Cowboys, Giants, Panthers find their next head coach, plus divisional round preview

After the Cowboys stole the spotlight from the Seahawks' wild card win on Sunday night by announcing mid-game that they'd be parting ways with Jason Garrett, they kept hold of the news-cycle into Monday morning when news broke that Mike McCarthy would be his replacement.Terez Paylor & Charles Robinson break down the pros and cons of the new head coaching hire in Dallas, some common criticisms of the former Packer coach and if the Cowboys should've gone after a younger coach from the college ranks instead. (0:15)Going after a successful college coach is exactly what the Carolina Panthers did when they landed Baylor's Matt Rhule for an unprecedented 7-year, $60m deal. Terez & Charles dissect owner David Tepper's big splash and the new coach's fit with the organization. (20:25)In more of a head-scratching move, the New York Giants landed on Joe Judge for their head coaching vacancy, formerly the receivers coach and special teams coordinator of the New England Patriots. What is known about Judge and can he survive in the pressure cooker that is the New York media landscape? (28:15)Wrapping up the head-coaching musical chairs, our experts break down where the Cleveland Browns are in their coaching search (37:35) before diving into the dissatisfaction surrounding the fact that Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy has yet to land a head coaching gig. Is it a failure of the Rooney Rule or someone else? (42:45)Terez & Charles take a pair of listener questions on the Texans and Cowboys (45:18) before breaking down all four divisional round matchups this weekend: Vikings/49ers, Titans/Ravens, Texans/Chiefs and Seahawks/Packers. Wild Card Sunday Night Freestyle: Cousins likes that, Brady vanquished and Garrett fired

In a Wild Card round where two games went to overtime and the other two were decided by only one possession, of course the biggest story from the weekend had to come from the Dallas Cowboys – who didn't even play!Terez Paylor and Charles Robinson open this Sunday night podcast with Kirk Cousins' demon-shedding overtime win in the Superdome against the New Orleans Saints (0:20) before addressing the elephant in the room: the Dallas Cowboys finally fired Jason Garrett. Terez & Charles discuss a possible blockbuster move Jerry Jones could orchestrate to land one of the league's elite coaches. (12:05)The Cowboys news completely overshadowed the Seattle Seahawks 19-7 win over an injured Philadelphia Eagles squad. Our experts praise the Seahawks' strong defense and give their initial thoughts about their matchup in Green Bay next weekend. (18:45)Later, they recap Derrick Henry and the Tennessee Titans' impressive win over the New England Patriots and explore the chances that Tom Brady will leave for another team this offseason. (26:45)Finally, they relish in the craziness that was the Houston Texans/Buffalo Bills game on Saturday afternoon. DeShaun Watson willed the Texans to win like vintage Michael Jordan, Josh Allen threw the ball all over the place & Bills Mafia showed up to arguably the most fun game of the weekend. Browns, Giants continue house-cleaning as Black Monday extends into Tuesday

Black Monday in the NFL is known for the avalanche of coach and GM hirings, but the Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys extended the suspense into Tuesday.Terez Paylor and Charles Robinson react to the spate of firings in Cleveland, New York and elsewhere in the days following the end of the 2019 regular season. They lead off the show with the Cleveland Browns firing GM John Dorsey 48 hours after they let go of head coach Freddie Kitchens. What led to this changeover within the Browns and who could they hire to replace him, knowing that Paul DePodesta still has power in Cleveland? (0:15)They shift their focus to the New York Giants firing head coach Pat Shurmur, keeping GM Dave Gettleman and focusing their head coaching search on Baylor's Matt Rhule. (16:30)Moving to Dallas, at the time of this writing and recording, Jason Garrett is still the head coach of the Cowboys. From what they're hearing, Charles & Terez believe the organization is allowing him to say his goodbyes before letting him go. With that in mind, they lay the Garrett era to rest and explore the possibility that Urban Meyer, Lincoln Riley or Greg Roman could be the next head coach in Big D. (26:45)Elsewhere in the NFC East, Washington made the first head coach hire while other teams were still firing their guys. Ron Rivera will be the next coach in burgundy and gold. Our experts react to the news and hope that some stability will return to the snake-bit organization. (35:50)Terez and Charles wrap up their coaching discussion on the Jacksonville Jaguars retaining Doug Marrone (41:25) before diving into the weekend's four wild card games: Bills at Texans, Titans at Patriots, Vikings at Saints and Seahawks at Eagles (48:50).Stay up to date with the latest NFL news and coverage from Yahoo Sports on Twitter @YahooSportsNFL.Follow Charles @CharlesRobinsonFollow Terez @TerezPaylorTag your questions for the guys on Twitter with #YahooNFLPodcastCheck out the rest of the Yahoo Sports Podcast family at https://apple.co/2Abi8jk or at yahoosports.com/podcasts See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. 📢 Check out the Yahoo Sports podcast network or yahoosports.tv

