Interview with Colin Macleod
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Colin Macleod over Zoom video! Scottish singer/songwriter Colin Macleod's new album Hold Fast will be released June 18th, 2021 on UK label So Recordings (home to bands like Placebo and Band of Skulls). From the plangent, spacious Americana of the string laden opener "Queen of the Highland" to his heartfelt love letter to home "This Old Place," Hold Fast tells the tale of a man returning to the island where he was born after trying to make it in the world. Contrasting parts — Springsteen-style widescreen rock on "The Long Road" and "Sleep" to introspective acoustic folk on "Made of Stone" and "33" — contribute to a poignant whole. And although it may sound like a story culled from Macleod's own experience, being a singer songwriter who indeed left his tight-knit island community in search of glory, it is a work of fiction. It just happens to be fiction embedded in truth. Sheryl Crow, who Macleod has toured with in Europe, appears on two songs on the album "Old Soul" and "33." "Warning Signs" is a pop-rock belter about something we have all experienced: drunken misadventure. The album's latest single "The Long Road" is a melancholy piece about a hard life, not so much getting away from that life. We want to hear from you! Interview with Josh Olsen
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Josh Olsen over Zoom video! Josh Olsen was born in a small town in Texas, called Brenham. His mother was a singer and songwriter, and inspired him from a young age. His childhood was spent in recording studios and his mother's concerts. Being a shy kid, and a little different from most kids, he was very bullied in school. Josh wrote his first song on the guitar when he was 5 years old, and that was the start of many songs. His mother ended up giving up her career to raise Josh and his 4 siblings, so she started leading the music in their families' church. Josh got his start by singing along side his mother every Sunday. He then went on to lead the youth group band, which lead to touring around Texas doing music with his twin brother. After high school, Josh decided he wanted to chase his dreams of doing music full time. He and his brother wrote their first full length album together. Josh's dad studied sound engineering and had a great ear for music, so he took on the task of recording their first album. After the album was done, Josh and his brother decided to move out of their small town to look for more opportunities in the big city, so they moved the band to Austin. Shortly after, Josh and his brother Jeremiah did the show the X-Factor, making it to the top 40 acts in America. After the X-factor, Josh and his brother decided to start performing separately to allow themselves to be their own artist. Josh started performing 3 services every Sunday for a mega church in Austin with crowds around 2000 people. The church was very progressive, with a full band, lights, production, the whole nine yards. The opportunity gave Josh a lot of practice performing in front of large audiences, but Josh wanted more for his original music. In January, 2016 Josh made the move from Austin Texas to Los Angeles. Josh Olsen may be fairly new to the Los Angeles music scene, but he has hit the ground running since the move to Los Angeles. He was given the opportunity to co-wrote a song for NetFlix Fuller House Star, Juan Pablo Di Pace, for the release of his debut single "Broken". He later went on to write several original songs for Juan's Broadway Debut Show "A Night With Juan Pablo Di Pace". Josh recently released his debut EP, The Beginning Of The End. He's been working on this EP for over a year, with his first 2 single releases garnering over 250K streams: "Bad Things" + "Sex With A Stranger" which was produced by Grammy-nominated Bart Schoudel (Camila Cabello, Justin Bieber, Zara Larsson) We want to hear from you! Interview with TheHxliday
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing TheHxliday over Zoom video! Blessed with prodigious melodic talent, 19-year-old artist TheHxliday is ready to ascend to stardom in 2021. Bringing to life a highlight track from his Batbxy EP, TheHxliday shares "NxBody," his latest music video. A propulsive, R&B-influenced banger produced by Shop w/ Trap, VDIDIT & Mike Gonsolin, "NxBody" shows off the Motown Records signee's skill with melodic phrasing as he describes a tumultuous relationship he just can't pull himself away from: "And I can't trust nobody, I can't trust nobody/I wish I had love again, I wish I had somebody/I know there ain't no recovering, no, we can't restart it/But I don't want nobody else, so baby, let's restart it." Directed by Anthony Wilson, the artfully lo-fi video for "NxBody" translates TheHxliday's pain and uncertainty into literal terms, alternates clips of the young singer-songwriter alone in the woods with a gaping wound in his heart with red-hued glimpses of a happier time. True