Interview with Elephante (Tim Wu)
We had the opportunity to interview Tim Wu aka Elephante at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego! "Hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Tim Wu began his musical career as a classically-trained pianist and singer-songwriter, playing in bands in high school and college. Graduating from Harvard University, soon after taking his first desk job Wu realized that the corporate lifestyle was not for him, as he spent every waking hour producing music to keep himself sane. Finally embracing the 'Elephant in the room' that was his desire to break free from the monotonous 9-5 routine, Wu set his sights on the dance music sphere and Elephante was born -quite literally giving up his day job in order to hone his craft and make his mark as one of the most innovative dance music producers around today. In his short career Elephante has already amassed hundreds of millions of streams across his two independent EP's, I Am The Elephante (2016) and Glass Mansion (2018), and received support from the likes of Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, and Rolling Stone. He has appeared at major festivals including EDC Las Vegas, Electric Zoo and Hangout Fest, while also fulfilling his duties as a resident DJ in Las Vegas. He has sold out shows at historic venues such as Irving Plaza and The Regency Ballroom, and will be continuing to grow his hard-ticket footprint in Fall 2019." Interview with The Beaches
We had the opportunity to interview The Beaches! "There has always been an undeniable, almost preternatural connection between The Beaches and music. Each member of the Toronto garage rock group remembers being drawn to their instrument casually until developing a specific, important need to create and perform their own work. Miller sisters Jordan and Kylie remember picking up the guitar as young as six years old, eventually going to practices together. Jordan admits that Sheryl Crow's appearance on Kid Rock's "Picture" was her inspiration to learn how to strum. Soon, the pair would find themselves immersed in their own original works. "We ended writing songs at an early age and found a passion for that," Kylie says. Eliza Enman-McDaniel remembers being taught the guitar by her father at a young age, too. Her curiosity grew and from there she discovered other instruments, most importantly the drums, which she says she found in the comfort of her grandmother's home. "My grandmother had a drum kit in her basement so I was able to go next door and play whenever I wanted, jamming on my own," she says. And Leandra Earl had a connection so profound to the piano that, after 12 years of playing, she was going to dedicate her postsecondary education to classical piano. The sisters Miller, along with Eliza, would eventually become a band – a best friend's dream. Casually, one day, while walking to school, Jordan and Kylie asked if Eliza would be interested in joining their band. "She came to our studio and we ended up jamming together. The three of us have been playing ever since then," Kylie explains. The trio would then be in another band at the time called Done With Dolls—a pop punk creation by Disney affiliate, Family Channel. But, as Kylie explains, it really wasn't exactly they wanted to do long-term. "In high school we decided to change our sound and the name of the band and that's when we got our friend Leandra to join," she says. This is the genesis of The Beaches. There is a real and important specialness to a group of young girls being drawn to rock and pop music as a creative pursuit. Their love of the genre and of forming a real relationship with their instruments—eventually foundational for their enormous fan base—was clear from the beginning. Named appropriately after the Toronto neighbourhood they all hail from, The Beaches is as authentically rock 'n' roll as it comes. Their 70s aesthetic, vivacious attitude, and electrifying sounds all fit harmoniously in a modern rock context. Rock music is an experience; it's a visceral reaction to a moment, emotion, or a mood. And all of that is all built upon the foundation of live performance. The Beaches prioritize and emphasize instruments, not backing tracks, when they are onstage, beckoning their audience to go on a hypnotic journey only live music can accomplish. "When people come see us live, they are only going to hear that live version of the song," Jordan says. "It's going to be slightly different each time. And that's sort of a powerful thing to experience." The Beaches released their sizzling debut LP, Late Show, in October 2017 via Universal Music Group Canada. Late Show is representative of the band's unity. After some time spent in Los Angeles, working on other tracks with a variety of rock and pop producers, The Beaches came back to Toronto, bringing the