Week 17 Sunday Night Freestyle: 2019 ends fittingly with another blown call & a Jameis pick-six

The 2019 regular season ended with a number of moments that seemed to perfectly encapsulate the season: another missed defensive pass interference call, a Jameis Winston pick-six, the Detroit Lions losing in heartbreaking fashion. Some things never change.Terez Paylor & Charles Robinson recap the final weekend of the 2019 NFL season, starting with the Seahawks controversial loss to the 49ers in primetime and the subsequent playoff repercussions, the Patriots even more surprising loss to the Dolphins (4:35) and the disappointing resolution to the NFC East (13:00).Later in the show, they touch on a hard-nosed Tennessee Titans team that seemingly no one wants to play in January (21:05), the Cleveland Browns firing head coach Freddie Kitchens after one season (26:15), the Broncos having a summer to build around Drew Lock (37:40) and whether Kyler Murray should win rookie of the year (48:25).Stay up to date with the latest NFL news and coverage from Yahoo Sports on Twitter @YahooSportsNFL.Follow Charles @CharlesRobinsonFollow Terez @TerezPaylorTag your questions for the guys on Twitter with #YahooNFLPodcastCheck out the rest of the Yahoo Sports Podcast family at https://apple.co/2Abi8jk or at yahoosports.com/podcasts See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. 📢 Check out the Yahoo Sports podcast network or yahoosports.tv

Beast mode back in Seattle, are some doomed coaches safe and trap game for Philly?

It's Christmas Eve at the time this podcast was released, but Seattle fans got their presents a couple days early. Marshawn Lynch, Seahawk icon who destroyed the New Orleans Saints in 2011 with the Beast Quake run, signed with Seattle this week after the team had to put Chris Carson on IR. Terez Paylor & Charles Robinson dive into the seismic news in Seattle, but first they address the Minnesota Vikings' soul-searching loss to the Green Bay Packers on Monday night. Is this the ceiling for Kirk Cousins, who has had a statistically impressive season, but has yet to carry any team over the hump in the playoffs? (0:15)Then, our experts dive into the running back news out of Seattle and wonder, if Pete Carroll has a 3rd or 4th & goal on the one-yard line this January, will he finally hand the ball off to Marshawn? (7:15)Looking ahead to this weekend, Charles & Terez wonder if the Philadelphia Eagles aren't primed for a trap game against the New York Giants, who put up huge offensive numbers last week and might want to play spoiler to their division nemesis. (11:45)For the bulk of the episode, the guys discuss the handful of coaches who are presumed to be coaching their last games this weekend. Are the likes of Pat Shurmur, Jason Garrett, Doug Marrone and Dan Quinn really on their way out, or are a few of those guys a strong win away from saving their jobs? Also, what about wild-card candidates like Freddie Kitchens and Anthony Lynn? (16:50)One team that won't be moving on from their coach, despite a disappointing season, is the Los Angeles Rams. Charles has some behind-the-scenes updates on a few different stories that will likely come out of the club this offseason. (45:50)Finally, the guys wrap the show up taking a listener question about the Denver Broncos future and a potential Derrick Henry landing spot (52:40).Stay up to date with the latest NFL news and coverage from Yahoo Sports on Twitter @YahooSportsNFL.Follow Charles @CharlesRobinsonFollow Terez @TerezPaylorTag your questions for the guys on Twitter with #YahooNFLPodcastCheck out the rest of the Yahoo Sports Podcast family at https://apple.co/2Abi8jk or at yahoosports.com/podcasts See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. 📢 Check out the Yahoo Sports podcast network or yahoosports.tv

