Frank Montano and Rev. Jarrett Maupin on Racism in America
This week on Broken Potholes, Sam Stone is joined by former Navy SEAL Frank Montano and civil rights leader Rev. Jarrett Maupin.Frank Montano was born in Mexicali and, after his father died when he was 7, his mother sent him and his brother to California to live with family who could care for him. At a young age, Frank decided that he would dedicate his life to becoming a SEAL and serving on the front lines for the country that gave him freedom and opportunity. After graduating high school, Frank joined the Navy, became an American citizen, and earned his SEAL Trident. The Reverend Jarrett Maupin has been a minister since he was 12 years old. At 19, he became one of the youngest people to hold elected office in the state of Arizona when he was elected to serve on the Phoenix Union High School District Governing Board. Since then, he has become one of the most prominent community organizers and civil rights leaders in Phoenix. Dr. Spencer Case and Henry Olsen on the Future of Progressivism
Dr. Spencer Case and Henry Olsen join this week's episode of Broken Potholes with our hosts Sam Stone and Chuck Warren. Dr. Spencer Case is a freelance writer and 2018 CU Boulder philosophy Ph.D. He is now an international research fellow at the Wuhan University school of philosophy in China. He is the author of the recent article You Have the Right to Email Politically Silent. Dr. Case spent eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve, working as a public affairs specialist with an emphasis on print and photography. During this time he completed two deployments: to Iraq in 2005-2006 with the 207th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment and to Afghanistan in 2009-2010 with the 304th Public Affairs Detachment. Henry Olsen is a Washington Post columnist focusing on politics, populism, and American conservative thought. Olsen began his career as a political consultant at the California firm of Hoffenblum-Mollrich. After three years working for the California Assembly Republican Caucus, he returned to school to become a lawyer. Following law school he clerked for the Honorable Danny J. Boggs on the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and as an associate in the Philadelphia office of Dechert, Price & Rhoads. He then joined the think tank world where he spent the next eighteen years as an executive at a variety of institutions, serving as the President of the Commonwealth Foundation, a Vice President at the Manhattan Institute, and as Vice President and Director, National Research Initiative, at the American Enterprise Institute. He left AEI in 2013 to pursue a career in political analysis and writing at EPPC. During that time his work has appeared in variety of leading publications in America and the United Kingdom. He is the author or co-author of two books, "The Working Class Republican: Ronald Reagan and the Return of Blue-Collar Conservatism" and (with Dante J. Scala) "The Four Faces of the Republican Party". His biennial election predictions have been widely praised for the uncanny accuracy, and he is a frequent guest on television and radio programs. We had two special guests join us for this weeks episode of Broken Potholes with hosts Sam Stone and Chuck Warren. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko joins to talk about border security and her Immigration Bill. Alex Swoyer of the Washington Times joins the show to talk about Supreme Court packing and her experiences living in Washington D.C. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko serves the people of Arizona Congressional District 8 in the U.S. Congress. Since first being elected, she has been dedicated to helping constituents and addressing issues that affect her district, the state and the nation. From tax relief for working families to removing burdensome regulations on businesses to strengthening our national defense, she is proud of the work she has accomplished. But she believes there is so much more to do especially in the area of improving healthcare, border security and fighting the coronavirus pandemic. Debbie serves on the House Judiciary Committee, House Committee on Homeland Security and House Committee on Rules and is the Republican Co-Chair of the Bipartisan Congressional Caucus on Women's Issues. Alex Swoyer attended the Missouri School of Journalism where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast. After graduating from law school in Florida, she decided to leave the courtroom and return to the newsroom as a legal affairs reporter for The Washington Times. She has experience covering stories in the mid-Missouri, Houston and southwest Florida areas where she worked at local affiliate TV stations and received a First Place Mark of Excellence Award from the Society of Professional Journalists. Mia Love on Immigration and the Border Crisis
Former Congresswoman Mia Love joins Sam Stone and Chuck Warren on this weeks episode of Broken Potholes. Love was the first African-American Republican woman in Congress. She brought a unique personal history and diverse résumé to the House. Love, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, was born in New York, studied theater in Connecticut, converted to the Church of Latter-day Saints, moved to Utah, and was a staunch proponent of small government. But Love's career in politics, long before she served in the House, revolved around policy more than her individual story. "I wasn't elected in Saratoga Springs because of my race or my gender or my heels," she said in 2013 about her time as mayor. "I was elected by the people there because I had a plan and a vision to get us financially stable." Congressman Burgess Owens on the American Dream
Congressman Burgess Owens joins this weeks episode of Broken Potholes to discuss his first months in Congress, his history growing up in America and his life experiences after playing 10 years in the NFL. Burgess Owens is a former University of Miami and NFL star who travels the country delivering a message of optimism, hope, and unity. He spent his childhood growing up in the Deep South during a time when the barriers of segregation were being torn down. As the third black American granted a scholarship to play football at the University of Miami, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Chemistry. During his college career, Burgess was named to Who's Who Among College Students in American Universities and Colleges. He was inducted to the Hall of Fame of Outstanding College Athletes of America and later to the University of Miami's Hall of Fame and the Orange Bowl Ring of Honor. Since retiring from the NFL, Burgess has devoted his time to mentoring and improving the lives of our next generation of leaders. He founded Second Chance 4 Youth; a Utah based non-profit organization dedicated to helping troubled an incarcerated youth. Burgess is an outspoken advocate for conservative values and is the Congressman for Utah's 4th Congressional District.