lessons of those sessions back with them. Working with Toronto Aughts rock legends Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw of Metric—and occasional Broken Social Scene members—The Beaches were able to truly define themselves as a rock 'n' roll project on their own turns. They are a fusion of past and present, defiantly placing them in a modern and future context where rock prevails. Now, on their newest EP, The Professional, out May 16, The Beaches have further evolved as songwriters and musicians. On The Professional, the band worked with legendary producer Garrett "Jacknife" Lee. Lee has worked with important mod --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Interview with Crankdat (Christian Smith)
We had the opportunity to interview Christian Smith also known as Crankdat! "Smith grew up desiring to be an athlete, but ultimately turned down a full-ride track-and-field scholarship to Kent State University to pursue music, producing energetic and melodically vibrant electronic dance music as Crankdat. Smith began making music while still in high school. Smith originally gained recognition for remixing other artists' tracks, including Fetty Wap's breakout single, "Trap Queen." Eventually, these remixes racked up millions of plays and Smith, barely out of his teens, was getting attention from bigger names in electronic dance music such as Skrillex and The Chainsmokers. Crankdat released original tracks as he toured, including the Jauz collaboration "I Hold Still" as well as the triumphant "Dollars," both in 2017." Interview with The Bouncing Souls
We had the opportunity to interview The Bouncing Souls! Purchase their new book and EP: https://www.bouncingsouls.com/ "It's tough because, you know, people are going to tell you they know something, but nobody knows s--t." - Greg Attonito It would be easy for The Bouncing Souls to rest on their laurels when celebrating their 30th anniversary. After all, over those past three decades, the New Jersey punks have released ten full-length albums, toured all around the globe, and become one of the most respected bands of their scene. It would have been easy to sling together a selection of their best known work, write a new song or two, and hit the road for a nostalgia tour. But that's not who the Bouncing Souls are and it's not who they've ever been. Instead the four-piece—vocalist Greg Attonito, guitarist Pete Steinkopf and bassist Bryan Kienlen, who started the band in 1989, and were joined by drummer George Rebelo in 2013—decided to share Crucial Moments with the world. The new six-song EP captures who the band are now, and its accompanying book looks back on who they were and where they came from. "We all loved how it worked as a 30-year concept," says Attonito, "Because it encompasses everything— the personal moments that we have with ourselves and how we've grown in life, and also the bigger picture where we've had these special moments interacting with people who love our music." The band started collecting what Attonito terms "snapshots" from friends and fans about the role, however large or small, that the Souls had played in their lives. They soon realized that an actual narrative was emerging, one that could trace the impact they'd had over their three decades, cobbled together from all those "crucial moments."Attonito explains, "One of the conversations we had at the very beginning was to not just make it about us. We've talked about ourselves for 30 years – so let's let everyone else that cares enough tell our story. We wanted it to be primarily fan stories, as well as bands and friends – they know our story because our songs are telling our story. We collected them for over a year and it was such a treat, it's unreal how meaningful it is." Recorded by Will Yip in August of 2018, the six-track Crucial Moments EP captures the same youthful abandon that has defined the Bouncing Souls since their very early days. And this energy shows no signs of diminishing: the EP also showcases a highly experienced band that's still excited to grow. These songs are a wholehearted, fully-realized part of the Bouncing Souls canon, offering the winning familiarity of the band's most defining traits and bolstered by a career's worth of expertise. "Crucial Moments" and "Favorite Everything" are full of the romantic innocence that flows through the bands most wistful and nostalgic songs—that imperative sense that life is something to be experienced right now because if you don't you may never get another chance. That's also true of the chugging lament of "Home", a slow but defiant anthem that explodes both wistfully and hopefully at the end. Elsewhere, "1989" is a breakneck, boisterous quasi-hardcore song that, musically at least, could have been written that very year. While the lyrics are a bit more wistful than, say, "I