104. Des Linden, 2018 Boston Marathon Champion & 2x Olympian
The should-be day for the 2020 Boston Marathon, the perfect time to release my conversation with pro runner, two-time Olympian, and 2018 Boston champ, Des Linden. These days, she’s without a doubt leading the charge in American women’s distance running, and in episode 104 we talk about how she got there. Growing up in San Diego and then running at Arizona State, she knew from a young age that this sport was her sport. Today, she walks me through so many of her major career milestones, the good — including that famous Boston win on the worst weather day ever — and the bad — the London Olympics, a tough second-place finish, and an entire month without lacing up her sneakers in the summer 2017 because it just wasn’t feeling right. Highlights: Her best advice for beginners, the biggest regret she has about this year’s Olympic marathon trials in Atlanta, and what’s next on her radar (!). Spoiler alert: This whiskey lover may need a new pair of Brooks track spikes. SOCIAL @des_linden @hurdlepodcast @emilyabbate OFFERS Beet Elite | My new muscular endurance secret sauce. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: What Are You Grateful For?
Welcome to 5-Minute Fridays, a new segment from Hurdle where I share a quick story, offer you a prompt that makes you think, and share a few of my top highlights of the week — whether that’s a podcast, an app, a streaming workout, a quote — you get the idea. PLEASE, let me know what you think. Do you like this? What do you want to hear about? This week: Are you struggling with how things were “supposed” to be? Hey, I feel you. Two months ago, coronavirus wasn't here. I was celebrating Valentine's Day with a glass of wine with my best friend at my favorite restaurant, surrounded by dozens of people. And now? We're wearing masks the moment we walk outside of our homes and can't go within 6 feet of another person. I’m here to tell you that it’s OK to feel let down, sharing a story about something tough I'm going through personally. The catch: Make sure you do this one critical thing, and keep looking forward. PROMPT: What are you grateful for right this very moment? 103. Gabrielle Bernstein, Bestselling Author & Speaker
On an October morning in 2005, Gabby Bernstein was sitting on her apartment floor still under the influence from the night before when it hit her like a ton of bricks: She had to make a change. Fast forward almost 15 years later, the then nightlife publicist is now a new mom, New York Times bestselling author, and renowned public speaker, helping people everywhere to walk their own spiritual path. I’m so excited to bring you this long-awaited conversation, which dives into Gabby’s journey of finding herself and empowering others. We chat about her newest book Super Attractor: Methods for Manifesting a Life beyond Your Wildest Dreams, and she opens up about a more recent #hurdlemoment that had her struggling with postpartum depression and anxiety. She also talks to me about the concept of sleep hygiene, and shares her two best tips for anyone struggling with addiction. #HURDLEMOMENT: Strategies for Dealing With Stress
There is no such thing as "normal" right now. Some days may feel easy breezy and others feel like you're about to summit Everest. You are NOT alone. Today, I'm chatting up the strategies I've been using to counteract stress and overwhelm, and how to stay positive when — TBH — there's a lot of negativity lingering around at the moment. I also give feedback on my social media cleanse from the weekend, which may have been the best thing I've done so far in 2020. 102. Joe Yoon, Massage Therapist @JoeTherapy
This week I am chatting with Joe Yoon, better known to his 1.3 million Instagram followers @JoeTherapy. He’s a certified personal trainer and licensed massage therapist, and his client roster includes everyone from Olympic gold medalists and NFL Pro Bowl players to championship bodybuilders. In episode 102, we chat about how getting kicked out of his major in college inspired him to become a fitness professional. We also touch on exactly how he managed to turn that #hurdlemoment into motivation for a major career shift. He talks to me about his newest chapter as an author (check out Better Stretching on Amazon), and the important strategies he uses to combat impostor syndrome and negativity. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: How Do You Define Yourself?
I went on a quick run yesterday morning. On that run, I marinated on how I would feel if tomorrow I was told I couldn’t go out anymore. If tomorrow, I found out I had to stop being a “runner,” at least for a bit. It got me thinking, how are we evolving during this time? What am I, aside from the labels that are in my Instagram bio? Who is it that I WANT to be? Prompt: How do you define yourself? This is bigger than your occupation or your hobbies. Talk to me about your values and your character. #HURDLEMOMENT: Tips for Running Outside (Safely)
More than ever, people are taking to the streets and trails to try to get in some exercise. As of now, the experts say that if you’re practicing social distancing and exercising SOLO — it’s OK to run outside. In today’s #hurdlemoment, I talk about my why for continuing to run outdoors, and I address the concerns that Hurdlers are sending me via DM and email. I also offer up best-practice tips for newer runners, including how far you should (or shouldn’t) be going, what sneakers to wear, and how to connect with other runners — even though you’re doing the act physically alone. I also offer up my secret to staying motivated when the run feels blah, and finish things off by answering a few listener questions. 101. Natalie Kuhn: Vice President of Programming & Founding Teacher at The Class
Natalie Kuhn has helped me a lot over the past few weeks, which have been spent mostly alone in my small New York City apartment. Not over the phone or even via text, but rather by taking her class — The Class. As the Vice President of Programming and a founding teacher at Taryn Toomey’s The Class, a “spiritual fitness” experience (Nat’s words, not mine), she does this for a lot of people all around the globe. For episode 101, I’m getting to know her better, and we’re getting deep. Natalie gets super vulnerable about her past, opening up about the unexpected death of her mother and a difficult divorce. She talks about going to therapy and speaking with an intimacy coach. (I was this many years old when I learned that intimacy coaches are a thing.) We also chat about how to handle this new “normal” and manage difficult emotions. This conversation made me feel — hard. I really hope you appreciate it, too.
