This week on the Leadership Podcast, Joe Caruso joins Bradley to share what he learned from being diagnosed with incurable cancer, his new focus in life, and the principles from his book, “The Power of Losing Control.”After being diagnosed with an incurable cancer when he was 18, Joe committed whatever time he had left to spending five hours a day, five days per week, studying life. He wanted to identify what he now refers to as “Simple, Common, Timeless Human Truths.” In his quest, Joe felt compelled to answer a simple, yet difficult question before he was overcome by the cancer: What is the essence of a fulfilling, successful, and happy life? Joe became one of the first people ever cured of metastasized testicular cancer. With this gift, he decided he would continue his studies, and began to collect and analyze his findings on life.Joe Caruso is now an expert on the individual mind, the collective mind of an organization and how meaning drives our behavior and determines outcomes in all aspects of life. As an author, business advisor and speaker, Joe brings his lifetime of expertise to help organizations and leaders change the way they see themselves -- and in turn, the way they think about markets, products and services. Joe has learned this change in thinking drives new behavior and allows organizations to sharpen focus and reach greater levels of success. In this episode, he touched on a few key points, including:People bringing solutions not always problemsBeing fully present in the momentStruggle is the law of growthSynergy within the teamWisdom is knowledge put to workLearn more about his Caruso Leadership Institute when you visit www.carusoleadership.com

Episode 148: The Bottom Line - 350 lbs.

What if someone told you that they weighed 700 lbs last year, and that they lost 350 lbs in the space of 360 days?  You’d want to know what they did!  But if someone told you they currently weigh 350 lbs, you might be less interested in how they got there.  Or, think about this.  What if someone told you they gained 175 lbs last year, and they now weight 350 lbs.  This causes alarm bells.  You’re going to probably encourage that person to look at what they’ve done over the past year so that it doesn’t happen again. This illustrates clearly how important the context of your current situation is!  Where you are today matters less than where you have been.  (This is our principle of trajectory > speed.)  It is so much more important to look at where the systems you have in place are taking you than knowing simply where you are right now. Then, you can assess if those systems will get you where you truly want to go.  I want to encourage you to spend thirty minutes of “thinking time” around these questions:Where have I been? (One year ago)Where am I at? (Today)Where am I going? (One year from today)
