One of the only things we can count on in life is change, and this week is no exception. As usual, the tsunami of tech advancements and changes pushes forward, and I'm covering some of the ones I found most significant. Dell Employee's Revolt - You won't find "give your employees an ultimatum" in any leadership books, and there's a good reason why. Not only does it not work, but you'll quickly find yourself with a bigger mess than you started with. Dell is learning that lesson the hard way when more than half of their employees spun the cylinder, smiled, and pulled the trigger. Anthropic Claude 3.5 Sonnet - The GenAI wars continue and Anthropic is the latest to throw down. Sonnet 3.5 is out, and it's beating its competitors in benchmarks and human feedback. So, do you switch tools, wait for the next move, or something in between? With the way things are moving, it's like watching the cord cutter movement play out all over again. AI Job Stealing - Humans will always have a role in their company...at least they willl until they don't. Or at least that's what a recent leader shared after he and his 60-person team were eliminated after they successfully automated all their function's work. However, did AI really "steal" their jobs or was the writing on the wall all along and everyone was too busy playing with their AI tools to notice? Sex Robots - Well, the Siths of AI continue keeping pace with their Jedi counterparts as a company in China announced it would be "enhancing" their sex robots with generative AI as early as this summer. While I don't see walking, talking sex robots going mainstream anytime soon, it is a concerning indicator of what's to come. AI Text-to-Video Developments - AI Text-to-video seems to be following a similar path to its AI text-to-image counterparts, now making it possible for consumers to simply type their animated ideas into existence. Like much of the advancements we see, there's a lot of potential for good held in tension with the potential for bad. Or, who knows, maybe we'll land squarely in the middle with an even bigger tidal wave of AI-generated garbage. With that, we've made it through another week, and with it comes another list of interesting developments at the intersection of business, tech, and human experience. This week's are a little unique in that there is a red thread that runs through them all. As always, thanks to the community of you who send along topics and feedback. With that, let's hit it. Microsoft Recalls Recall - It's never fun to admit when there's egg all over your face, especially when you're the one who put it there. However, Microsoft stepped up to the plate after the intense reaction to Microsoft Recall and while they haven't completely recalled the product, they have changed it so you have to opt-in versus opt-out. Who says we can't inspire change? Apple & OpenAI's $0 Deal - You don't typically see gentleman's agreements between massive companies, and I'm sure in this case, there were still plenty of lawyers involved. However, the partnership between Apple and OpenAI doesn't appear to have a formal dollar amount associated with it. While that's led many to go the conspiratorial route, there seems to be some pretty logical explanations on why that's where they landed. Apple's OnDevice AI - Speaking of conspiracies, many have been wondering if Apple Intelligence is just a fancy way to distract you from your data being taken and sent elsewhere. However, digging deeper into the capabilities of Apple's OnDevice model, it's clear we're moving into an age where Internet connectivity and massive data centers won't be a dependency for fully capable GenAI. That's probably good since everyone demanding a digital Maybach for occasional AI use isn't terribly sustainable. Snowden Calls Out OpenAI - While OpenAI adding a former NSA Director to their board may have slipped past many, Edward Snowden wasn't one of them. He also had some pretty harsh words to say about the decision, letting people know "They've been warned." However, while he's got some legitimate reasons for concern, is this really the government conspiracy many have been led to believe? I'm not convinced based on OpenAI's needs as a company and the purpose of board members. Autonomous Warfare - While autonomous sharpshooters have historically been reserved for sci-fi military movies, a video I watched this week showcases how science fiction is quickly becoming a reality. And, while some are suggesting there's no reason for concern since we'll just live in a world where robots fight robots, I can't help but wonder about their choice of weapons. If I were in a fight against a robot, a gun wouldn't be my weapon of choice. It'd be a lot more logical, and I'd certainly feel a lot more comfortable if they were walking around with buckets of water. Apple Intelligence - Lots of folks have been patiently waiting for Apple's big release this week to learn more about what's coming from them around AI, and the hype has been significant. Well, the time has come, and if you were looking to have your mind blown......well, let's just say you might walk away disappointed. However, there are a few interesting updates that carry some intriguing potential. AI Meetings - Zoom's CEO thinks we need to send AI agents to attend our meetings for us, so we can be in multiple places at once. I mean, I get the line of thinking, but why aren't we asking the bigger question of, "if an AI agent attending and sending us a summary is all that's needed, couldn't that meeting have been an email?" AI Growth Trajectory - Sam Altman doesn't hold back when he apologetically says GPT-4o is the dumbest model we'll ever have