to his name, TheHxliday kicked off 2021 with a celebration, dropping the Batbxy EP on New Year's Day. The 19-year-old Baltimore artist demonstrates an uncanny knack for infectious, otherworldly melodies across the release's six tracks, swooning and singing with an uplifting energy that belies the pain expressed in the lyrics. Early singles like the moody "Thank U" and the carefree "Laugh A Little"–whose cinematic video dropped on Christmas Day–show off the young songwriter's knack for making both struggles and triumphs feel ecstatic. Batbxy is just the latest in an impressive productive streak for TheHxliday. Since he started posting to SoundCloud in his adolescence, he's made upwards of 1,000 songs – the sort of grind that produces diamonds like his emotional 2018 breakout "Enemy," which caught the attention of tastemaking multimedia crew Lyrical Lemonade. Since then, he's honed his writing on songs like "Messages," "Save Me," which received praise by the likes of COMPLEX and FLAUNT and "Mistakes," each of which garnered millions of streams in the short time since their release. Batbxy follows in the tradition of these introspective bangers, but it also feels like the joyful start of a new chapter in TheHxliday's career. Stay tuned for much more from TheHxliday in the coming weeks and months. We want to hear from you! Interview with Hotel Mira
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Hotel Mira over Zoom video! Hotel Mira, born from mastermind Charlie Kerr, have taken the sound out of the garage and into a considerably lusher landscape, as heard on Hotel Mira's debut LP "Perfectionism." Working with Grammy-award winning producer Eric Ratz (Billy Talent, Arkells), Kerr directed his creative energy at writing sharper hooks and more memorable melodies. The results – as heard on charged-up numbers like "The Eyes On You" and "This Could Be It For Me" – are songs that boast anthemic, soaring choruses while sacrificing none of their sheer rock 'n' roll energy. The sound showcased on "Perfectionism" is wrapped up in a polished, pungent, yet untethered and cracked aesthetic. There's no such thing as perfect, nor should there be, and this album communicates exactly that, lyrically and sonically. Kerr and company have created an 11-track masterpiece that tempts the listener through stories of relationships, growth and the struggle to live in one's own mind. The infectious project is impeccably crafted, making Hotel Mira well worth checking into. Untethered, impossibly perfect. We want to hear from you! Interview with Smallpools
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Smallpools over Zoom video! Indie-Rockers Smallpools are back with a brand new single "simulation" today. The new track from the band's upcoming sophomore LP due early 2021, displays a futuristic, groovy beat while questioning if the chaotic reality we live in is truly our own. "When the word becomes such a circus, I can't help but wonder if there's somebody logged in just pulling our strings for their own entertainment", says Sean Scanlon. Smallpools erupted onto the scene with their head turning opening statement, "Dreaming" (now RIAA Certified Gold). The song surged to the top of the Hype Machine chart; quickly earning the band support from alternative radio stations across the country, multiple late night television appearances and a home on the road as the opening act for Twenty One Pilots, Walk the Moon, Grouplove and Two Door Cinema Club on their national tours. Smallpools then released their acclaimed, debut album LOVETAP! and spent the majority of the next two years selling out venues nationwide in support of its release. In addition to their new single, Smallpools recently announced their signing to ONErpm. "With the ever-changing landscape of the way music is shared and consumed, we're thrilled to be partnering with such an innovative company to release our long overdue second full length album," shares the band on the new signing. Interview with Lil Zay Osama
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Lil Zay Osama over Zoom video! Lil Zay Osama is starting the year off strong as he announces his forthcoming project Trench Baby, set for release on February 19th, with a new song and video titled "61st to 64th" on Warner Records. With Chicago on his back, Zay has been building momentum over the past several months, dropping new heat, including "Loyalty," "Rumors" and "Ride For Me" feat. Jackyboy, and amassing millions of streams. The new "61st to 64th" track sheds light on the harsh nature of the specific Chicago streets where Zay made his name. Vividly describing it as if you were riding in the passenger seat as Zay drives through the hood, he raps, "61st to 64th, ain't nobody on that porch / Everybody got a 30, everybody trying to score." Trench Baby finds Zay returning to and refining the pain music that's made him one of the most affecting storytellers in rap. The struggle that he so magnificently captured