#HURDLEMOMENT: How to Be More Disciplined
Discipline: It’s not always easy, but it can be a game-changer. Today, I’m bringing in Les Alfred, host of Balanced Black Girl podcast and certified yoga teacher, to chat all about it. (Spoiler: Her voice is perhaps the most calming thing I’ve listened to in months next to my 3-minute Headspace meditations.) For today’s #hurdlemoment, we’ll talk about how to have it, when to let go, and tools to harness when it feels like your discipline is waning. We also talk about where we can both be more disciplined in our own lives, and where discipline has made a major difference. For me? That’s within my mornings. 197. Ali Krieger, Pro Soccer Player
Season NINE, what's good? To kick things off (pun intended) for episode 197, I'm bringing in Ali Krieger, a pro soccer player and two-time Women's World Cup winner with the USWNT. We talk about her outstanding soccer career spanning 16 years, including the tough hurdles along the way involving injury and essentially being fired from the USWNT for about two years. She also shares the joy she felt returning to the team in 2019, and the elation that came with getting her 100th cap, which in soccer lingo is how many international matches a player has partaken in. We also talk about her being a huge advocate for the LGBTQ community, something she’s super passionate about alongside her now wife and teammate Ashlyn Harris. She shares what it was like coming out to their teammates and coaches, a little bit about her hesitancy at first, and her best advice for anyone who may be feeling some kind of way about coming out, too. I've been thinking about re-recording this with some fresh perspective for some time. And, thanks to a season break, here we are with some extra time to do just that. On this special bonus episode, I'm sparing no details — talking about my journey to self love through weight loss, therapy, and learning to love running. Plus: How I got to starting this podcast and the important lessons I've learned along the way. 196. Keira D'Amato, Pro Runner & American Record Holder In the Marathon
Welcome this new record holder (also, my new BFF) to the show! For episode 196, Keira's talking about how she got here: From post-college running to the injury that had her taking a step back. She talks about having children, getting married, and diving head-first into her career as a realtor only to come back to running as a "hobby," — knowing that it was a big risk that could go well or set her up for disappointment. It wasn't long until she started taking her hobby to new heights, setting fresh goals, and aiming to go after Deena Kastor's American record — set in 2006 back in London. We cover it all: From what it felt like in Houston, how she feels about doing things "differently" than other pros, her favorite Oreo flavors, and what's next. #HURDLEMOMENT: How To Make Yourself a Morning Person
Mornings are pretty polarizing, right? Either you love them and fully embrace the phrase “the early bird gets the worm,” or you’re more of a snooze button enthusiast. If you’re the latter, you may want to reconsider your daily kickoff, and here’s why: Research shows that morning people are more proactive, happier, and more consistent with their workout routines. In today’s episode, I’m answering the most popular question I see in my DMs: How do I become a morning person, too? Good news! I'm giving you the insights on my early days, and offering seven tips you need to become a morning person, too. You're going to need a fresh notebook and some willpower (a sweat-friendly playlist won’t hurt, either). 195. Chrissy King, Writer, Fitness Coach & Creator of The Body Liberation Project
Today I am chatting with Chrissy King. She’s a writer, speaker, and educator, with a passion for creating a diverse and inclusive wellness industry. She is also the creator of The Body Liberation Project, through which she empowers individuals to stop shrinking, start taking up space, and use their energy to create their specific magic in the world. What I thought was special about Chrissy is that we both started getting into fitness with a desire to lose weight, but found so much more within this world beyond the physical. For episode 195, she talks to me about how that shift happened — finding love in power lifting, competing on a national level, and steering her inner dialogue toward body positivity and what that looks like for her in practice. She talks openly about her breaking point, a #hurdlemoment that affirmed there’s so much more to life than being small. She also talks to me about the diversity and inclusion work that she’s been doing in the wellness industry and how a business coach really helped her find her voice and home in on growing her brand. My favorite thing about the New York-based entrepreneur? Her passion to empower others from all backgrounds to be celebrated and feel seen.