Like Your Mom", from the band's 1994's debut, The Good, The Bad, And The Argyle, it's clear that despite 30 years of change, this is the same band at heart. "Really, we're still the same kids that wrote 'I Like Your Mom' and we'll still crack a mom joke just like we were 17," laughs Attonito. "But that's why I value it so much. I'm going to be 50 soon and I don't see many 50-year-old people around me with that instant bud spirit connection to their oldest friends. What really makes me so proud and appreciative is living all these years and seeing all that we've been through since high school – becoming business partners, going on tour 10 months a year, getting girlfriends and having relationships break up, and gett --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Interview with Taking Back Sunday
We had the opportunity to interview Taking Back Sunday! "If you can't believe that Taking Back Sunday have been around for 20 years, you're not alone, because they can't either. Although the pride of Long Island have had a handful of member changes over the years, the current lineup of the band – vocalist Adam Lazzara, guitarist John Nolan, drummer Mark O'Connell and bassist Shaun Cooper – have all been there since the beginning. From the band's landmark 2002 debut Tell All Your Friends to their most recent full-length, 2016's Tidal Wave, Taking Back Sunday have evolved from a key player in the early 2000s emo scene to a genre-defying rock band who have three gold albums without ever ceasing to push the limitations of their sound. This fact is evidenced on Twenty, a 21-song collection set for release on January 11, 2019 via Craft Recordings that spans all seven of their full-lengths and solidifies them as an act with a catalog that will undoubtedly outlive them. By now you know the basic history of the band, so we thought it'd be apt to look back at the fact that almost none of it happened... "When I joined Taking Back Sunday in 1999, it was the first real band that I had ever been a part of, but it never crossed my mind that I would be doing this twenty years later. When I came in to audition it was just [original vocalist] Antonio [Longo] and [founding TBS guitarist and former Movielife member] Eddie Reyes. Eddie had started enough bands that he was like, 'I know how to do this, I can just call one guy.' But it was a crazy thing. When it started out, there was a lot more likelihood that it would fizzle out in a few months than it would last a few years. I tried out, and basically after we jammed for a couple of hours Eddie was like, 'All right, you're in. You have to get some different equipment though... and I'll sell it to you.' I think he sold me a head and cabinet for $200 [that] had to be worth at least $600." -John Nolan "My entry into the band is pretty interesting. One day my brother said, 'Hey, my friend is looking for a drummer and he wanted to know if you wanted to try out.' But once I realized he was talking about Eddie, I had second thoughts. I remembered Eddie was the jerk who would yell at me and Shaun and all of our friends in front of Shaun's house when we would hang out there because he would be going to Movielife practice. So I said, 'No, I don't want to play in a band with that guy.' Then maybe two months later Shaun and I were hanging out [with] my mutual friend at a restaurant where Antonio worked and our friend said, 'Yo, my boy needs a drummer for his band if you want to try out.' The first song I heard was 'Go On' and I was like, 'Wow, this definitely has a lot of potential,' so I agreed. On my first tryout I remember walking in and seeing John, Antonio and then guess who's there? Eddie Reyes. I was like, 'Oh, what's up, man? How are you doing?' That was it." -Mark O'Connell "I didn't know anyone in Taking Back Sunday initially; I just knew who Eddie was because some of the bands from Long Island would play in North Carolina. I had just moved back to Greensboro from Wilmington and I didn't really have anything going on aside from delivering Chinese food, so I really wanted to be playing music. I ended up in a booth with Eddie and Antonio at the after show hangout spot, Waffle House, after an ill-fated Sons Of Abraham show and heard they needed a bass player for their new project. They said, 'Yeah, you should come up.' A couple of weeks later me and my friend Chris drove his 1988 Honda Accord up to New York, I tried out and then drove back. A few weeks later I got a call from Eddie [who] said, 'If you want to do this, we have some shows coming up.' So I flew to Long Island and never came back. Looking back now it's funny because I was like, 'I'm moving to New York, it's going to be so sick.' Then I moved to Long Island and it was kind of a bummer. It was just like North Carolina... only way mo --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/
