Issa Amro On Surviving Israel's New Government
Katie talks to Palestinian activist Issa Amro about Israeli's new government and how to survive it.
Issa Amro is a Palestinian Human Rights Defender from Hebron, West Bank. He is the recipient of the One World Media Award in 2009 and recognized as Human Rights Defender of the Year in Palestine in 2010 by the United Nations. He is the founder of the Hebron-based direct action group Youth Against Settlements.
UN Special Rapporteurs reported that Amro had been arrested and detained by Israel more than 20 times in the year 2012 alone. Amro was featured in Amnesty International’s global Write for Rights campaign in 2017 to support him through his trial in Israeli military court. In winter 2021, Amro was convicted on six charges related to his community activism, including three counts of participating in a protest without a permit.” The trial was criticized by prominent human rights organizations, international lawmakers and independent UN experts. He was also prosecuted by the Palestinian Authorities for “causing public strife” and insulting higher authorities” on social media under the draconian cybercrime law and 1960 Jordanian penal code. Amro has sporadically been arrested, jailed, tried and harassed by Palestinian authorities since 2017.

Maya Garner talks Issa Amro & Stefania Maurizi talks Julian Assange & New Book
Award-winning Italian journalist Stefania Maurizi talks about her award-winning book "Secret Power: WikiLeaks and Its Enemies." She touches on what it was like meeting and working with Julian Assange, debunks commonly held myths about him and wiki-leaks and shares what it was like being spied on while visiting him. She also talks about her fight for secret documents.
Plus a breaking news update from Maya Garner, a Scandinavian-American human rights advocate and coordinator for international advocacy for Youth Against Settlements and Friends of Hebron, about Israel's arrest of activist Issa Amro (https://twitter.com/Issaamro.)
Stefania Maurizi is an Italian investigative journalist working for the Italian daily Il Fatto Quotidiano, after 14 years working for the Italian newsmagazine l'Espresso and the Italian daily La Repubblica. She has worked on all WikiLeaks releases of secret documents since 2009. Khan, the father of the Pakistani atomic bomb, revealed the condolence payment agreement between the US government and the family of Italian aid worker Giovanni Lo Porto, killed in a US drone strike, and investigated the harsh working conditions of Pakistani workers in a major Italian garment factory in Karachi.