in his music and visuals when he first arrived is what he set out to encapsulate on the forthcoming project. Zay waxes poetic on grief, trauma and romantic heartbreak as much as he articulates the joy of survival. His mindset is to give fans "the real me again, so they feel it in their heart," as he puts it. Stay tuned. ABOUT LIL ZAY OSAMA: Lil Zay Osama makes "pain music." That's what the South Side native calls his combination of raw, gripping lyrics and a passionate delivery. One of Chicago's most captivating young voices, the 23- year-old pens heart-wrenching street narratives riddled with eulogies for tragically lost family and friends. Throughout 2020, Zay has touched fans with singles like "Loyalty," which encapsulates the emotional impact of his heaviest songs. In one half-sung couplet, he distills the callousness of Chicago street life. One of six children born to a single mother, Zay employed every hustle available to him growing up—selling newspapers, playing bucket drums, illicit grinds—to provide for himself and his family. But though Zay was in the street early, he was in the studio well before. By the time he was a teen, he was a budding star in the early 2010s Chicago drill scene alongside compatriots like Chief Keef. Zay dropped his celebrated and celebratory Hood Bible (2019) while glowing from signing to Warner Records, but his forthcoming project Trench Baby takes a different tack. He captures grief, trauma, and romantic heartbreak as much as he articulates the joy of survival. We want to hear from you! Interview with The Bright Siders
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing The Bright Siders over Zoom audio! The Bright Siders is a unique musical collaboration between Nashville-based Americana songwriter Kristin Andreassen and Brooklyn-based child psychiatrist Kari Groff, MD. Together, they create music with the purpose of helping children connect to their emotions. Ten years in the making, their carefully crafted, star-studded debut album A Mind of Your Own arrives just when the world needs it most, and as the importance of mental health resurfaces. Releasing on January 21, 2021 via Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the album invites listeners to think deeply about empathy and self-compassion as they navigate the beauty and complexity of their emotional lives. Together with an inclusive cast of inspiring vocalists – including Ed Helms, The War & Treaty, Gaby Moreno, Punch Brothers, Joey Ryan (The Milk Carton Kids), Oh Pep!, Kaia Kater, and more – Andreassen, Dr. Groff and their co-producer, Chris Eldridge, offer a profoundly empowering collection of songs and skits for elementary age children and the grownups who love them. Kari Groff, MD is an accomplished physician running a child psychiatry practice in Brooklyn, New York. Her side passion has always been as a fiddler and songwriter. Through her clinical work as a child psychiatrist, Dr. Groff has seen first-hand how powerful music can be in helping children to process emotions. As a young doctor, she started writing her own material based on the issues brought to her by her patients, weaving psychiatric advice within her catchy lyrics. Kristin Andreassen has toured world stages as a singer, clogger, square dance caller and educator, first with the Maryland-based Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, and then with oldtime stringband Uncle Earl (Abigail Washburn, Rayna Gellert, KC Groves) and "folk noir" trio Sometymes Why (Ruth Ungar, Aoife O'Donovan). As a songwriter, Andreassen's achievements include the kids' radio hit "Crayola Doesn't Make a Color for Your Eyes". It was a chance meeting between Andreassen and Dr. Groff that launched The Bright Siders as a shared musical endeavor. The songs and skits, along with Dr. Groff's "Try this at home…" suggestions contained in the liner notes, are all intended to set the stage for conversations with children about common emotional themes and experiences they're likely to have while growing up. "More than anything, we encourage parents, educators, and caregivers to listen to this music with their children. Where does the real magic of this album happen? It's in actively listening to the music with children and then talking about what they experience in response to the music," says Dr. Groff. "Children should understand that their feelings are valid and important to the adults around them," she continues. "And parents can help children live rich and meaningful lives by helping them accept and understand their emotional experiences with compassion – even if they, as parents, cannot directly fix a problem that is making them anxious or sad." With playful lyrics and contagious melodies, this music cuts through the monofocus of our pandemic-centered times, offering a practical guide to raising emotionally intelligent children who, one day soon, will take those skills with them as they experience the beauty in growing up and becoming themselves.