to deal with, hinting that what's ahead will be a notable improvement. Critics question the sustainability of model development. Former OpenAI employee Leopold Aschenbrenner put a lot of color on the canvas about what's ahead in his 165-page, comprehensive essay. AI Brick Wall - What happens when AI consumes literally everything available on the Internet? It's a bit mind-boggling to think that we're almost there, but here we are, and it has some people predicting a major bottleneck for AI advancement. So, what's the solution? AI-generated data? Maybe, but how long can a snake eat its own tail before everything goes sideways? Universal Basic Compute - It's an interesting thought experiment to consider what it would be like if our entire economic system got turned on its head. What if you paid for everything with tokens and compute power instead of the currency you use today? Would it be an easier path and deliver a better solution to the major problems held by our current economic structure, offering a utopian alternative? While the shift is rapidly becoming plausible, I don't think see it delivering on any of its promises given the root problems still exist. As you may have guessed, the pace of change isn't slowing down, but I hope this week's update will have you seriously considering taking a pause. I do this for you, so let me know how I can keep it valuable. With that, let's get to it. Apple + OpenAI - Are those wedding bells I hear? It's official: Apple and OpenAI tied the knot, but what will their offspring look like? Too early to tell. However, I'd wager to bet we're going to see the number of people who formally engage with LLMs on a daily basis steeply rise. Whether that's a good thing or not, it's still too early to tell. ChatGPT Outage - If you've been waiting to experience what the apocalypse might be like, you got a slight taste earlier this week. Jokes about the sudden decline in whitepapers and digital media aside, it was concerning to see how some businesses who have already become overly dependent on GenAI had everything come to a screeching halt. Maybe it's just me, but it's always a good idea to have a backup plan. Microsoft Recall - How excited are you that Windows can log your every movement so you don't have to bother using that pesky brain of yours to remember what you did a few minutes ago? Apparently, people aren't quite ready to extend Microsoft that kind of trust based on their response to the capability. AI GTA Madness - What happens when you train an AI to win by getting as many points as possible in a specific period of time? It finds a way to get as many points as possible in that period of time, even if it means the most efficient way to do it is continually running over innocent pedestrians. If you still aren't convinced you need to slow down before charging forward with AI, Robert Miles may change your mind. AI Flash Gordon - What does it look like when a team of AI agents work together to build a complex system? I don't know. I blinked. In all seriousness, the speed at which AI agents can work together is mind-blowing, but unchecked, you might just find they built you a giant mess you have to clean up. So again, while AI is an increcible tool, we need to slow down and think before we act. The days may feel long, but the weeks quickly fly by, and this week is no exception. It's hard to believe we're already putting May in the rearview mirror. As usual, there were far too many updates to cover in a single episode; however, I'll be covering some of the ones I think are most notable. Thanks also to all of you who send feedback and topics for consideration. Keep them coming! With that, let's hit it. Reddit Chaos - I'm not a big fan of "told you so" moments, but there is a subtle satisfaction that comes when they arrive. When it comes to connecting Reddit to GenAI, it didn't take long for that moment to show up. As predicted, the lack of data cleaing practices and validation criteria went as expected and there has been a slew of crazy responses. Check them out if you want a good laugh (or cry). OpenAI Safety & New Model - GPT-What?! That's right, OpenAI has officially announced it has started training the successor of GPT-4. While we still don't have an official name, speculation on what we can expect to see is well on its way. Whatever is cooking, it must pack a punch since alongside that announcement came the announcement to formalize a new Safety Board. While it no doubt was influenced by the recent safety execs, it's a step in the right direction. Stanford Transparency Index - How much do we really know about how the AI sausage is made? According to a six month study by Standford, not a lot. Their Transparency Index highlights that while there has been improvements since Oct 2023, there is still a lot of room for improvement. Add to that, the "improvements" can be a bit misleading if you look beneath the surface. Google Safety Framework - Google has shared its safety framework, outlining the process they'll be following to assess when their models approach pre-defined risk thresholds, triggering mandatory mitigation planning. While it's good to have a well defined process, it's hard to know how effective it will be when it's not quite clear what exactly crosses the line. AI Kill Switch - When a global group of the largest, privately-held AI providers get together and universally agree on a "kill switch," you can't help but ask yourself "what kind of monster have we created?" Another step in the right direction that reveals a lot about where we are on the tech journey. And, I can't help but wonder what it really will take to "put down" one of these Leviathans.