Week 16 Sunday Night Freestyle: Cowboys couldn't live up to moment of truth in Philly

A fourth and 8. A season on the line. A star wide receiver sitting on the bench. Assuming the Eagles beat the Giants next week, that's where the 2019 Dallas Cowboys season ended and as all signs seem to indicate, the Jason Garrett era in Big D as well. Terez Paylor and Charles Robinson open their Week 16 recap with the headline coming out of the NFC "least": the Cowboys all but kissing their playoff hopes goodbye with a loss in Philly. There was plenty of finger pointing after the show, but as our experts indicate, getting rid of Jason Garrett won't be the end to the Cowboys' woes. Terez & Charles recap all of the Week 16 games including Michael Thomas' brilliant and record-breaking performance in Tennessee (10:20), the Seahawks' surprising loss at home to the Cardinals (13:55), why the Cleveland Browns aren't ruling out a coaching change (22:00) and the surprisingly high-octane performances from the Bengals, Dolphins, Giants and Washington. Suggs to KC, Patricia stays put & why Josh Gordon isn't gone forever

With only two weeks to go in the regular season, a slew of small transactions are highlighting the lead-up into Week 16.After Terez Paylor & Charles Robinson react to Drew Brees' record-breaking performance on Monday night vs. the Colts, they analyze the Kansas City Chiefs' shrewd move to add former Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs after he had been placed on waivers by the Cardinals. (10:40)Up in Seattle, news broke on Monday that receiver Josh Gordon had been suspended for the sixth time since 2013, this time for violation of the league's PED and substance abuse policies. Charles explains why, contrary to popular belief, this might not be the end of Gordon's career, and Terez explains how the league's softening views on marijuana might play into how suspensions are ruled in the future. (16:20)The Detroit Lions announced that they would be retaining the services of head coach Matt Patricia and GM Bob Quinn. Our experts lament the sorry Lions and try to see a silver lining to the head-scratching decision. (22:00)Urban Meyer turned heads on Sunday by watching the Eagles/Redskins game from a luxury box in Washington. The guys debate whether or not Meyer has the chops to coach in the NFL. (28:35)Finally, Charles & Terez wrap up the podcast previewing five important Week 16 matchups: Bills/Patriots, Rams/49ers, Saints/Titans, Cowboys/Eagles and Packers/Vikings. The evidence behind the Spygate sequel and truth behind the OBJ trade rumors

It's never not a busy week in the NFL and the lead-up to Week 15 is no exception. Whereas most teams never get involved in a single cheating scandal, the New England Patriots are now smack dab in their second one, their third if you include deflate-gate.Charles Robinson & Terez Paylor break down the intriguing evidence behind the incident that can only be known as Spygate 2.0. What's troubling about the video crew purportedly recording an in-house video and is there a possibility the Patriots are telling the truth? (0:15)On Sunday, there was more drama coming from the Cleveland Browns locker room after it was reported that Odell Beckham, Jr. said, "come get me" to at least one other team and was secretly plotting his way out of the troubled organization. Charles gives some background on the origins of OBJ's issues with the Browns and names at least one team he might have issued this request to (Hint: they're in northern California and have a chance to make it to the Super Bowl this year). (17:15)Rewinding it all the way back to Monday night, the guys throw some love to Eli Manning after he didn't embarrass himself in what may have been his final game (32:10) before trying to determine who will win the NFC East: the Dallas Cowboys or Philadelphia Eagles. (35:15)Looking ahead to Week 15, the guys preview the three games they're most interested in checking out in Rams @ Cowboys, Texans @ Titans and Bills @ Steelers. (39:15)They close out the show answering some listener questions about Spygate 2.0, the Panthers head coaching search and GM candidates in 2020. Sunday delivered two conference championship-caliber games in New England and New Orleans, whose Hall of Fame quarterbacks both lost to up-and-comers in Kansas City and San Francisco, respectively.Terez Paylor & Charles Robinson recap every game from Sunday, starting with the 49ers-Saints 48-46 masterpiece that Terez caught in person and where it stacks up among other recent classics (see: Chiefs-Rams 2018). (0:15)Next, they dissect the many crazy subplots of the Patriots' loss to the Chiefs in a rematch of last year's AFC championship game. What happened to the Chiefs' gear that got lost at the airport?
