined by JT Belknap of DFM Toolworks, a Chicago based manufacturer of woodworking tools. JT starts off describing his entry into the engineering workforce with Toyota, doing everything from assembling cars to working in a foundry. JT shares some great insight into running a successful Amazon store, from packaging, to data collection, and inventory levels. JT and Dylan talk about smart torque wrenches, Pierson pallet systems, and probing.

This week Dylan is joined by Jonathan Hornell-Kennedy of Coreprint Patterns, a Hamilton based manufacturer of CNC machined patterns, molds, tools, and dies. Jonathan tells about his unique origins in financial engineering before transitioning to working for his fathers company and learning CAD.  After realizing a growing hole in the pattern making market he and a business partner started Coreprint Patterns. Jonathan and Dylan discuss the machines of Coreprint Patterns, favorite controllers, machining cast parts, AS9100 certification, and cassoulet. Dylan finishes the episode revealing the new book club structure and announcing the next book in the series, The Purple Cow by Seth Godin

This week Dylan is joined by Devin Bodony of Lichen Precision. Devin tells us his story getting into manufacturing, starting out building his own cabin and falling into machining looking for alternative power sources. Devin is a true modern Renaissance man and tells us stories about making Stirling engines, designing and building medical device fixtures, testing Nitinol for fracture toughness, building and designing his own bike frames and parts and more!

This week Dylan is joined by Brian Dinola of Autodesk. Brian starts off the episode telling Dylan of how he got into manufacturing in his dads jewelry shop, learning CAD,CAM, and programming to make pieces for the business. Brian also talks about joining Delcam, working on Swiss lathes and 5 axis, and utilizing Powermill and Partmaker. Both talk about the Autodesk acquisition of Delcam, and the things moving over from those products and into Fusion 360. Brian gives a different perspective on subscription licenses versus perpetual licenses.
